I just checked my e-mail and had the notorious "call Dr. Resnik" message. I called and they confirmed that I had been accepted. I interviewed 2-14 and was placed into the acceptable pool post-interview. I'm so happy to know I get to stay in CA and had to share the good news.

Name of thread changed at the request of California.

hey KEITH!!!! yay for you! i look forward to getting to know you next year in san diego!

btw, if you want to go to the 2nd-visit weekend, rvsp deadline is friday (the 19th), it's on the 27th (not sure if you got the e-mail yet)

Hey man, ur the 1st person I know who interviewed in feb and got in. Congrats!!!

Hey keith. Congratulations.

I was wondering if you did anything to pull yourself off the waitlist. Did you write a letter of intent or send additional letters of recs?

I didn't write a letter of intent or any other type of letter. The last contact I had with the school was on my interview day. I never even write thank you notes post-interview because the admissions staff are busy enough. Thanks for the congrats and good luck to all!

congrats Keith! That's SUPER news! Does this mean that they are already taking from the alternate list? or does it mean that the a-pool is not really an alternate list!?!?! I'm somewhat confuse-d.

Before I interviewed I had heard that they were placing most applicants in the acceptable pool this year as to not miss good candidates due to the AMCAS screw up. The school told me that most of the first year class would come from the acceptable pool. Basically, post-interview a few get outright accepted and a few rejected, however, the majority are placed in the acceptable pool in a ranked order. As the app cycle progresses, they continually accept from the AP.

Thanks Keith! That's encouraging. I have been sooo tired of applying/writing letters/trying to make people like me that I didn't follow up much. Kinda discouraged with the interview day.. I had a really bad tour. But I really loved UCSD the school itself, and was bummed about the waitlist, because it just seemed so formidable. Who wouldn't want SD? Congrats to you!

hawkeyes did they actually waitlist you or just stick you in the apool? When I called the admin, they said the a-pool was basically a waitlist.

hero- my pathetic letter says that "you have been placed in our Acceptable Pool. This pool is similar to an alternate list." Any thoughts? What about you? Perhaps they don't use the word waitlist, outright... seems like different schools have different lingo.

hawkeyes: i got the same pathetic letter

I think if we are still in the a-pool after May 15th, things will start looking pretty bad. As of now, we still have a good chance of getting pulled from the a-pool after UCSD has finished and reviewed the late interviews w/ the adcom.

I think a big batch of acceptances will come the 23rd. I will be checking my email every 5 minutes

First, I would like to congratulate Keith and others on their acceptance to UCSD-SOM. A great accomplishment! Second, I interviewed towards the end of February, and I still have not heard a single decision. Seven weeks have now passed! I'm so worried. I called the Admissons Office on Monday, April 15, 2002, and Yvonne told me a decision still has not made. She also mentioned I call back the following Tuesday (April 23, 2002).

Does anyone have any advice for me? Is April 23rd really D-day? Let me know. It seems like I've done everything. I brought an update letter the day of my interview, I sent *thank you* letters to my interviewers, and I just sent an *intent* letter last week. I did this all because I love UCSD-SOM and I want to be classmates with individuals like Keith and Matthew---people who are really genuine and prove the stereotype of *hard-core* UCSD-SOM students to be completely false.

california,
i don't know what to make of 7 wks and still no decision. UCSD is usually really quick to notify applicants post interview. (2-4 wks, i was placed into the a-pool w/i 3 wks.) you are the only person i've heard of who has gone past 4 wks. i don't know if 4-23 is significant. there are far too many variables to speculate but hope the extra delay turns out to be a positive thing.

yvonne confirmed for me yesterday that the committee will be meeting on monday the 22nd, and again 2 weeks later. i interviewed on april 1 and my file will not be reviewed until the meeting in 2 weeks. i would imagine that people who interviewed in feb/early march will have their fate decided on monday and can call for the results on tuesday. good luck everyone!!

I'm in the same boat as california. I interviewed back in mid-January, and every time I call, they keep telling me I'm "tentatively" scheduled to be reviewed "next week" or "next month". The latest today, though, is that Monday night is when I'm next scheduled.

If it finally happens, it will have been 13 weeks from interview to evaluation. I'm not optimistic.

Anyone else suffering a long gap between interview and any decision? I'm not talking about being put in the acceptable pool; I'm talking about NO contact whatsoever.

hey california, we're rooting for you!!

Matthew - Thanks for the support. I've been pretty lucky in this process so far, which makes me believe I have a good chance of being your classmate at UCSD-SOM.

Dark Sandbars - Don't be so down. I think the reason you haven't been reviewed yet is because your interviewers did not turn in their evaluations quickly, which probably was why my application was delayed as well. I don't think you should look at the delay as either a bad or good sign. You're in the same boat as someone who interviewed a month ago. Good luck, buddy!

By the way, for all those in the same position as Dark Sandbars and I, there is one SDN member who replied to a forum I started about a month ago. He told me there was a four month gap from his interview to his decision letter in which he heard absolutely nothing. He was accepted. So, an acceptance is still a real possibility.

Well I've just hit the 9 week mark without getting a decision from them yet. It really doesn't seem right for them to be so inconsistent about when people get to go to committee, especially since they are rolling and what's left of the acceptances are probably filling up fast. I hope the delay isn't because of some post-interview, pre-committee screening against mediocre applicants or something. Hopefully we'll all have the legendary email on Tuesday.

Jefe, 9 weeks after your interview and you still didn't hear from them? Not even an apool letter? In my interview, I met a few applicants whose 2ndary application was messed up by UCSD. Eventually they fixed it when the applicants called in. What did they say when you called them?

Does anyone have insight on why some of us here on SDN have had to wait so long post-interview for a final decision? Also, does anyone really know for *sure* that April 22, 2002, is the day that those who interviewed in February/March should here a final decision? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

My best friend got in yesterday as well and I was the first person she called. You guys that can get into a kick a$$ school like UCSD are my heroes. I wish I had the foresight to be a better student as an undergrad, now I'll be in the east coast for med school but it'll still be awesome.

medicine2006, do you know when she interviewed?

uugh... what are they DOING with our applications? :( Does anything happen when we get put in the a-pool? Is that pretty much a stagnant pool till after 5/15? It seems like people (Keith) get off it ... actually accepted... but why is that? (other than Keith must be super studly)

i think they're ranking the apool members and lower the cutoff to accept more as they are finishing up interviews IMO. The left overs will be sent a rejection or waitlist letter.

No I haven't even been put in the acceptable pool. No contact whatsoever since the interview. When I called them, they said my application hasn't gone to committee and to call back in a few weeks.

That's messed up! It totally sounds like something USC would do, but not UCSD... Something must have gone wrong w/ ur app.. perhaps the person that interviewed you is a lazy punk and didn't turn in ur evaluation yet? If i was in ur shoes, i'd write to Dr. Resnik.. Good luck bro..

Congratulations Keith!

Way to go!!!

I also got accepted at UCSD, so I am looking forward to meeting you! Are you going to the Welcome-back day?

Chnobli

I'll see you there.

Has anyone called to find their ranking? From what I understand at interview day, they don't know/release the rankings before May 15. But it sounds like they are already ranking quite a bit if some got out of the a-pool. Has anyone ventured this yet?!? I want to call, but I'm scared...

I think everyone is placed into the a-pool in a ranked order, however, I don't know if they'll tell you what position you hold.

I remember when I called, one of the first thing they asked me was my AMCAS ID. I think they check it first to see where you stand. If you get in, they'll tell u right away. If not, they'll give u the standard answer they tell everyone -- which is to wait some more.

I guess today is the day many post-interview decisions will be made, at least according to information in this thread. I am VERY nervous since it has now been eight weeks since the day of my interview and still no word. I really hope I get an acceptance. UCSD-SOM is my first choice. I think I have a good chance but this process is so RANDOM!

Looking over the information on this thread as well as others, I think I have kind of figured out what is/has been going on. I believe the Admissions Committee met two weeks ago in order to grant acceptances to those in the "Acceptable Pool." I think this explains why people who were put in the "Acceptable Pool" many months ago as well as only a few weeks ago received acceptances. I think today the Admissions Committee is meeting to offer more acceptances. However, I think this group of people will be those who have not heard ANYTHING post-interview (i.e., those who interviewed towards the end of February and early March). The Committee, as I understand it, will meet in another two weeks at which point more offers of acceptance will be given. I think this group will include those in the "Acceptable Pool" and interviewees who interviewed in March/April.

Basically, I think today no decisions will be made on those in the "Acceptable Pool" since that was done two weeks ago and will be done two weeks from today. The people whose fate will be decided today are those who interviewed in late February or early March. (I know I might seem like I'm full of sh**, but I've been pretty successful in my analysis of others schools' admissions policies, especially Northwestern University Medical School.) I hope my informations helps someone who is worrying about UCSD-SOM like me...

sounds good to me, california -- i'm sure you will hear soon :)

also, i wanted to wish every1 going to the 2nd look weekend a lot of fun! -- i have decided to miss it for a variety of reasons; but anyways, i'll meet every1 in august

Hmm but keith who interviewed in Feb and Chnobli got their acceptances Wed, 4/17. (and darkmatter's friend) Chnobli was put in the a-pool, from what I can tell, on Friday 4/12 but still got in on 4/17.

They met again today, Monday 4/22. I fear the processes is a lot more complicated...

If I call them tomorrow and don't get a final decision, I think I'm going to have an aneurysm.

ouch. don't have an aneurysm.
that's not good.
it's not worth it.

I checked my e-mail this morning (8:00 am, April 23, 2002) in the remote hope I would receive a message from UCSD-SOM asking me to call the Office of Admissions (i.e., an acceptance). Since I have not received an e-mail of this sort yet, I expect the worse. I do not even have the guts to call Yvonne and ask her if a decision has been made. I got to work up the courage!
