Applicant,

We have completed our initial review of applications received for the doctoral program in clinical psychology. This year we received almost 400 applications for only a handful of slots, and the caliber of these applications was exceptionally high. The purpose of the initial review was to select a small group of applicants to be invited for interviews. I regret to inform you that you were not among those selected to be interviewed. The bases for our decisions—which I can assure you were extremely difficult—included the following: academic record, fit with the program and with a particular research group, personal statement, research experience and letters of reference.
Please note that we very occasionally conduct a second round of review and make later invitations to interview days (Feb. 16th and 20th). Therefore, you have not yet been formally eliminated from consideration. However, it is important to stress that the chances that you will be granted an interview are very small.
I wish you success throughout this application process.
Very Sincerely,

DCT

Whomp whomp. . . that was my first choice 🙁

Aww, I'm sorry. Drexel is super competitive, I know. 🙁

I feel your pain. When I got that email my heart sank because Drexel was one of my top choices too. At least it was worded nicely. Shrugs.

Generic, mass e-mail rejection from UMass-Boston

my first, of many.

Official electronic notification from Yale - no go. They claim 9,500 applicants this year. I hope and pray that was for all of their graduate programs.

Thank you very much for applying to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Yale University. I regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you admission. As you know, the very high number of extraordinary candidates among our 9,500 applicants far exceeds the number of places we have in each program, and we are not able to admit many excellent candidates.

We are using this system of electronic notification to communicate with you five to ten days more rapidly than we could by letter and, therefore, help applicants plan their futures quickly and effectively. We wish you every
success in all your endeavors.

Sincerely,

Holy cow, that's a lot of people.

Sorry to hear this, you guys!

U Mich rejection emails are going out today!!
It sucks but it is MUCH better than waiting in uncertainty.

Oh well....

I'm starting to feel the "I'm not getting in anywhere" freak out vibes!

Don't freak out yet, some schools haven't even finished reviewing applications. I also freaked about mid-January but I quickly developed a contingency plan and I feel much better.

ughhhh, I also got this.
even though I was expecting it, it still makes me a little sad 🙁

Rejection email sent 1/27. Received official rejection letter in the mail a couple days ago. 👎

Official rejection for Yale! Wahoo! Let the good times roll! (when I am rejected I think that I get exclamation happy!)

Yale told me to get lost as well. Well, not in those exact words. I knew I should have kept that 90 bucks.

Ohhh, 9,500 was for all of their grad programs! That makes much more sense.

9,500 x $60 (I am not sure how much they charge for applications) = $570,000! Where does all of that money go?

I heard a news report that this year Harvard had 30,000 applicants for undergraduate admissions. 30,000 x $50 (probably a low estimate)= $1,500,000!

I posted this in the invite thread as well, but to those who got rejected from Loyola, did they include a form you can send in to have your application be considered for one of their master's programs? What are your thoughts on that as an option if you don't get into any of the programs you wanted to?

Hi...How did you hear about your rejection from Clark University? I know one POI sent out emails but I haven't received any rejection news? Did they email/call/snail mail?

Peace.😎

Rejected from BC Counseling Psychology program (e-mailed the DCT and he said they are done inviting people, but that I will receive info about the MA program soon) and U Mass Boston (mass e-mail). 🙁 🙁

do you know if they'll be emailing info about the MA program or snail mailing it?

I know the admissions process isn't cheap for the university either, so not all of that fee is profit, but SOME of it is. I do think that if a school has cut-offs for GRE / GPA it is unethical not to publish them, since it encourages application from people who are going to get cut in the first round.

Of course, the school has no reason to do this, since applications eliminated in the first, numeric round are close to pure profit for the university (and pure cost for the student).

I am not bitter.

I just got an email (nicely worded at least) about my rejection from U of Nebraska's clinical program. This makes my second rejection (Drexel, too)...I'm not feeling like this is my year... 🙁

He didn't say, but I'm guessing they'll send it by e-mail, since I haven't gotten much snail mail from schools (just one letter from Drexel saying my application was complete).

U of Kentucky has already sent out acceptances so it's only a matter of time before I get a nice rejection letter or they update my online status (which still says "Routed' in spite of everything, huh).

I know! I interviewed there on Friday and it is torturous waiting for them to call. I wish they would call with rejections too... 30 calls isn't too much to ask.

Anyways, I am looking into working as an RA for a year and then reapplying. Do you think it would be weird to reapply to UK a year after being rejected? Although Dr. Smith did say we could talk to him for feed back if we get rejected, which I think I am going to do once I get the official rejection.

Congrats on at least getting an interview--I didn't even get one of those. 😀

I'm planning on doing that, so I don't think it would be weird at all.

Me too.... my first rejection. Oh well...

Do all schools contact you to inform you that you were rejected? Or do some schools expect you to call and find out?

At what point do you accept that you have most likely been rejected?

I have seen a few posts on SDN that people were invited to interview at schools I applied to. If I haven't heard from that school at all should I just assume I was rejected??

I'm sorry if these questions are stupid but I am just not familiar with this whole process.

I personally believe that you are never truly out of the game until you receive that rejection letter or email.

Schools have very different methods of extending invites/acceptances. Some only do one batch of invites (which you can therefore strike that school of your list); however, some will do additional rounds if they haven't filled spots (and these can come VERY late in the game). Also, schools may choose to have all their faculty meet and decide on a pool of applicants, whereas other schools leave it up to the POI to narrow it down, extend the invites, and conduct the interviews with only a deadline when this should be entirely finished (thus, leaving a lot of time span between potential invites from different faculty).

With all that said, I think it is fine to call the graduate departments of each school and ask their estimated time frame for extending invites. But keep in mind that the person you are talking to may or may not have specific information.

If you're getting negative feedback on here (invites went out weeks ago or the interview is right around the corner) plus negative feedback from the school ("we're done with invites"), I think it is a fair assumption that you are out of luck from a statistical standpoint. I have, however, heard of people STILL getting invites at this stage, but it is extremely rare.

My advice is to use the info off of SDN, grad cafe, and school admin that you may speak to (NOT those directly involved with the decisions like POIs)... to set realistic expectations... BUT don't count it as a total loss until you received that rejection directly from your POI or the school.

Because schools typically mail out rejection letters AFTER the entire process is complete, you should expect them in March and April. I know I already received a nicely worded email from one of my schools that basically said "we wanted to let you know that its not going to happen". Another also, sent an email saying "that all invites have been extended but there is a SLIM chance of getting an interview if those invited don't work out but that this is a rare occurrence" (i.e. I'm not getting in). I went ahead and put them on my BIG-OL-NO list. 😛

Thanks for the advice!
This whole process is so nerve wracking 🙁

UT Austin finally updated their status check page in the past few hours.

Second official denial (following Drexel). Only one interview so far and somewhat counting on one more. The odds are definitely stacking against me... but all it takes is one!! :xf:

I got my first rejection today from Texas Tech.

It actually said they had selected two groups of applicants, one to come on interview day and one group "who are alternates for admission." I was not in either of those groups.

Official rejection email from UT southwestern today!

Dear Applicant,

As you are aware, the application process for the Doctoral Program in
Clinical Psychology at
UT Southwestern is highly competitive, and each year we must turn away
many qualified individuals. This year is no exception, and we are sorry
to inform you that we will not be able to offer you a place in our
Graduate Program in Clinical Psychology at this time.

Called the Secretary and she informed me that I was not among the ones selected 👎 The wait continues :xf:

Official rejection letter via snail mail from University of Missouri Saint Louis. Thought I had a shot there too. They are even so sweet as to tell you in the letter that reapplying is probably a futile effort. woot!

I shall quote:

"...I am sorry to inform you that we will not be able to offer you admission to the clinical program this year.
The program received 120 applications, and, due to financial considerations, we are able to admit only five students this year. Hence, competition was especially keen. We have many more qualified applicants than we have space in the program.
Many students are interested to know whether a reapplication to our program will be successful. In past years, a few students who have reapplied have been admitted. However, this is the exception rather than the rule. Due to the high number of applicants each year, a reapplication is unlikely to be accepted unless the applicant's record has substantially improved.
We appreciate your interest in our program and extend our best wishes for your future studies...."

eh, its no big deal. I am accepted at one school (albiet an expensive school) and have an interview at another. They were both back-up professional phd programs, but i'm still waiting on 2 more universities. Either way I'll be starting my phd next fall, even if it will break my bank acount for the next 30 years...😀

Received my first rejection letter today from Loyola MD's PsyD program - one day after I e-mailed admissions asking about the status of my application! Oh well, I'm still hopeful for the others!🙂

UNC's website said (as of 1/30) that they had extended all invites for their only interview day, which is 2/20.
