August 2006 MCATers -

This is the official score release thread for the August 2006 MCAT. Feel free to post serious information and announcements about the impending score release. You can post your scores in here when the time comes as well. Post any random musings in the Official August 2006 Score Release Countdown Thread so that we can keep this one uncluttered. 🙂

Best of luck to everyone waiting!

30L (12PS, 07VR,11BS) and L??????????? What the heck??? I am considering retaking, what do you guys think?

Oops, I have my BS and PS switched

12 PS
7 VR -This sickens me
11 BS
L -This is just embarrassing

By the way,

*Form CL
*Practice score range: 26-33 on 12 or 13 tests
*Used Kaplan class, and Examkrackers for PS
*I have very mixed feelings, half of the scores are great, half suck. I am going to contact an admissions advisor and get their opinion. And Kaplan isn't worth the money.

Here's my MCAT history

April 2002 - 24M
August 2002 - 26O
April 2004 - 27M
August 2006 30M

I had a friend who went to Yale with a 39. I'm surprised to see all these people feeling let down by scores in the 30's.

Wow, I guess MCAT scores were up at 9 or 10. I got a phone call at 2:30 am. I had just got back from the Deuce(a cheap dive bar that lots of students at Northwestern go to on thursdays), and I'm completey wrecked when my boy calls me to say scores are up. My practice scores were in order 31,29,31,32,34,31,34,35,38. With anything less than a 35 I would've been real dissapointed just because I gave the MCAT my all for three weeks(I was in Kaplan first six weeks of summer but most of my attention was going to physics summer school). I just used Kaplan to study, I took a course, so I had proctored tests and the like. Anyways I'm in my friends room trying to use his computer to get scores and its bugging the **** out of me, I'm also drunk so Im just getting pissed. I go back and try it in my room. I reregister then reset my password, after about 20 minutes or so I make it in. 37Q, 14 PS, 11 VR, Q WS, 12 BS. I'm ecstatic, light up the hookah(while I was out a couple of my boys had taken it upon themselves to smoke while I'm gone), call my parents and my friend who told me that scores were up. I just wanted to tell anyone, I ran through the floors in my house yelling it and just want to tell people. Most everyone in my house was like wtf, except the premeds who can sympathize. Alot of them were still up though since they went out last night too. Pass out after smoking and watching some tv, barely wake up at 10 am and remember I have cell cultures incubating which I have to get out and check for expression on.

It was my first time taking it, and just wanted to get it over with so I took it right after soph yr(Im a junior now). It's tight though, now I don't have to give it a second thought.

I am pleased with a 35S. Works for me. I took this previously one time, without studying assuming that my undergrad education would have prepared me and I got a 28L that time, so the biggest increase was in writing from a L (2-10%) to an S (~97-99.6%), but unfortunately, writing means jack so whatever. Anybody know where i can find a free release of current med school ranking by MCAT by the way?

Retake it. Even if all ur other stuff is outstanding, the 7 on your verbal is like a huge pimple on the nose. The L just makes that pimple have a white dot on top of it since that's how they are going to connect it. And yes, I think if you went to a decent college, then ALL test preps are stupid (Kaplan, TPR, Berkeley Review). But you pay for it so that you feel obligated to study in a way. The second time i took the MCAT, I just self preped since TPR didn't really teach me much except the content of the test. If you self-motivate yourself, you'd save a lot of money and probably would do better unless a topic is really confusing for you. In your case, just take 2342424 Verbal passages and you'll get it. 😛 😛 😛 Verbal isn't something you learn in a few months. Kaplan/TPR will give you tricks that might give you a few more questions right, but most of it is just reading fast and looking for the answer, like a Where's Waldo book.

Don't bother finding one, that's not how you should decide on which schools to apply to. I hope you don't become a ranking's *****.

i'm not.. i just want to look down on places with lower scores than what i got for a while, being absolutely as petty as i can, b/c i damn well feel like it! SON!

so...
anybody know a place where i can get a hold of a free current ranking of med schools by MCAT?

Go to your college pre-med advisor if you have one and look at the MSAR book or look on US News at your local barnes & nobles.

I'm really glad you guys are like 1% of the people taking the MCATs and not at all representative of the scores...holy sweet mother of jesus...the stuff i've seen on these boards are amazing. GOOD JOB, EVERYONE!!! CONGRATS!!

I'm happy with what I got, though:
33S

11 PS
10 VR
12 BS

I thought I failed. This was a nice surprise.

a few months ago i would have told you that verbal wasn't that important, but representatives from Jefferson, Drexel, UMDNJ, Temple, and UPenn told me otherwise... that it was more important to them than Physical sciences.

BUT, they said if for some reason you had a low verbal, the next thing they would look at was your writing sample to see if you also had problems there, so that is the only instance in which your writing sample is considered, and seeing as you did well i wouldn't be concerned about it.

also, a 9 is not an incredibly low score, so I don't know what you're trying to do application wise, but that's still a very good score and i wouldn't be worried at all. (provided everything else is good)

I studied on my own using some old TPR material my friend had and took practice tests from aamc: 7,8,9 (37,38,41).

A couple of day ago I was feeling very optimistic, I was predicting 40P. But come to think of it I never felt the "flow" during the PS and VR. I guess I am satisfied, but all these high scores make me feel competitive and think about where I dropped the 4-5 questions in PS and VR that would have sent my score through the ceiling.

Much respect to all who went through this difficult process. I am glad I do not have to do it again.

Test Date: 08/19/2006
Verbal Reasoning (VR): 09 Percentile Range: 52 - 69
Physical Sciences (PS): 08 Percentile Range: 39.6 - 54.5
Writing Sample (WS): S Percentile Range: 96.9 - 99.6
Biological Sciences (BS): 10 Percentile Range: 61.5 - 78.2
Total Score: 27S Percentile Range: 56.6 - 62.5
State of Residence: CA
Non-Standard Conditions: N
Test Format: Paper

Should have done all of TPR homework. Read examkrackers for the last 2 months, took time off of work for the last month and went hardcore with the practice tests.
If I don't get in this year, I'll retake MCAT and really put in time for the homework. 🙄

I hope schools look at the writing score. =(

I took the Berkeley Review course to prepare for the test. My range was 27-34. I'm slightly disappointed that I didn't beat my highest score like seemingly everyone else I know, but I'm also relieved at being done and having a semi-okish score. Also I didn't really prepare at all for the writing section, so I'm sort of confused at how that happened. Who knows...maybe double majoring with a humanities may have been a good idea after all. Congrats to everyone that slew the beast.

30Q...10's and a Q. I'm quite happy, had recurring nightmares of scoring in the lower 20's. Congrats to all! Practice scores: ranged from 24-33.

You have to login to the MCAT Thx website to be able to see your scores. They did not update it up on the main page just on the THx site. They uploaded scores at about midnight last night.

That's quite sweet - did your parents get that for you? I like it, this is one beast that def deserves the cake treatment! good job with the score too.

i'm still lovin the 37 candles on the cake....

Yeah I didn't study at all because I really did not want to take it but my Mom wanted me to. I ended up with a 30P which I though was not too shabby for not studying. Good too because I need a boost in self esteem. After seeing all of the 38 and 40+ scores I'm thinking that I better study for the next time I take it. I realize that people who are seriously interested in medicine are smarter than average but I'd just like to know how much some of the really high scorers studied.

first time I took it, I didn't study either and got a 30 also. Took it again in August with some pretty hardcore studying and got a 38...

It feels a lot better this time around 👍

But a 30 will get you in nonetheless... you probably aren't ready for med school quite yet though (I know I wasn't when I took it the first time in April 2004  )

I had not taken physics, or chemistry in over ten years, so as soon as I knew I was taking MCAT (June) I bought the exam krackers set and studied five to six hours a day, five days a week. The week before the test, I studied as often as I could. Really, I was shooting for a score high enough to get into a Master of Science in Anesthesia, but with a 39 and a 3.8 GPA in genetics, I am now considering medical school (have no EC or volunteer experience so it's a shot in the dark).

Your MCAT and GPA are awesome. It's never too late to get EC's or volunteer experience, unless you are applying this cycle, in which case, you're in trouble. You still might convince some schools, even great ones, to accept you with your stellar academic record, though.

Thanks for that. I really feel it's a crapshoot, bc I have no EC's and yes, if I apply it will be for this cycle. Waiting almost two years to begin medical school is not really an option for us financially. I am still applying to the MSA programs (27 month program) which would mean that I could bring in revenue, sock away money and apply later if need be. I really wish I had known what I wanted ten years ago.

Hey all,
I was just wondering what you think...
A 36+ is about a 95%ile score and there have been a lot of high scores posted, I am postulating that there is a correlation between high scores and readers/posters on this website. Is it that the people who are on this website are more motivated or interested(obsessed??) in getting in to med school than the people who are getting sub 30 scores?
It just seems that there are a lot of those so-called elusive high scores being posted. Just a thought
12/12/12P

I say go for it. Apply to a wide range of schools and see what happens, you might be surprised. It should only cost a few thousand dollars, which is a lot of money, but less than the cost of waiting another year to matriculate. Good luck, and I encourage using this site (and the other forums) throughout the process. 👍

Not high enough to offset my 3.0 overall GPA, but high enough to know I'll make it as a physician regardless of which route I choose. YEAH!!!!!

No EC's here and no desire to wait either.

You can always do a special masters program which would help. I'd talk with adcom directors at schools of interest and see what they say.

You got a 30!!!!! Why are you retaking it??! (unless you're applying MSTP or MD/PhD)
