Official UCSD Countdown Thread, former "I'm in, UCSD,.."

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, I finally got the nerve to call the Admissions Office. I just couldn't take the idea of not knowing ANYMORE. Unfortunately, I don't have good news to report. I was placed in the ignominous "Acceptable Pool." I guess my dream of attending UCSD-SOM is over. I am really depressed now...I thought it would work out for me in San Diego.

Good luck to everyone else who is still waiting! I wish you the best. I was really hoping I would be the classmate of some of those who have posted here.

(By the way, I am very doubtful I will be pulled from the "Acceptable Pool," since it is getting pretty close to the end of the Admissions Process. I am under the impression that UCSD-SOM has already pulled off many, if not all, the students it wanted from the "Acceptable Pool."

I think your dismay is premature. when i interviewed there many people i talked to had gotten accepted from the acceptable   in the summer. one of them even organized a second second-look weekend for people who hadn't been accepted in time to attend the first--there were that many late acceptees. so, no need to wallow in the despair of dashed dreams just yet...

california, at least you were reviewed! I was not so lucky, and when I called, I was told that the next time I'll be reviewed is May 6. At that point, I'll probably be put into the "acceptable pool". Apparently, all the more competitive applicants were reviewed more quickly.

Man, and I interviewed on January 10, too. My situation is not uncommon, I was told.

I am sorry to complain and vent. You are all right. I should be grateful that my application was reviewed and, despite being placed in the "Acceptable Pool," I should be optimistic about my chances. In fact, this thread is evidence that many who are in the "Acceptable Pool" have a chance to be accepted!

Dark Sandbars, hang in there. Like my last post to you, you still have a chance! (I don't know why I'm always more optimistic about the situation of others. I guess despite all of my good luck in the medical school aplication process I'm a little worried it is going to run out for me!)

I was wondering if anyone else called the Admissions Office today? If so, did they review your application? Were you accepted? Any information would be very helpful at this point.

Hey California, I called them up today too. Just to repeat, I interviewed in Feb and was placed in the apool in March. When asked about my application, the lady said that it is still in the a-pool. When I asked when they were going to review the applicants, they said that they would do it 'periodically.'

I called this morning. The lady I spoke to said that I had been reviewed, but that "a final decision had not been made." I was a bit confused about what that meant... I just checked my email..and there it was - I'm in!! I interviewed 4/9 (I was taken of "hold for interview"). I can't believe they made the decision so fast!! I'm really excited, and I'm definitely going to second look this saturday. I'm looking forward to meeting some of you. Good luck to those still waiting. :)

Oh, I just realized that since I just was accepted, I'm obviously not going to get the "official" invitation to second look. Does anyone know what the dress code is, because I don't want to show up wearing the wrong thing :) .
Thanks.

totally casual (jeans or shorts), interviews are over. the lunch is pizza and dinner is a BBQ out on the lawn area.

damn, an interview on 4/9 and an acceptance on 4/23? dr. happy is killing my confidence over here. i interviewed 4/1 and was told that i would not be reviewed until 5/6. there can't be that many immediate acceptances still left to be had. i'll keep my fingers crossed.

congrats dr. happy!! put in a good word for me when you are at the 2nd look weekend

2 days after i started this post i was accepted to ucsf, which has always been my dream school for a variety of reasons. i just got the "big envelope" from ucsf today. with that said, I WITHDREW MY ACCEPTANCE TO UCSD today. (telephone call to Yvonne followed by an e-mail) i hope this helps one of my fellow SDNers get in soon. good luck to you guys still in limbo w/ ucsd!!

i'll call yvonne right now and tell her that i'll take your spot. thanks keith

Thanks for the info Keith and congratulations on the SF acceptance. It's my dream school too, but alas, being on "high priority," I have to wait :) .

Dr. Happy, congratulations! I am happy for you. I wish I could join the ranks of the accepted, but I just don't know. I guess I'm worried I will be waiting all summer long for an acceptance but never receive one. I don't want to spend my last summer before medical school in this manner. Everyone, keep your fingers crossed for me!

Don't worry California. Come May, many people will decline their acceptance from UCSD. Take Keith for example. By then, there will be numerous positions open for waitlist people, or people waiting to hear a decision. This is not like Harvard or Stanford where there is barely any movement on the waitlist.

Congratulations (PAD)

lol, cambrian you need to shake your ucsd-inferiority complex :)

and btw, the stanford waitlist gets a lot of movement too -- mostly people passing it for ucsf and ucla (not to say that people don't go the opposite way)

california, i know what you mean, i will be waiting all summer on a waitlist. just keep your fingers crossed :)

As always, thanks for the support. Matthew, I hope things work out for you at UCLA. Everyone else, I wish you the best!

Congratulations Dr Happy!!!! (I PMed you)

I called today too and they told me I still haven't been sent to committee :( . Does anyone know how many more committee meetings there are? They said try again 5/7, but I wonder if I could be put off even longer than that. I'm starting to wonder if one of my interviewers lost his evaluation sheet or something and that's why they won't review me. Oh well, here's to two more weeks of waiting  .

california,
is it just me or weren't you also accepted to northwestern? if so, you have an outstanding school to go to if you don't hear from ucsd. what's wrong with the big NW?

listen, let me tell u a story I had 4 friends last year who were dying to get into SD, and they were placed on that damn list...

one got of in June, one in July and 2 in august...I think one of them even got off, 1 week before school started!!!

the most important thing...and I repeat, is to NOT show that you have lost interest in the school...I highly recommend sending out a letter of intent

and bro, u got into northwestern...I was dying to go to northwestern!?

don't put down ur accomplishments....nu was a great school...besides...u want ur first choice there is nothing wrong with that, but I highly reocmmend writing a letter of intent....that is a must..and always ALWAYS show ur interest for the school...I have no doubt u will get in :p

I luvs this thread! California, I agree with previous posters that your despair is a little premature. I heard/read somewhere that 1/2 of those interviewed *eventually* get in. If it really is your dreamschool, don't give up, and write that one and only love letter of intent (if accepted, I will release all acceptances and matriculate). You're def an outstanding candidate, esp if you got in to NUMS :D .. that was my favorite school besides G'town upon interviewing. Just remember what it was like to be applying. Or taking the MCAT. If you are anything like me and most premeds, weren't you fretting over not getting in ANYWHWERE? And now, you are in the a-pool of your dream school and have as a backup one of the most coveted schools around! You're looking fine, buddy, ... remember that. This thread should be renamed the UCSD countdown support network. I, myself, am sadly still also in a-pool.

Milhouse Vanhouten, WatchaMaCallit, Hawkeyes, & All Others Who Have Posted In This Thread:

You guys are awesome. Thank you SO MUCH for your support. I appreciate it very much. I won't fret too much since I have Northwestern, which is a good school, as a backup. I guess I have to keep hope alive and have some perspective. I will also remember to write a letter of intent to UCSD!

Also, thanks for not jumping on me and reminding me of all the MORE important things in life and all that is going on in the world. I realize I'm very luck to be able to go to medical school this year, and more importantly, to be alive. I keep thinking of all those people who have been killed over the last couple months in the Middle East and the events that took place in New York City almost nine months ago. Everyone in SDN should be grateful.

Well, anyway, thank you! (Sorry to digress a little about tragic events.) You guys are great and I wish you the VERY, VERY best. Good luck to you in all of your pursuits!

Hey California (and others who are waiting),
I just want to remind you all that, though it seems like this application process has been going on FOREVER, the end is still very far off. When I was placed "on hold for interview" at UCSD in early October, I thought, no way am I going to get in. If you would have told me then, that I would be accepted down the road, I never would have believed it. So, my example alone shows there IS hope!!!
Also, at my UCSD interview, my tour guide said that she was placed in the a-pool, and UCSD told her that she was in the bottom half with LITTLE OR NO chance of getting in. She wrote them a very nice letter, explaining why she wanted to go there, and lo and behold, she was accepted two weeks later!!! Again, proving that as long as you don't have a rejection letter in your hands, you still stand a VERY good chance.
I hope that helps..Good luck everyone - I'm rooting for you!!
-Dr. Happy

Hurray! The countdown begins!

Hey everyone,

I too am swimming around in UCSD's Acceptable Pool. Good Luck to everyone! On that note, has anyone actually been told their standing within the pool? If so, who did you talk to? I'm wondering if I should even call the admissions office regarding that info.
Thanks

i was told during my interview that they wouldn't give an estimate of your waitlist position until the 1st of august. strap yourself in for the long haul...

I'm so mad I'm nauseated. I sent my love letter to UCSD last week by PRIORITY mail. One would think that this would actually work! So I tried to track it's delivery today and was told that they tried to deliver the mail, but instead of delivering it, the postman decided that it was unsafe (becuase it IS up to his discretion) to deliver and so sent it back to the post office and left a notice for the office of admissions. Like they will really go pick it up at the post office! I called the admissions office and they said that they had no such notice! The campus system is so complicated that all mail goes to some primary sorter that then distributes the mail to different departments! And so I can't get my letter back to resend and I can't just have them resend. Chalk another up to the US Post office! :(
Oh, you all may be more interested in this than my rantings: the woman I talked to told me that the a-pool wouldn't be ranked until the end of the month.

Sorry to hear about your postal mishap hawkeyes! :(

By the way, do you know the name of the person you talked to today? I called them sometime last month, and was told to call back in June because they wouldn't have the waitlist rankings until then. So if they have the rankings at the end of this month, do you think we should call in May to find out where we stand?

Swimming around in this pool is making me tired! Anyone else feel the same way????

I just wanted to post and say-UCSD has given me 4 ulcers thus far. One for every Monday that goes by and they tell me "I'm tentatively scheduled to go to committee tonight".... and no email from Dr. Resnik. That would make it 8 weeks I've been waiting (after initally waiting 3 weeks to first call...) So, 11 weeks in total, and not a single decision.

UCSD has been my first choice since the beginning of this whole process, but after the way they're handling this process, it makes me wonder how they handle their students. ??

Anyways, I commisserate with everybody still playing the waiting game. And Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted.

Hi Hawkeyes,

If I would be you, I would fax your letter, and then mail it with regular snail mail. That way the UCSD admissions office will have your letter sooner (instantly via fax) which may make a difference!

Good luck to you and all the others! I will keep my fingers crossed!

Hi everyone... thanks for commiserating with me. After calling the USPostal service 4 times, I decided to just rewrite my letter, send it and apologize if there was a duplicate received again later on. I now realize that they may never have gotten my thank you letters either... I just didn't have them certified so I could track them. Morale: certify your mail! I was really really bummed becuase I timed it so that it would get there just before the big decisions (I had heard) were made on Monday, and now I know that it never got there at all! When I went to the post office to AGAIN send my letter priority, the woman helping me was absolutely agast at my situation and how *****ic it was that it didn't get delivered. At least she felt my pain, and I felt somewhat better. She said that she could also probably get my money back and would call them in La Jolla to have them deliver the letter right away. Too late, though.. I already wrote an exact same letter. Not SD's fault at all, but I did have some concern re: how they treat students. Those I came across during interview didn't seem particularly happy to be there. But I really didn't get to talk to ANY except the tour guides. That's why I woudl have liked to go to the second look becuase it would maybe be a BETTER look. But alas.. I'm not invited! :( :( It took me a while to shake my bad interview day and now, today, when I called (sorry, don't know her name... we were doubly anonymous), when she understood what my problem was, empathized, but told me that it needs to get sorted through campus mail and all that... it's a big campus. Easy to fall through the cracks, it seems. Not to compare, but I'm waitlisted at Columbia where I probably don't have a chance in million, but I received a letter from Dr. Frantz in response to my followup letter ONE week and ONE day from the time I sent mine. At least they treat you gentleman-like, you know?
Y'know.. I think I'm just sad right now. I don't mean to sound so discouraging. UCSD is a great school in a great locale all around and I would be very happy  to get in there. Congrats to all of you who've been sucessful! Tell us about the 2nd look ok? :)

my friend who interviewed april 1 just got accepted yesterday. good luck to those still waiting to hear.

Wow, you guys are really determined to get in to UCSD. With this determination, I'm sure UCSD will accept you. Just send in your letter of intent telling them UCSD is your first choice.
Good luck to all. Hope to see you guys at UCSD in August.

One spot will open up at UCSD, I bit the bullet today and chose DUKE over UCSD, Stanford, Northwestern and Yale. It was a tough choice as I am a San Diego native, but I decided to expand my horizons and go to DUKE. I hope one of you get the available spot. Good luck :p

god bless ya...

i keep hearing about everyone getting in this week. makes me scared that there will be very few outright acceptances when i get to committee in a couple of weeks.

anybody else want to go ahead and tell ucsd to f-off?

I sent UCSD the love letters(love letters, hehe) on the first week of April. I sent the letters to the dean, to Dr. Resnik, and to the person whose name appeared on the bottom of my a-pool letter. Even with that, my file is still "on hold for further review."

"Files are reviewed periodically" and that will be the next time my file will be reviewed.

My stats 3.7 gpa UCLA, MCAT 38.

Just an update:

UCSD will not be making any acceptances before May 15th (so I guess in the next Committee meeting scheduled for May 6th, everyone will be placed in acceptable pool?).

They expect to form the waitlist at the beginning of June. It is ranked, but they will not tell you your position. However, they can give you their best guess of a chance of an acceptance.

Anyone know how many people total have been accepted thus far?

Out of curiosity, I was wondering if anyone (besides me) was placed in the "Acceptable Pool" this week (week of April 22, 2002)? I have seen quite a few people receive acceptances (particularly, those who interviewed in early April), but what about placement in the "Acceptable Pool!" Oh, and one more question, did anyone who was previously placed in the "Acceptable Pool" receive an acceptance this week?

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to get an opinion, how much do you guys think the "letters of intent" really matter? For example, if I'm in the a-pool at UCSD, but it's not necessarily my first choice (more like 3-4, but I still like the school) should I still write a letter to them. I am just really confused, cause I am still waiting post-interview from my first 2-3 choices...
Also, do you guys remember how UCSD's residency match list looked compared to other UCs. I am so confused about the plan of action w/waitlists and the a-pool deal...it's really nerve wrecking. Please share your opinion about UCSD compared to other UCs...thanks

I can only share my experience. I've shown my letter to 4 people for their opinion before I sent it and they all said it was very well written and honest. I don't know anyone who's letter of intent made a difference in UCSD(if you are our there, please let us know!) However, I do know several people who were pulled from the a-pool and did not send the letters of intent

I finally received me official letter, which stated I was placed in the "Acceptable Pool." I was kind of hoping the woman I spoke to in the Admissions Office was mistaken and I really was accepted. No such luck!

Well, anyway, good luck to all! I hope some of us are pulled from the "Acceptable Pool" over the next few weeks. Please post if your hear anything or receive an actual letter.

This is an OFFICIAL THREAD and UCSD is a great school. Let's see some action here. Also, if you have morsels of information, please share. I was recently placed in the Acceptable Pool and, honestly, I'm so, so stressed out. I hope some movement occurs over the next few weeks.

during the welcome day I spoke with a student who worked closely with the admissions office. Appearantly UCSD interviewed a lot more people this year. also, before April 1, they had only accepted about 120 people. As of last saturday (4/27) they accepted an additional 120 people, bringing the total to 240 (twice the class). The student I spoke with said that the admissions office was only going to give out about 20 more acceptances. After that, everyone will have to wait till the class gets under 122 b/f anyone will be pulled off the acceptable pool or waitlist.

They accepted pple last saturday 4/27, how come no one's posted that they got accepted

It's already Wednesday...

They didn't accept the 120 people on saturday. They were accepted between 4/1-4/27. I'm sure you remember that a lot of people were either given immediate acceptances or pulled off the a-pool during the last few weeks.

Hi everyone,

I am one of the accepted students at UCSD, and I did send a letter indicating that UCSD was my first choice.

If UCSD is your first choice, I would recommend that you tell them by writting a letter, it surely can only help!

Good luck to you all!

this is a direct quote from the admissions office:

"It is true that the class is full and we will have the wait list made up by the end of the month. May 15th will bring some changes and people would hear at that time."

i was also told that they haven't decided on whether or not to give "hints" to waitlisted folks about their position on the waitlist and the liklihood of getting in. i was told to call around the first of june to try to check on my position. i think i'm being a bit premature, however, considering that my file won't go to committee until next monday.
