Hi April 2006 MCATers,

Some posters have requested that we have one serious thread where only announcements and information about the April 2006 MCAT score release are posted. This thread is it. After the scores are released (on JUNE 20TH!!!), y'all can post your scores in here as well. But in the meantime, please while away the time in the Official April 2006 thread so that we can avoid cluttering this one up with unrelated posts. As always, please remember that false score release posts and threads are a no-no, and good luck to everyone waiting. 🙂

Score: 35P (11VR, 11PS, 13BS)
1. Your Form (If you remember): JP?

2. Your Practice Score Range: 29-34

3. What you used to Study: Princeton Review

4. How do you feel right now????? Glad the test is over and I won't have to retake.

A SPECIAL NOTE TO ALL THE 1ST AND 2ND YEAR STUDENTS READING THIS: You do not have to take a prep course to do well. I took Princeton for the August test and it sucked and I hated it so I didn't end up taking it in August. I studied on my own for the April test and I did fine. Just borrow the books (Princeton or EK are good) study and take the official AAMC tests. I would not even bother with Princeton or Kaplan tests - they are not similar enough to the real thing!

I'm okay with my scores, considering I was too nervous to sleep the night before and didn't take a practice test. But I'm not sure if my scores are high enough to get into med school, should I retake the exam?

My GPA is 3.78 from Oberlin College.

Score: 34 (10VR, 13PS, 11BS)
1. Your Form (If you remember): FL

2. Your Practice Score Range: 29-30

3. What you used to Study: Exam Krackers, Kaplan

4. How do you feel right now????? Relieved, and super happy.

Just to reiterate: I am retaking from August. I took a prep course back then and scored sub 30. For the April exam I just studied on my own which I liked a lot better. I used Exam Krackers and the High Yield Guide from Kaplan.

Any help appriciated, should probably make a page or something, but just generally is this comeptative? DO? Carpet bomb my MD apps?

So many people have such great MCAT scores. CONGRATS TO ALL OF YOU! :clap:

Score: 34Q (11PS, 12V, 11BS)

1. AG, I think

2. 35s consistently and a 36 on the last one

3. Kaplan

4. Annoyed, I feel like this score pretty much knocks out my chances at my top schools (Michigan, Penn, Columbia, Cornell) but I don't feel like it's low enough that I want to retake in August since I work full-time. I'm a non-trad, 3.5 GPA, with pretty crappy EC's since I wasn't interested in med school in undergrad, so I was counting on a higher MCAT score to help me a the schools I really wanted. I'm right in thinking those schools would need at least one 12 in one of the sciences, right?

First off congrats to everyone, you all did wonderful! 👍

Secondly, Oxeye, Shaden, Jota, and Anastasis, I have kept dialogue with you guys through the countdown and other threads and wanted to wish you guys a special congratulations, since I know how hard you studied and you guys truly truly deserve your scores! I hope you guys still stay my SDN buddies :luck:

As for me: I am so relieved, I finally got the 30

VR:8
PS:11
BS:11
W: M---real bad day lol.

I am estatic!!!

Form: BG
Practice Test Range: 29-33
Materials Used: EK 1001, EK 101 Verbal, Kaplan Topicals, AAMC Tests, TPR review notes, and some other crap
How I feel: 👍 😀

Way to goDrVanNostran! We both broke 30+ 😀

People on this forum do much better than the average, and I can understand why people with scores good enough to get into medical school can feel inadequate. Everyone, if you are happy with your scores, be happy! 😀

If you persevere towards your goals, you will make it! How you do on the MCAT doesn't make or break your goal towards entering medical school or becoming a physician. In the end, we will all become physicians if we are dedicated! 🙂

I'm sorry, but crap like this makes me angry. You got a freakin' 34! That probably puts you in thr 85 or greater percentile.

Thanks doc, grats on your uber score 👍 You should definitly get into one of your state schools without a doubt!

SDN truly has many members who are the cream of the crop, I mean how many awesome scores have we seen! Its uncanny. Remember everyone, the average to get into med school is 30-31, so don't fret when you see all these wild scores🙂

Now I have to debate what to do in the next year...

Do you guys think I should retake in Aug?

Thanks

How much more do you really think you can improve and what was your practice range? I mean, a 29 and early application might be better than a 30 and a late application...

i agree, getting a late interview really really sucks donkey almonds

Is it me, or am i the only one feeling mediocre sitting here in the forums with a 31S with folks complaining that they will have to retest in august with a score thats like a 34. Are SDN folks superachievers and of the highest caliber in the country with supreme expectations or is the country nowdays becoming more genius and I'm sitting here in the mediocre crowd lol. someone shed some light damn you!!! 🙂

i would apply to med with a phd. I hear that med schools love phd students cause of the process in getting such a degree are very similar to that of the MCAT in that it requires very similar characteristics of its applicants.

Yes; we are over-achievers here on SDN! :laugh:

The average MCAT is around a 24-25. The average MCAT for those accepted to medical school (non URM) is 30-31. I'm sure the average score for those on SDN is even higher. Remember that these are just averages, and the MCAT is only one part (albiet an important one) of your entire application. Also, remember that the MCAT is partly a crap-shoot with many variables besides your smarts or knowledge going into it. It's partly a mind-game, endurance test, IQ test, reasoning test, and sadistic fun for those who administer the test. 🙂

I had the same form as you (CK) and also had lower verbal scores. It didn't seem that though, but I guess they must have had too many "close" answers on that section

So you are soooooooooo going to be getting an automatic interview from UMich. I also think you may get a phone interview with Mayo though don't know about getting beyond that cuz its tough.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!! Great score by the way!!!!!!!!!

point taken. im really tempted to retake with my 31S to raise my verbal to a repsectable level. But my real goal was to get around a 30 so i could get into a special masters program, which i did already. I guess ill wow adcoms through the grades i get there in medical biochem and medical physiology, apparently adcoms think its one of the few classes that truly determine how successful you will be in med school. What are everyones plans for now?

CONGRATS!!!!!!!!! I remember your disappointment with the 6 in VR from last year bringing down your score. I'm so glad to see it worked out.

Hi guys,

It's been a while since I've visited SDN. I just wanted to see how well everyone did.

Personally, I think the fact that you scored a "S" on the writing sample eliminates any doubt about your verbal capacity...I would look at your score and think your verbal performance was an anomaly. DON'T RETAKE THE MCAT!!! Read through the stats on retakers...I think you will find it is not worth it!

yea i am tempted, but im not crazy 😉

I have decent english grades in college, and my personal statement is well written and prepared. this should be good enough to detract from worries from the VR. Not to mention an AAMC letter about test disturbance. Thanks danjo!

No sweat! You know...I was floored when I saw my score initially. As you may or may not have seen in previous threads, I did not have the opportunity to prepare for the exam due to my work schedule. So I was pretty pumped about my 33P...it's amazing though how many overachievers we have on this forum...as you see the upper 30s and low 40s being posted over and over again...you start to think that your score that puts you somewhere between the 80-90 percentile is no longer special or good enough!
But...I assure you that it is. We WILL be attending a medical school next year!

Hey, let me throw this out there for some of you. I talked to braluk last night briefly and my situation is similar to hers.

VR = 13
PS = 7
BS = 10
WS = R
Total = 30R

I havn't had physics or chemistry in 10 years, which is what killed my PS section. Do you think that 7 hurts too badly if otherwise my app is strong?? Re-take??

nope, your verbal score is great and will cover that, don't re-take unless you really are convinced that its worth your time and you can improve significantly

34L (12 VR, 11 PS, 11 BS)

1) Form CP

2) Practice score range: 30-35 (diagnostic was a 22)

3) I took the Kaplan class and used the EK study books, thought EK was much better but taking the proctored practice exams really helped.

4) Right now I'm still psyched (not quite so much as I was last night when the scores first came out), but still quite happy, with a little bit of puzzlement over my WS.

Haemulon, unless you were getting 35+ on you practice tests, I wouldn't retake it. That's a fine score.

Congrats to all you guys. Go drink some beer for Ownage.

Thanks for the input all. I never took a practice test. Took this thing "cold."

Contratulations to everyone for making it through. This has really been a nail-biter of a time!

Just a thought here...have you considered retaking Physics and General Chemistry during this summer, fall, or spring. I don't think you should re-take the MCAT, but if you are taking measures to bring up your knowledge base in those subjects, I think it would speak volumes to ADCOMs. You would be acknowledging your deficiency (I hate to refer to it as such!), but taking aggressive action to correct it! This would be something you could address in the PS of AMCAS to get those secondaries rolling in!

Have you considered that at all?

Just in case it wasn't completely clear, I only recommend this b/c you know that your PS performance was due to the fact that you haven't taken the material in 10 years...if that is truly why you achieved that score, then ADCOMs may be concerned about your knowledge base in these areas...so it may be good to take refresher courses!

Hmmm. You raise an interesting suggestion. I'm not sure if I could fit in full courses in physics and chemistry as I am now also working full time and taking classes for my Masters (also writing my thesis). Plus I am expecting twins due in October. However, I think you are right in that I need to show some aggressive action towards remediating the deficiency. Hmmmm. I need to come up with something. Also, I guess it would not be in my best interest to emphasize the time lapse. Perhaps i'll try to explain the reason for the low score differently.

I have my first baby (a boy!) due on October 24th! Congrats on the twins!

What field are you obtaining a masters degree in?

Congrats to you too!

I already have one masters in Biology, gpa 3.88 (emphasis in molecular genetics and evolution). This second one is in biomedical sciences at a local medical school (have a 4.0 there). Undergrad was in biology with minor in religious studies, gpa 3.54.

Hello all. I just checked my score:

series: 31
Verbal: 12
Physical: 12
Writing: M
Biological: 11

What does the "series" entry mean? Did I get a 31 or a 35?

Wow...with a masters in Biology and Biomedical Sciences, you should not have to retake Physics and General Chemistry! I think we should work on a different explanation for the 7!
