Ahh Yes, the official Penn Waitlist Watcheroo. I know movement won't happen for a week or more. None the less, I had to start the thread, I'll bump it in a week. I'll admit it, I'm manic depressive right now. :-/

Right there with you, although I wouldn't expect too much movement until the beginning of May or so--There aren't going to be that many people who decline their acceptances at Penn until the May deadline approaches. . .

Anyone wanna trade?

Seriously though, I bet there are a decent number of other applicants out there who are in a position like mine. It's too bad all the schools can't get together and trade acceptees or something, so that someone like me could swap with someone who got into Duke but really wants to go to Penn, but was waitlisted. Of course, that'd probably screw up the whole waitlist ranking thing. It's just a thought...wishful thinking <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

I called today and they said that they haven't taken anyone off the waitlist today and we would hear by a phone call if accepted. The wait is killing me!

How many people usually get off the waitlist and do you know when the majority of people hear?

The waitlist faq said anywhere from 12-50. And most movement will happen after the 15th, but it could happen at anytime from here on out.

I don't really trust the FAQ because it also says that the waitlist isn't ranked and thats clearly not true. Anyone want to call and see if they can get any current info on the waitlist status?

Hey, Dr. L et al...

I called last Wed (4/17) and posted my info in the Waitlist Movement thread and I'm copying my post directly from there...

UPENN UPDATE: I talked with Gaye Sheffler on the 17th, she said they haven't seen as much movement as they usually do by this time as far as people withdrawing their acceptances to go to other schools. They still have more people holding acceptances than they have spots for, so they haven't started pulling anyone off the waitlist yet. She anticipates they will, just later than usual. SO UPenn waitlisters hold on to hope!!!

I feel blessed and priviledged to be able to post on this thread with good news!!!

Rec'd the news on Friday via FedEx priority overnight (I didn't receive a call or email, only in writing)... ACCEPTED off the waitlist !!!

Good luck to everyone!!! It can be done with persistence and hope!!

Thanks to everyone for being SO supportive!!

😀 😀

Wow, congrats!!! 😀 Is that your top choice?

oooh yeah, GG16!!!

You're all that, and congrats to you! I spent the day there today and got really positive feedback from everyone from students to Dr. Rosenquist (Dean of Basic Sci. Ed.) and Gaye. She reassured that when the waitlist starts moving (and it has!) many of us have reason to keep our hopes up.

Thanks all!!!!!!!!!!!

Penn is absolutely my #1 choice and I am SO excited to finally know where I am going to be (especially since I have to be out of my apt. by June 31st!!) 😀

Has anyone emailed Gaye, and then received a response from her?

thanks...im wondering if its worth it.

thanks...im wondering if its worth it.•••••i emailed her once and got a response fairly quickly, but when i emailed back she never responded. she did say that she prints out emails people send her and sticks them in their files to show that they're interested in penn.

🙂

What is Gaye's email address?

gaye's e-mail
[email protected]
I would suggest calling her if you haven't yet...I was e-mailing her for a while about my financial aid and wasn't hearing back from her...I guess last week she was on vacation so she's still trying to catch up with work so if you really nedd to get into contact with her-call, if it's not that pressing e-mail is safe

So, I called and asked to speak with Gaye about the waitlist (information I think I am entitled to) and my situation of being married (a reasonable topic to discuss with the admissions officer of a medical school I would like to attend) on Tuesday. The secretary said she was busy, and that she would call me back. So, I waited two days, didn't hear anything from Ms. Sheffler, and decided to call back on thursday. But when I called back, the secretary asked for my name, told me to hold for a minute, then came back to say that Ms. Sheffler is "extremely busy" and that "the waitlist won't move at all until the 15th" which we at SDN, of course, know isn't true (congrats GC16!) and without any offer to call back or suggestion of another time to call. Also, I received this curt reply without ever having asked about the waitlist, I just asked to speak with Ms. Sheffler.
So, the question is, have I branded myself as "that annoying applicant who won't stop calling" by calling back? Dare I persevere and call yet again?
And, am I really spending time worrying about how I come off during a phone call? I hate this process because it makes me feel like a middle schooler calling some girl that I have a crush on for the first time: "Do you think she likes me?" "Should I call her again even though she hasn't called me back?" "Do you think she's mad at me?" Sheesh! I'm pathetic.

Capitan,
don't trip...I actually had to do the same thing to get my financial aid situation straight. She really was busy last week (she told me) because she went on vacation for a week following penn preview, a rest well deserved may I add---she was running around like a mad woman and a lot of folks got snapped at because they were bombarding her with questions about their about their aid packages. Honestly, I wouldn't call for a while but I WOULD e-mail her, she may or may not write back, but I guarantee she will read it and it will get put in your file. Then I would call her back in a week or so, because that IS the quickest way to get any answers, if not the only way in this jacked up process. Good luck dude! Gaye really is a great person and is dedicated to helping out applicants in any way she can...it just must get a little overwhelming at this time of the year when everyone on the waitlist get's so anxious to know where they stand...

Capitan-

I would wait until the end of this week or rather, the beginning of next week (would that be the 20th). True, I did get in off the waitlist, but there were a bunch of strange circumstances surrounding my application in that Gaye basically admitted that something went wrong with my app because she 'didn't know why I wasn't accepted' and as such, invited me to the preview weekend.

So, again, even though it seems like the waitlist is moving, I would caution you and say that it really hasn't been in the truest sense. From speaking with Gaye, I and one other person in a similar circumstance have been the only ones accepted off the waitlist so far.

From what I understand (and, of course, it makes sense) the waistlist will really begin to move a week from tomorrow -- give them Friday to process all of the withdrawals -- hopefully there'll be a bunch so y'all get in!!!

I hope this doesn't sound like I think I am some special case, but there really was some screwy rationale behind my not being admitted (my student interviewer told me, for example, that my app was rated 10+/10 by the admissions committee post-interview). I know how frustrating this all can be and I was there a couple of weeks ago!

Hang in there -- there's a fine line between annoying and persistent -- I would write her once every two weeks for a total of two times and then begin to call. When she has something positive to say, believe me, she'll speak to you. Remember that up until Preview Weekend (Apr. 25-27), they were absolutely insane with all their preparations and were non-stop since September. this is basically their first breather since everything began last summer.

One more thing:

Last year's stats for waitlist movement after May:

Offers in June: 32
Offers in July 6
Offers in Aug/Sept. 0
Total offers after May: 38
------------------------------------

Of course, this doesn't even quantify the candidates admitted in May (which is probably less than the June offers, though).

This data shows that almost 1/3 of the entire first year class was admitted after May, which should give you all a lot of faith!!!!!

Hang in there and be patient (I know how contradictory this sounds, especially since I no longer have to worry) but believe me, if you don't think about it that much -- try to keep busy -- time goes by more quickly and you'll know sooner than you think!

I hope you all get in!!!!!

(feel free to PM me with any questions)
