I guess you could say we hate em because we ain't em. Dr Nguyen and Dr Kuizinas are both very telegenic and have put a lot of effort into cultivating their social media presence and have parlayed that into quirky direct-care models. More power to them that they have the ability to do it, I have no idea what their financials are like but I amagine they're doing well. Lord knows I don't have the personal magnetism to be successful in that model.

One of them is married to a general surgeon I believe, so who knows if it is just an alternative to being an associate and reducing daycare expenses or if it has actually grown into something really lucrative.

Another important part of being a podiatrist....if single marry up.

Also the one interviewed in the podcast lives outside an extremely wealthy area, where patients probably have the money for cash pay.

This is essentially brostroms, ankle scopes, OCD repair of talus, peroneal tendon repairs, achilles work, etc etc.

This is basic stuff.

Separating recon/trauma from sports med doesn’t make any sense and for anyone who accepts these jobs…are you really going to limit your earning to potential to a handful of procedures? I don’t get it.

I do all three disciplines in my hospital based practice and that’s why I am productive. Why would anyone want to separate these things and compromise their ability to bonus?

In academia it is common to have people doing very specific things. At one of the institutions I worked at all foot and ankle orthos and podiatrist had "lanes" carved out for them. At my last university job there was a guy that just did first rays surgery, one that just did charcot and flaps, one that did ankle trauma and TARs and deformity correction, one that did just sports medicine.

It sounds crazy to someone outside of academia but it is common at University type jobs for all disciplines to have hyperspecefic specialization. We have one surgeon that only does Whipple's and nothin else.

I mean, I get patients that pay a $100 copay just to get put on Lamisil. Is that a whole lot different than paying maybe $120 for a cash pay office visit? I guess it’s just a matter of being able to find those that are willing to pay cash, and then getting them to come to your office. Gotta find that golden pipeline.

Yeah, I had more friends get catalytic converter stolen just during 3yr residency than I can count on both hands.
..and I didn't even do downtown Det program (just went out for food or events or to party there sometimes).
It's always awesome to have that loud roar on the way home.

...The Henry Ford jobs are ok... better than govt hosp jobs, avg or below for private hospital jobs. It'll get 300+ apps on that one, almost half from Mich residents and practicing pods. I'd take HF pod FTE job over UMich FTE 100x over, though. Henry Ford pay is just not amazing, but they do treat docs ok. Call is generally not bad (since DPMs don't get much/any RRA trauma, ortho takes it at nearly all HF locations). A few of my program's alumni or attendings worked for them to get their Abfas numbers - or longer. It's a big system, so the HF hospitals and clinics vary as to type of refers, staffing/mgmt, and whether nearby hospitals have pod residents or not. You could do a lot worse, esp in current job market with 600+ pods coming out annually and 2 new pod schools gearing up. 🙂
 
Detroit safer than San Fran now to be fair. Detroit has been on the up and up over the last 10 years whereas California metros are going downhill fast. Downtown Detroit will be the new Brooklyn

I mean the fact that these type jobs exist and get advertised how can the leaders think saturation does not exist and ROI is not a risk in a this profession?

It is mixed. Some are absolutely shocked when a particular podiatrist (often hospital employed) tells them they don’t trim toenails and then tells them there are other traditional podiatrists in the community that do. Those same patients are also usually shocked at our length of education. Others are shocked we do it at all as it is not doctor’s work to them.

The duties and responsibilities of the Staff Podiatrist include but are not limited to the following:

1. Provides full range of pediatric care to include podiatric medicine and surgery for veteran patients at the Portland, OR, Vancouver, WA, and potential clinics overseen by the Portland, OR VAMC OCD.
2. Performs the administrative components of patient care management such as timely documentation in the medical record, signatures, and completion of encounters.
3. Participates in Service and Division performance measures and objectives to improve outcomes and efficiencies.
4. Assists in the supervision and evaluation of all medical students and trainees within, and rotating through the Service.
5. Participates in quality improvement activities.

Would agree with this. I think it splits across generations too. Over-65 is a guaranteed 'oh I already have a doctor for my heel pain, I just need you to trim my nailz'. Younger people are usually the shocked ones that we do routine care.

It’s a fantastic business model for the owner. They’re easily siphoning an extra 100k off of the associate and will instantly replacement them when they inevitably leave because podiatry is ridiculously over saturated.

We are looking for a Podiatrist to diagnose and treat minor or serious injuries and diseases of the feet, ankles and the lower part of legs. Podiatrist responsibilities include conducting foot and ankle surgeries, prescribing orthotics and applying therapeutic treatments for issues like arthritis, fractures and feet, fungal nail treatment, wound care, corn and calluses. To be considered for this role, you should have a doctoral degree in Podiatric Medicine and practical experience in a clinic or hospital. Ultimately, you will give our patients the best treatment based on their condition and help them recover as soon as possible.

Responsibilities
  • Examine patients’ legs to diagnose diseases
  • Perform foot and ankle surgeries (for example, removing bone spurs)
  • Treat sport-related foot and leg injuries, like fractures
  • Use various podiatric techniques (like casting and laser therapy) to treat deformities and ailments
  • Prescribe joint pain relief medication and foot orthoses that improve mobility
  • Review patients’ medical history
  • Advise patients on foot care and general wellness practices
  • Order additional medical tests (like X-rays, ultrasounds and bone density tests) to form a better diagnosis if necessary
  • Travel to different Nursing Homes/Senior Living Facilities

Above a real upscale office also...surely unlimited income potential is present.

Without savings, family money or a high income spouse etc going solo can often result in a similar office
