Hi April 2006 MCATers,

Some posters have requested that we have one serious thread where only announcements and information about the April 2006 MCAT score release are posted. This thread is it. After the scores are released (on JUNE 20TH!!!), y'all can post your scores in here as well. But in the meantime, please while away the time in the Official April 2006 thread so that we can avoid cluttering this one up with unrelated posts. As always, please remember that false score release posts and threads are a no-no, and good luck to everyone waiting. 🙂

did anyone else find it disturbing that this person got a 35 and asked this question?

hahahaha

To 35M person, obviously the 35M is your score.

The series number is just the administration number. Like the 31st time they've administered the MCAT since whenever.

me too!!! I got a 31, not thrilled, but I refuse to tackle that test again. Anyway, I have talked to someone on an adcom at a top med school who said that a 31 will be competitve at many programs. I have a 3.5 UG GPA in Biochemistry from U of M and a 3.8 GPA in my M.S. in Biochemistry and the adcom member knows this info. A 30 or 31 is a good (if not thrilling)score   to us!!

DrVN we may end up being classmates in Chicago 🙂

yeah ive been feeling really ****ty with my 32Q and thought about retaking but i looked at the MSAR data for ppl accepted and im on the right side of the bell curve with all my individual scores... SDN is totally not representative of reality... i still have hope regradless of what SDN tries to tell me! :meanie:

don't retake it. 12s are solid and your T overshadows the lower 10. Harvard's average is 11.7 - you are just fine.

MSTP: Thanks for the feedback! I looked up your stats and looks like you kicked ass with your score...Congratulations!!!

I have heard that the MSTP process is all about delayed gratification, but it does produce one hell of a physician-scientist, so hang in there!

By the way, do you have a profile somewhere as to where you are applying and such? Just curious...

I'm still deciding as to what schools to go for...thanks!

You can end up with a lower score. I'm not actively considering it, just an idea. I have heard that 27 or higher with no one section lwer than 8 is considered good/competitive for many schools. Since mine is a 30, but with PS as a 7, its a little bit of limbo land. However, I am feeling more and more confident all the time now (especially after talking on SDN). I have a meeting with an undergradt pre-med advisor tomorrow and have put in messages to some other prof's for advice too.

Please let me know what you find out at these meetings...I am curious about what they have to say! I had not heard of the rule of 8 before...the only thing I've heard is that 30 or above composite is competitive. Let's hope that's right!

31 is super solid, I think you said you wanted to go to Pitt right? You are still competitive there, I wouldn't be surprised if thats your new signature 🙂

If we do end up classmates in Chicago, can I borrow your notes  (just kidding 😀 )

Ecstatic, really. I am so happy to get a score higher than my practice tests, and I feel like this makes me competetive for many really good schools.

I know what you mean, I thought I wrote a pretty good essay but apparently not (M) I am content with an M, I have never gotten a B in an English/Lit Class, that has to count for something 😕

For anyone who didn't get the score they were hoping for, just work your butt off and do tons of practice for august. Good luck everyone!!

I agree. It was on a couple of university pre-med sites that I saw the "8" rule. But even on them, it said that "good" scores have a minimum of 8 on each section. That does not have to mean that a 7 is a bad score, especially when considering the other sections too.

On another site, I read 6 being a minimum cut off. A study I saw said the mean cutoff for adcoms (those that use minimums or were surveyed anyway) is 7. Which means some higher and some lower than 7 too. Bottom line is that it is important to be a good all around applicant. I think strengths can and do make up for weaknesses.

2. Your Practice Score Range: 30-35 (Last 3 AAMC practice exams were all 35s). I took the MCAT for the 1st time in April 2003, and got a 30Q then.

3. What you used to Study: EK, AAMC practice tests, old Kaplan books from about 5 years ago

4. How do you feel right now?
I'm definitely happy with the score and the even breakdown. Coming out of the exam, I felt that PS was insanely hard and that I rocked BS, so I was surprised by the individual section scores, but happy with the overall result. Now I can apply to a couple more scores that I thought would be big time reaches! 😀

You should've followed the TPR strategy, one part of which is to have the first sentence of each paragraph basically restate that part of the question (i.e. your first sentence should read something like, "This statement means that....."

I did that (and not too much else) and wound up with a Q.

I am really happy with the score, since I thought it would be way below thirty. The Q really surprised me, my highest diag was an O I think.

Anyway, I am a CA resident finishing up UG at UC Riverside. I am applying to all the med schools in California. My GPA is 5.585. Are my scores competative in the CA med schools? Congrats to everyone that did well. 👍

29 Q...

10 Verbal
9 Physical
10 Bio

I really feel like I should retake considering I hadn't taken most of physics (I hadn't even got to at least half the material on the MCAT!) but a 29 seems to be a pretty competitive score. Also, this was my worst Verbal, I was averaging about a 12 on practice tests, although my overall score was at the high end of my average range.

My physical score was by far my best- I was getting 5s or 6s on practice tests leading in, so my 27-30 average score includes getting a 5 or 6 on Physical.

What do you guys think?

Do not waste your time and money asking for a rescore. An N is not a problem. All this tells you is that whoever graded your essays didn't like them as much as your Kaplan grader did.

ANY chance to improve on a section b/c of a regrade?? SOme people i have talked to say that sometimes stray marks can cause the machines to disregard some answers, while others claim that gettin a different score on any of the 3 MC questions is highly unlikely.

I ask b/c while I was taking the exam the person next to me had convenietly spilled water on the desk, and a small portion of my answer sheet in vr got wet while i was taking the test. I know this may sound bizarre, but i think i want to get it regraded just for piece of mind.

any thoughts???

I dont think so

This is my first post, but I've been reading SDN for quite awhile now (long enough to wait for MCAT scores on June 7, thanks to TPR). Anyhow, I'm also having mixed emotions about my score. I got a 33R, which I'm happy with, but the breakdown:

PS: 13
VR: 8
BS: 12

That's pretty much the worst I've ever done on verbal, but also the best I've done on PS and BS. I was making about 33 on my practices, but the breakdown is shocking. I'm a little worried about the verbal score, especially because I wanted to to get into a top 20 school. I'm a Master's student in Biomedical Engineering with a 3.9 gpa, but I had only a 3.2 undergrad (3.0 BCPM undergrad) as a Physics major at a top 10 university. Any thoughts?

I just posted about my score, and I also looked into the regrade option. According to the AAMC site, a regrade costs $50 for the mult choice and $50 for the writing sample. So, for $50 you can have them rescore all of the mult choice sections, or you can designate just one section. For mult choice, it takes 3 weeks, while it takes 4 months for the writing. Keep in mind that your score could potentially go down as well. There are a couple of old posts on SDN which claim that a regrade has never resulted in a changed score on a multiple choice section in the history of MCAT regrades, but I have no idea if this is true. Spilled water seems like a pretty good reason. I want to get a regrade just because my verbal was so much lower than I expected, but I think that's probably just money down the drain. Oh, you also have to include a letter that tells them what to regrade and why. I kinda wonder if they even regrade the people who say "my score seemed to low." Maybe something more legit like spilled water will be more compelling. Good luck.

Undergrad science grades were pretty good (3.6 something average). B+ and A- in Physics. B's in chem. I expected PS to be lower because I really was nervous, and I ran out of time and had to rush-bubble a number of questions at the end (maybe 10?). After that section I got my timing down and did much better. Also, early in the PS I realized I was mis-bubbling and had to erase and re-bubble (went down a column instead of over, or vice versa ... can't remember). Maybe worth having that section hand scored???? Although, I thought I erased completely so may not change anything.

So true story - on a practice test. I thought i did well on the bio section, got it back and got an 8, i was gonna cry i was so pissed. (i wouldn't have been, but i'd gotten 10's on the ones before). Found out I missbubbled - one off, and if i hadn't missbubbled, I would have gotten a 12. Yeah, it hurts... but it is a possibility for those who felt that they really should have done better... and no one can check their bubbles enough 🙂

Nothing is a sure in or a sure out. Ivy leagues just want to stamp your ass. So they want it to be going somewhere 🙂. haha. Just got done with Harvard, whoop whoop!

And a huge congrats on your score   Don't pay any attention to the M...it really doesn't matter at all. I wish I could join the ranks of the 30+ers on here!

Not too thilled but thankful overall.

Good luck to everyone on this application cycle! I believe we will make it after all the hardwork!

31's great man, anything >30 is competitive and will be a boon to an application. The av. MCAT scores at med schools are just that, averages, because after getting >30, they start looking at other things.

How's everybody? A day out and I'm still checking THx, checking the social security number, verifying the ID....can't believe it's finally over!

You are definitely a SDN bud! That goes without mentioning, you are my only World Cup fanatic! I read on another thread that you might retake? 29 is solid man.

Edit: With engineering and since you are still pretty young you are looking pretty good. Just a good story for you if you decide to retake, friend of mine in a similar situation a few years back scored a 28, but not matriculating for another two falls...so he retakes the test the next date by just practicing more---bam 35! You are solid man, good luck!

29 is great and I'm happy with it, but if I have one more shot to give it my all - I'll do it!

GO USA!!! And GO UKRAINE!!! (my country of birth, although I was 4 when I left and it was still called the USSR 😀 )

Its funny since you say that, since "DrVanNostran" AKA Kramer from Seinfeld has a famous quote from the show--"The Ukraine is weak." Then after he says that, an Ukrainian guy knocks over his risk board

When I took it 5 years ago I got PS 9, VR 12, BS 9, writing sample N. So... I guess I really thought that after all the biochem and molecular biology I have had to take for my MS in microbiology, the BS would be a lot higher this time around, and my practice scores supported that theory!! Oh well... on the real thing I didn't get any worse!!

On a more crappy note... not only did I not do quite as well as I hoped, I was supposed to be having dinner with my boyfriend tonight to celebrate the end of the 60-day wait... but instead I am pretty sure that not only is the wait for scores over but so are we. Bad timing!! So I am not feeling super great over all, and would appreciate any cheer up suggestions (movies to rent, distracting and fun books to read, etc).

It has been great to know over the last few months that I'm not the only one going crazy waiting for scores!! Now we can all go crazy waiting for secondaries, interviews, and acceptances!! Good luck to all of us!

Remember...the whole point of all of this is to get into medical school and become a physician, not to score in the top whatever percentile of the MCAT. Once we are all physicians, we will forget all about this thing called the MCAT! 😀

It's good enough to get me in where I want to go. Asking for more would just be ego-inflating. I don't want that, nooo.

But still, it would have been nice to make that nice, even 10pt improvement they guaranteed me.
