*~*~*~* Official TMDSAS Questions Thread 2024-2025 *~*~*~*~*

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am under the growing assumption I may have to reapply I was waitlisted in the match. I am in a unique position since Im currently active duty military stationed in texas(been here several year), and will be separating from the military this summer. If I move out of texas after the cycle am I still considered an in state applicant since I will have been a texas resident for over the minimum amount of time and active military stationed in the state? Or would I no longer be considered in state?
Don’t move if you’re doing this again. My friend got burned doing that. They’re crazy hard nosed about being in the state and will examine your application info, especially activities and stuff, with a microscope. Doesn’t matter if you’re born and bred there and went to school there or anything else. Be really careful not to lose the IS status if you want to go another round with the TMDSAS schools and their match game again. GL

hello! are you guys sending LOIs to your waitlisted schools? I’m thinking of sending one since the update email I received from them did not mention anything about not sending one but idk if it’s necessary or bears any weight on my WL position

Questions with the statistics course prerequisite for TMDSAS:

I was thankfully matched to one of the Texas schools, but I do not have a statistics credit. TMDSAS says I need one statistics course, but the school I was matched to accepts any type of math course (not necessarily statistics), which I do have.

In this case, should I take a statistics course before matriculation? Or is it ok to just stay with what I have? Can TMDSAS withdraw me from the school I was matched to for not fulfilling the stat course requirement? I'm asking since I already graduated and the only option for me to take stats course is to register for an online class.

Ask the school that accepted you directly, if your math course fulfills their prerequisites.
If they say yes, you are golden

Could you explain a little bit more about how you went about this? Was it a counselor at a medical school in Texas or undergrad advisor?
This was an admissions person at an actual medical school. They held a reapplication workshop which I attended. The person then said that we could email them if we had specific questions. I emailed them and HUGE props to this person they told me what to fix with my app. I listened and got in the next time I applied!

Quick question: is accepting an offer to enroll a binding decision? Just a tad bit confused and don't want to make any uninformed decisions🙂

if you are a Texan your offer probably came on Match Day. You can accept it because right now it’s your only school.

If you are OOS, you can still accept a TX offer and hold onto that and any AMCAS offers until April while you decide and narrow down your schools

Dumb question: if we have to accept offers by the end of april (i think that’s true for AMCAS and TMDSAS), then how is there supposedly so much waitlist movement after that time? also, what if i accept an offer by april 30 but then get off a waitlist later...?

After April 30th applicants narrow down to one acceptance but you can still remain on waitlists. There's a lot of WL movement at this point since the people holding multiple acceptances now commit to one so many schools reach into the WL to fill their class. If you get off of the waitlist anywhere (in Texas) you have to decide by May 15 I believe, or however long the school gives you to decide. After May 15 schools cannot extend an offer to Texas applicants holding another seat (quoting from TMDSAS website below)

If you accept an offer before April 30 you can remain on your waitlists at schools you would prefer until May 15 as far as I can tell.

the waitlist movement after 30th is primarily based on people holding many admissions narrowing down to 1 while schools who might have admitted conservatively not having enough left after people have withdrawn.

I would say many openings in Texas schools are primarily attributable to OOS students narrowing down to 1 in Texas or going elsewhere outside of Texas as well Texas residents choosing an OOS school (they can keep as many as they want outside of Texas until April 30th too). Since Texas restricts the OOS admissions and will not have too many admitted to account for yield, they have to fill those seats with OOS or IS.

Following up on this response, I was just WL'd for an OOS school in which they state most of the movement off the WL would occur in May-June. Would it be possible for me to withdraw my acceptance to the school I'm currently matched with to go OOS?

You can accept any waitlist offers and withdraw from an acceptance before commit to enroll.

Does anyone have any recommendations for someone who is familiar with the TMDSAS to help read, revise, and edit common essays and secondaries? Someone you worked with in past cycles, someone on here who is open to helping others, paid consulting type services, medical students who have businesses helping review essays etc.

It's expensive but I'd recommend shemassian. Most people on here will not recommend paid services at all. SDN not usually a big fan of paid services.

Hey! Send me a Dm I'll help you 🙂

Hi all,

I’m an OOS applicant to TMDSAS and currently facing a difficult decision. I’d really appreciate any insight or advice from those who’ve been in similar situations.

Here’s the situation:

  • I’ve been accepted to Texas Tech El Paso.
  • I’m currently waitlisted at McGovern, Baylor, UTSW, UTRGV, Texas Tech Lubbock, and Sam Houston (DO).
  • I graduated from the University of Michigan with a 3.93 GPA and scored a 522 MCAT.
  • I’m currently working at the school that is my top choice (moved her to do my gap year and love the area/school/people), and I’ve received some informal intel from admissions suggesting I’m near the top of the OOS waitlist. That said, I understand there are very few OOS spots.
Here’s my dilemma with the April 30th deadline looming (Medical applicants with multiple offers must decide which program to attend and withdraw from other schools):

  • If I accept El Paso, I need to withdraw from all waitlists.
  • If I decline El Paso, I can stay on the waitlists but risk not getting in anywhere this cycle.
I’m predicting/hoping for significant waitlist movement around April 30th (e.g., an OOS admit from top choice school turning them down might open a spot for me), but obviously that’s not guaranteed.

My concerns about rejecting El Paso:

  • It means potentially not matriculating this cycle, pushing med school and residency back another year.
  • There’s a stigma around reapplying after turning down an acceptance, though I wonder if being in-state next cycle and having strong stats might mitigate that.
To be 100% honest, cost was a major reason I applied to Texas schools, but I’m not sure I’ll remain in Texas for residency. I’m aiming to match at strong programs (especially up north), and I’m not confident that El Paso historically matches well in those regions. I know it may sound strategic or even "gaming the system," but I’m just trying to be transparent and make the best decision I can with the information I have.

So, I’d love to hear:

  • Have others been in a similar bind? What did you do?
  • Does rejecting an MD acceptance as a reapplicant really tank your chances the next cycle—even with strong stats and a move to in-state status?
  • Would it be foolish to risk it all for a better waitlist offer that might never come?
Thanks for reading, and for any guidance you’re willing to share.

Most of the Texas schools don’t require you to use the CYMS tool. (That’s AMCAS’s tool)
You only need to use CTE if you have more than one offer.
Do you? Or at this point one?

Choosing PTE allows you to remain on WLs
An OOS applicant with an acceptance can remain on WLs at the Texas schools for longer- IS applicants with one TX acceptance can only be invited to move up to a WL school until May 15.

So, it’s not over till it’s over.
Don’t hit CTE, just PTE, and wait.
El Paso is a city of over a million and there are good things going on there
Don’t go through this process again

Hey y’all! are we allowed to hold one tmdsas school and one amcas school after april 30th, or do we have to pick just one overall? i’m unsure if i’ll have financial aid info from both schools by then and want to factor that into my decision

Yes you can hold one of each for now. Do both schools show up on your CYMS tool?
They might if you have acceptances at both, even though TMDSAS schools are not on AMCAS.
Read your acceptance offer letter from the AMCAS school carefully to see if there is a commitment date . At this point (after Match Day) you have only 1 Texas school. You might have to choose on the basis of other factors if there is no FA information from the AMCAS school in the next 2-3 weeks.

oh okay thank you! it’s not on there, so i’m good

Hey guys, I’ve read the past posts on this thread, but just wanted to clarify my understanding, so my apologies for any redundancy.

For some context, I matched on match day to my third choice med school which I am really grateful for. This left my top two schools to WL me. Hopefully WL movement will start soon, but do I essentially have one month (until May 15th) to possibly move off the WL at this point? And then, say that if I don’t get off the WL by then, will I no longer be considered as an active applicant all together at those WL schools? And finally, should I know exactly which school I am going to by May 15th (whether it’s one of the WL schools or the one I am already accepted to)?

Because I know that people generally say WL movement occurs between May-June, so is that timeline geared more towards OOS ppl and ppl who didn’t have any TMDSAS acceptance on match day?

Personally, I would like to remain on the WL for my top 2 schools as long as possible, since they are way closer to home and I prefer to stay closer to my family as compared to the school that I matched to which is like a 10 hour drive from me. I really just want to make sure I got the facts straight, so I can explain to my family what to expect as well (cause I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes high that I can get off the WL in June/July all the way up until orientation if that’s not the case).

That is correct. Past May 15th, TMDSAS schools may only make WL offers to students who do not already have a TMDSAS A, so you will know for sure (unless you get an OOS offer) where you will be attending medical school after May 15th.

You have it right, @amazingday
One more thing, let’s say one of your schools offers to bring you in from the WL on May 14.
You can accept the offer, or stick with your current school. The choice is up to you.
You will probably have a few days after their offer to decide.

@wysdoc I am curious about how TMDSAS views someone that has no admissions in Texas with 2-3 waitlists but has one in AMCAS for their May 15th timeline. Will someone give you this info from tmdsas?

Thanks for the responses and clarifying that! Kinda sucks to be pulled from the WL of my higher ranked schools as an applicant all together by May 15th if no offer comes by then, since I would have liked to tease the possibility of being closer to home. But I also understand the system works this way for a reason. At the end of the day, may we all end up at the school that is best for us!

If they have no Texas admissions, and have not marked "Commit to enroll" at their OOS school by May 15th it should be possible to stay on those Texas WLs a little longer.
I think the OOS school would have a Commit deadline around that time, and once you mark "CTE" you are supposed to drop all your WLs.

I haven't seen an exact date, but what is the exact date all transcripts should be in for EY 2025?
Check the onboarding instructions at the school you will attend. If you are still finishing up senior year, you can wait until the transcript is final and shows you have earned your BS or BA.

I have a non-profit that I'm actively working on to build a mentoring network, connecting college and high school students to people working in medicine and tech.

I'm a programmer and started working on this after interviewing to do the same thing at a medical school, but I wasn't hired. Their platform is also very outdated with no active users - figured why not make it myself?

I am excited to work on this, but it has no income. I did all the official filings, but I don't know if I should check yes for "Do you have a Texas business?" on the residency portion. Should I check it?
That is just one of the questions you will be answering to determine whether you qualify as a Texas resident, by the criteria TMDSAS and the Texas medical school members have established.
You don't have to answer "yes" to every single one of these residency section questions to be adjudged a Texas resident.

You are asking a lot of "what should I write?" questions and the 2026 app does not open until May 1, 2025. Be sure you wait until then to work on the 2026 application.
And honestly, write your own essays based on your experiences and insights, please don't crowdsource them.

I'm not sure how you are making this assumption. I have asked two questions about a secondary's character limits and not once asked anyone what I should write.

This is probably the last thing required from you by TMDSAS
They might send you a survey (if they haven't already done so) about what you think could be improved about the TMDSAS application..
