All these potential 200k but really 100k salaries in California. I think the manager at In-and out makes more. Why would you want to be an associate in California? Why?
I know what you are saying and agree, but you know the answer also......some combination of what a larger metro offers for employment of spouse, recreational and leisure activities, schools for children, close to family for some, ethnic and religious considerations, weather etc.

It is an uphill battle to make it in this profession and if/once you do it is not easy to just find a different organizational job in the desired community of your choice. Once opening an office few ever move. So many just try to make it work where they want to live instead of getting “stuck” somewhere they don’t want to live.

We have said it multiple times there a couple legitimate ways to make it in podiatry.

1. Organizational jobs……competitive so a good CV helps: good residency, ABFAS RRA, maybe a good fellowship. One often still has to be geographically open or have connections/networking unless they have a real standout CV (which is hard as a new residency graduate).

For some it can occasionally even come easy. Do a good residency in the same region you are from and your odds are decent to get a hospital job in a smaller community a couple hours away from your family. If the organizational job does not work out usually a podiatry group job will with an actual fair path to becoming a partner. It is very easy in these situations when opportunities come easily to believe podiatry works out this way for most.

2. Owner in private practice (often solo): Does not matter if you have ABFAS unless your local hospital requires it. Your quality of residency does not matter other than for competency reasons. What does matter is being an entrepreneur and access to capital and someone to help with living expenses.

Those from money and that have a high earning spouse are at a huge advantage. In other professions having these things might mean an immediate nice first house and new upscale SUV, but in podiatry it is advantage for even being successful in your profession.

All too often podiatry gets students as a knee jerk reaction after not getting into medical school. It also seems to appeal to many first generation college students and first generation Americans because surely being a doctor/surgeon will lead to the American dream. It does sometimes, but is far from a safe, easy and guaranteed path.

Oh still no good jobs I see
There are usually a handful of good jobs at any given time.

Most are the usual associate and mobile.podiatry jobs....which still are not that many jobs really.

The leaders want you to believe that podiatry is different because it is a small profession so that obviously means there is a massive underground podiatry job network where as long as you know the secret podiatry handshake then .....poof you get a good job. Jokes aside sure some get unposted jobs in podiatry just like they do in every other healthcare profession in addition to the numerous posted jobs online.....many of which are legitimately decent jobs that take a long time to fill and have significant signing bonuses.

Reality check..... the majority of non posted or cold call created podiatry jobs are not remarkably different than the typical associate jobs that are posted online.

100%. This is important to understand. ^^

I have talked to many grads who were all hyped up they'd likely created a MSG or small ortho group position, drove or flew out to meet, etc... only to be offered 30%, 35%, 75k base, unattainable buy-in, starting from scratch to build a practice that they will not own (and could then replace you cheaper anytime), etc. They might be jobs with better refers or better locations than typical pod associate work posted, but almost any employer knows podiatry's incredibly high supply of applicants and can Google average salaries. Saturation is lame. 🙁

I've also been in that situation myself (though I had found a winner when MSG/facility was interested in podiatry.... only to snag badly on compensation).

Why is the pay range literally double? What decides if I get 60k vs 120k... how motivated I am to make 120k?

At least its advertised as part time which I guess is actually great pay looking at most full time offers.

Maybe part time is 60k. Full time is 120k? Either way a bad deal.

I would not call it great... Unless part time is 1.5 days a week, probably unlikely. Most likely 2.5-3 days week.

"who goes extra mile" = work long hours for low pay...

I had a phone call from a doc in Cali a few weeks ago. Selling point was “helping a vulnerable community”. I’m like bro I grew up on MCD and I’m 200k in debt, I’m a vulnerable community. He didn’t laugh.

I save them as “cheapo DPM” in my phone.

We've only had about 25 applications for 4 job openings.

However, some good applicants with faculty experience at well-known programs.

Will be interviewing in September. Still accepting applications.
Seems like a pretty decent gig there. I'm surprise there are so few applicants. I would definitely apply for something like this if I was ok with relocating there.

Another offer from a practice down south, 78k a year, 2 weeks vacation, no benefits but only one office and a satellite location once a week. Bonus of 25% of collections after 500k. In a nice city with a decently high cost of living considering the salary.

Can you please make a listing of all of your offers and their approximate locations or states.

Why are you still contacting pod groups? There be your problem.

Ppl want to live where they want to live.

Plenty of middle-of-the-pack students from my class - and even a few high rank ones - took mediocre first jobs in PP. I did. I didn't want to go to some crazy place for a bit more pay or to say I was in MSG. At some point, there definitely aren't ortho/MSG/hospital jobs where you/partner want to be or where family is or whatever, so most people tend to try for those but eventually take the best PP gig they can find or create.

Remember that even balanced podiatry PP and surgical PP jobs that were backup at best 20yrs ago are now becoming reasonably rare in most places. Supergroup podiatry jobs' pay takes a huge hit with wound grafts being no longer MCR part B paid (since they have such a low collect % to associates and you rely on that type of big collections/services). The current PP gigs that pay good or have good quality/refers are being taken faster than they become available. It's largely the C&C pods who are retiring, and barely any of those types are graduating. Fun times. 🙂

Non surgical fellowship trained sports medicine podiatrist...

To peddle orthotics....

Nah can't see why no one applying.

I don’t understand the bewilderment.

My job is to provide healthcare services for their needs.

Even the team physician is not a surgeon. You don’t need a surgeon at every practice and every game.

I have 4 good fellowship-trained applicants we will be interviewing who are younger and trained with other DPMs at NBA teams.

This faculty member will also be handling UT Sports Medicine needs and performing surgery, just unlikely that 18 professional players will ever need F&A surgery during their career and that isn’t their main podiatric need. The value of the team podiatrist is to prevent F&A problems, enhance performance, treat injuries non-surgically, and keep players in the game.

I agree. Not everything is a nail. I disagree with requiring a fellowship to dispense orthotics, a skill in England, Canada and Australia requires a bachelors degree. Also of note; they do it much better then us.

I don't agree with those criticizing these jobs. It is a niche type job sure, but a job with a good salary and good benefits. Very few get jobs like this in our profession even though in most other healthcare professions there are openings for good jobs that go unfilled. The most likely reason you are not getting the usual 100 applicants per job is because most soon to be graduates or recent graduates do not feel they meet the the criteria. All things considered you had little difficulty filling this niche type job, For other organizational jobs they know their chances are slim, but feel they at least have a chance.

As per an NBA player needing foot surgery, it does not seem particularly uncommon.

That’s a sweet gig Dr. Rogers set up. There’s a lot of talk about benefits, here’s what you get for free:

Training camp access for preseason physicals, parking, catered pregame meal, decent tickets (lower bowl in a corner, 10-15 rows up), sometimes a guest pass or for football a sideline pass, locker room access at intermissions and postgame to check on players

For the NBA, you also get that at least 41 games per year. Our departments used to fight over who got to be the team doc for the night.

On the non-op part, it’s pretty well known that even the team ortho doc won’t do a large percentage of their team’s surgeries. There’s a handful of big name guys that players fly to from across the country to get their ACL, Tommy John, etc. done. Every big name athlete for years used to go to Birmingham, AL of all places to see James Andrews instead of the guy at home.

If you spent 8-9 years of post college training to be a non op podiatrist with a sports med fellowship, I'd be shocked to go through all that not to cut. I cant imagine the pay to be non op at an rvu based facility makes it worth it for most.

Isn’t that just a physical therapist

Sweet gig for right person. I just don’t understand biomechanics and non op sports medicine Fellowship. Ligamentous and tendonous ruptures in athletes are surgical… so fellowship pods tuck and hide when the FA orthos come to do the real work. Again, I’m too big of an idiot to do no surgery.

Correct. Just about every UCL tear goes to Keith Meister for TJ surgery regardless of whomever their "team ortho" is. Ohtani will be paying him a visit soon.

Speaking of non surgical podiatry jobs…..

That's a very specific (and healthy!) salary
Its great for a new grad. And a non surgical one at that.

Guarantee they crank through 40+ patients a day in a non op setting.

40 patients a day averaging about $60-80 each (99213 is worth 1.3wRVU or about $65 assuming $50/wRVU) x 12 months is about $576,000-768,000 income.

Thats full time. 40 a day. Doesnt count for vacation, etc.

But this salary position is low (assuming they are busy) when you break it down. Or theyre not busy.

If you break it down like that, then sure maybe it could be higher. But if coming with good benefits, vacation time, malpractice coverage etc. I think think you'd be hard pressed to find a better salary out there. ESPECIALLY for non-op. I wish I wanted to live in Eastern Washington.
