Rejection from UCLA. 2nd rejection for me. Can someone suggest to them that it may be a tad more empathic not to require rejected applicants to scurry around finding passwords and sublinks to get the mass rejection letter that could have easily been sent in the email itself, like my first rejection (UMich)?

Fortunately I was well prepared for it, both expecting it and having interview offers elsewhere to soften the blow, and the main thing is that it's nice to know and cross it off my list of schools to worry about 🙂

When I emailed the secretary at Kentucky she said the process is over and rejection letters should be sent out this week. So I'm guessing that if you haven't heard anything from them as of now then you didn't get an interview and to expect a rejection letter this week. As for South Carolina, I got a response from the contact in their department and it said their process is over and they're not inviting anymore people. So again, if you didn't receive an invitation as of now, I wouldn't expect one.

Re: Kentucky - oh good, something to look forward to. 😉

I hope it's at least a nice letter.

I was wondering if anyone had heard any bad news from Syracuse, UMBC, VCU, Virginia Tech, or Maryland-College Park. I realize that many interviewees have received invitations already, but I was wondering if anyone had contacted these schools and received news to think that the admissions process is basically over.

I posted this in the invite thread as well, but to those who got rejected from Loyola, did they include a form you can send in to have your application be considered for one of their master's programs? What are your thoughts on that as an option if you don't get into any of the programs you wanted to?

I also got one of these forms with my rejection... 🙁 I sent it in as a back-up option. It's not really what I was planning, but I figure it can't hurt to apply!

U of Kentucky finally arrived! It's funny, I'm taking this extremely well, probably because I have three interviews coming up and I knew UKY was a no-go anyway. If/when I get letters from the programs where I have interviews, I will be sobbing harder than a nine-year-old pilgrim widow.

I thought that I would type up the letter for your enjoyment. It was very nice, actually.

Dear Applicant,

As in years past, we have received hundreds of applications from strong candidates like you for admission to our doctoral training programs in clinical psychology. Because of the small numbers of openings in our program each year, in making selection decisions we must weigh many factors such as quality of academic credentials, extent of relevant life and professional experiences, and the match between an applicant's interests and the expertise of our faculty. I regret to inform you that we are unable to make you an offer for admission to our programs for the 2008-2009 academic year.

We do want to thank you for your interest in training at the University of Kentucky, and again, regret having to make this decision. We wish you the best in findig a graduate training program that fits your needs and talents.

I wonder if they said "strong candidate" to everyone or there were, like, two versions of the letter. Either way, it was nice of them to say it. 😉

I just got the exact same letter from Kentucky, word for word lol

Hello all - I have two major exams today and tomorrow so I can't update the board until tomorrow. Thanks for your patience!

It seems like when I applied to Kentucky (like 3 years ago), I had barely sent my application in and I received a rejection like a week later. If I remember correctly the letter basically said I sucked. So I would take this as a compliment-ish 🙂

Thanks for the info! Assuming they didn't say it to everyone, it's nice to know that a very highly-ranked program considers me a strong candidate. 😀

Every single rejection letter I have ever received (from my first round) called me a strong applicant. It's not unusual.

Just had to go and rain on my parade there, huh?

Nah, I'm kidding, I figured it was a standard form letter.

What a morbid thread. j/k

I received a rejection letter from The University of Indianapolis via snail mail today (2/9).

Good luck to everyone.

Dear Applicant,

We appreciate your interest in our program. This is to inform you that we have made our final selections. If you have not received an invitation for interview it is highly likely that your application will not be considered.

In an effort to become a "paper free environment" and save budgeted money, Graduate Admissions E-mail final decision notices on behalf of our program. That being the case it may take a few days. We apologize for the delay and understand your anticipation.

This year we received over 350 applications. As you can imagine, that means many applicants are disappointed. It is unfortunate that this is the case, but there seems to be no way to avoid such a situation.

We hope this will not deter you from pursuing your professional goals. Again, we thank you for your interest in our program and extend to you our very best wishes for your future.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Taylor, Ph.D.
Selection Committee Chair

Auburn U. rejection email. Now I could get one last interview to balance it out, huh???

At least the San Diego is nicely written. Most rejection letters come off pretty trite, uniform and cold to me (and some people have posted some simply ghastly ones I would be shocked to receive!) ...at least that one is a tad warmer... Maybe I'm reading too much into it but I feel like Dr. Taylor does appreciate the inherent humanness and academic strengths in many applicants who ultimately didn't get interviewed. (don't know him, but he even put his name to the letter rather than sending it out as, or, letting rejected applicants wait longer for, a more anonymous university notice)

I was even motivated to look up Dr. Taylor's interests just now based on this, lol... unfortunately there is zero overlap with mine 🙂

Well, I guess it's things like trite and rude rejection letters that gives me lessons for the future.

One day when I am a hotshot Director of Clinical Training, I will make sure to always be nice to the little people 🙂

Has anyone had an invite to the Berkeley visit weekend? It is coming up fast, but I haven't heard anything.

I received a snail mail rejection letter today from VA Consortium...after getting caught in a huge storm on the way home from classes without an umbrella 🙁 what a day!

Ohio State finally got around to updating my application status...rejected.

I got rejected from MSPP (Psy.D.) program... I sent them an e-mail asking what I could improve on and got an e-mail back saying that they couldn't tell me specifically.
I was a little surprised by that because I thought that schools would give you suggestions/feedback/criticism if you asked them.

I got a similar feedback last year from Rutgers.
The department secretary was nice enough to look at my file to check for any comments from my POI. Unfortunately, he had noted none.👎

Actually, everything I have ever read in regards to hearing back about a school, they never tell you what you did wrong because it would set a precedent which would result in EVERYONE asking.

received letter today from Seattle Pacific University....I thought this would be a safety school, but supposedly they had a ton of applications this year.

helloooooo,
I received a snail mail rejection from UMD-College Park today. oh well, their loss!
Also, in case you're interested, I have a friend who received a rejection letter from UMD-College Park's Counseling PhD program.

Mailed rejection from Indiana State Psy. D.

Whatever, I don't like college basketball or miles of sprawling, flat land anyway.

Rejected 2/14
one of my top choices...
Happy Valentine's Day to me.

snail mail...
hopefully not hearing from them means you will get an interview
also, I am talking about the Counseling Psych program (not Clinical)

I'm sorry. Did you get the mail on Friday? They're my top choice, I'm getting kind of bummed now.

Yes, I received the letter on Friday. I do live in southern Pennsylvania though, so the letter didn't have to go very far.

best of luck!

So yesterday I received a letter from my 1st choice school telling me that they weren't able to process my application for this academic year because they were still missing information. The letter also stated that they would be happy to review my application for the 2010 academic year if I forwarded them all of the missing information.
What I don't understand is the last time I spoke to them they told me that my application was complete.
I am so heartbroken. 🙁

I'm so sorry. I have nightmares about this kind of thing. I would call the program administrator and explain the situation, including that you were previously told the application was complete (in a friendly, confused, hurt tone, not accusatory). Volunteer to fax/express in whatever is missing. Explain that this program is one of your top choices (or top choice).

If this person can't or won't be helpful, I would be tempted to call the department head or head of clinical training and explain the situation.

They're not served by excluding an otherwise qualified candidate, but they're going to want to seem to be fair. You need to convince them that excluding you is what is unfair.

Good luck! Hope it works out.

I received a rejection letter from UCLA this week.

What is funny is that the letter says that it is not the "official" rejection letter. It says that I will be receiving the official rejection letter in a few weeks?????

I guess they were trying to soften the blow.

Oh well 🙁

I have two interviews, so I'm feeling pretty satisfied, but I haven't heard from Fordham, Stony Brook, or Columbia. I'm hearing from all of your guys that you are receiving rejection letters. I read the whole thing about Fordham, and am really disappointed; this was one of my first choices and I'm frankly surprised I didn't get an interview there, at the very least.

But what's all this about them sending out notification about rejection? C'mon, it's only fair to let us know you're not considering us...

THIS! THIS! THIS!

I have started to write a manifesto demanding changes to the admissions process several times, only to talk myself down. Would it kill the schools to reject us as soon as they know they're going to reject us? If they want to keep me around as a backup in case the first interviews don't work out, they could just say "You didn't make the first round of interviews, and are thus probably rejected, but we want to keep your name around for a while in case the first round people mess up." Would that be so hard?

i've heard that even if you interview - some schools don't actually tell you you've been rejected. can you imagine spending the time and money (in addition to JUST the application) to visit a school. emotional ramifications of that and waiting - never to hear whether you've been rejected post-interview?

UMD college park- Ph.D.
snail mail- mixed in with Valentine's Day cards

The letter did say that they recieved 650 apps- I guess that's to cusion the blow 🙄

They really made a jump from 281 application last year to 650 this year? I just don't really see that being the case. That must have been the psychology department as a whole or something. I'm still waiting for my rejection letter though. Not feeling to optimistic about it though. I thought since maybe my master's adviser was on my POI's dissertation committee that it might help me out quite a bit, but I guess not.

I called to check the status of my application and the secretary said they haven't sent out rejection letters yet but I am in fact rejected.

I'm hearing from EMU tonight so I may be back to post on this thread later. 😉

Called to check the status of my application and I have not been offered admission TWU which was my top choice.

This is an awful, awful, demoralizing process.

Has anyone heard back from Florida State University? I think that they may have met today, but just wondering if anyone has heard anything?

It is. I'm not sure it has to be this bad.

I'm very sorry you didn't get in.

I'm sorry to hear that Cara....

Thanks. I was really upset at first but now I'm okay because, hey, I have two other interviews coming up and they're at higher-ranked programs.

Also, they transferred my app to the Masters program so there's always that if I don't get into a PhD program.
