**Official MD/PhD 2008 Interview Invite Thread**

Does anyone happen to know when the other Hopkins MSTP interview dates are? I got a call today for 9/26-9/27, but that date unfortuantely coincides directly with when I move in and classes start (quarter system...), not to mention that my suit is due to come back from the tailors just a few days before the aforementioned date! Point being, I think the date is a bit too close for comfort.

Anyway, I asked the program administrator if there were other dates, and she listed off a bunch in October, but I was right by the MetroLink station, and was having trouble hearing what she said. I had already asked her to repeat stuff earlier in the conversation, so I felt bad about asking her to repeat the dates again. I've checked the MSTP website and wasn't able to find any further info. Can anyone help me out here? Thanks!

so i'm having the same deal that a lot of you have talked about with cornell. thanks j weezy for the link btw - my status is still under consideration and so I must continue to wait. It's painful all this anticipating. I've also gotten 2 interviews so far, but they've both been for MD. I'm not sure why since I applied MD/PhD and I thought that your application wasn't deferred until after it was considered by MD PhD. My application is still under consideration for MD/PhD and they told me that I might have to interview a second time. Has anyone experienced this?

Yeah they said they'll put you up in a Holiday Inn near campus on the first night, then have you stay with an MD/PhD student the second night.

Hmm, that seems like a lot of moving around. Oh well - its paid for! Did they say anything about transportation from the airport? Are you flying into Detroit? Did you learn this from the packet of info they send you or over the phone? (ok that's a lot of questions!) They told me they would send me stuff in the mail but didn't really specify the contents.

Thanks Pickles! Maybe I just needed to hit the bottom of the pit of despair/self-doubt so that the high would be that much better (ok, I'm being over-dramatic here). Anyway, when were you complete? I got the complete email on Aug 23rd. Just focus on getting the rest of your secondaries in (from your MDApps it looks like you are still working) and I'm sure you will start to hear back soon!

8:17 PM. If you're coming in at the same time we should split a taxi to the hotel. Same goes for the flight home. I'm leaving at 6:08 out of Detroit on Friday; Michigan said that the medical school will be done with their activities by 2 or 2:30 and that should leave plenty of time to get there.

Major: Biomedical Engineering
MCAT: PS:14 BS:11 VR:8 W:Q (The verbal is my main concern)
GPA: 4.0
Research: Two summers at MCW in transplant surgery (Listed as author on one abstract/poster presentation). One summer at Baxter Healthcare.
Other: Run triathlons, President of AEMB, Tutoring/TAing, probably some other things I listed on my AMCAS that I don't want to bore anybody with.

I'm not looking for pity like the people in the pre-allo forum--I need some honest feedback and I appreciate it.

I think your MCAT is fine. Your sciences are in the double-digits, which is good. Some adcoms will be able to overlook your verbal, some may not, I am not sure. In your case, I think they will. Especially because it is MD/PhD. GPA-great, obviously. Reserach is a little low. Summers are difficult because it takes a long time to get things done. You spend some time settling, learning protocol, knowing people, do a little work, and then summer is over! It would be nice to have at least a full-academic year where you were involved in a research project. Honestly, I think adcoms are looking for much more research than you have.

With saying that, I would never tell anyone not to apply. This process is not 100% predictable and I'm not an expert. Truly, I think if you believe in yourself, know that you have a lot to offer, and don't mind spending the time or the $$ to do it, go for it.

I know a few people who got into a UC MSTP with a verbal 9. I think you should be OK. :luck:

j-weezy, when was your file complete at case? Mine has been complete there since 8/10 & I haven't heard anything from them. How did they contact you?
 
I had everything submitted 7/24 but wasn't marked as complete (electronic LORs I think) until 8/08. They sent me an email yesterday evening inviting me to an MD/PhD interview and when I check my Case status it says I've been invited for a regular University interview (which is ignored in lieu of the MSTP invite).

To echo passion4dna, it seems that the only salient weakness in your application is duration of research. I've heard from adcoms and past applicants that having only summer research can impede an application; it's better to have at least one academic year of independent study or paid research by the time that you apply. I really doubt that your verbal is a huge problem for MD/PhD adcoms, but it might be a problem for those schools that separately consider you for MD and MD/PhD.

I think your best bet is to arrange to do research during the academic year (i.e., right now). If you've already graduated, it wouldn't hurt to get a full-time lab job just in case your MSTP applications this year don't pan out.

With all that said, I think you should still have some success. There was a poster on the board who applied last year with awesome (similar) credentials and didn't do as well as he would have liked; he seemed to attribute it to the lack of research during the academic year (he had similar summer research experiences). Nevertheless, he ultimately was accepted to an awesome MSTP, so I'm hopeful that you will be as well.

Thanks for the input--right now I am still working with Baxter Healthcare, but on a different project (not "pure" research, we are building a medical device)--I didn't put this on any of my applications because I did not know I was going to be doing it. Should I add this to my applications? Thanks everybody.

Definitely, especially if you think you eventually would be patenting the device.

Congratulations. Same question here. Completed in mid-July and have never heard from since. I suddenly feel like I want my money back... 😛
 
did you guys ever get a complete email from mssm? all i got was an email saying my secondary was done. i know they have my virtual evals letters though.
 
I never got a complete e-mail, but I called them during their miniscule window for status checking and found out that I was "under review" as of last week...so I guess that implies completion 🙂.
 
pennquaker, when is mt sinai's calling window? i can't find it on their website.
 
look in pre-allo...there's a status check thread with all the info. I believe it's only Monday and Wednesdays from like 11 - 2 or something.

can I see a t-test or q-test for that data? lol. I think M-W is about the same.

Is this by when an individual posted or when they said they were invited? Do you count the total number of invites (ie. 3 people from Michigan in one day
or something - does that counts as 3 or as 1?) or just the day?

Either way - should our anticipation decrease as the week progresses and peak sunday night?
