Official UCSD Countdown Thread, former "I'm in, UCSD,.."

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This information is from Mrs. Linda Whitson, director of admissions:

The waitlist letters are going to be sent out in today's mail, it is being sent to 200 people.

She told me that the waitlist is UNRANKED...??? I asked her twice to confirm... she said it's unranked. (I think it is ranked, but they just tell us that it isn't so that they don't have to give us any information in regards to our position on the waitlist...)

They expect that 30-40 students will be admitted off of the waitlist throughout the summer.

Mrs. Whitson is very nice... if you guys call the 858-534-3880 number and ask for her she can tell you if you're on the waitlist or not.

Goodluck... and please post any new information. Thanks

i emailed linda this morning as a preface to my call later this morning. surprisingly she got right back to me. here is an excerpt from her response:

"We are sending letters today to those selected for our summer waitlist. We won't know
until responses have been received how many will be in this group. At this time, it is impossible to know how many additional acceptances we will
offer, though historically it is 25-30. My best guess is that if we were to offer you an acceptance, it wouldn't be until late summer. You are encouraged to keep in contact with us as we go through the summer."

I will try to confirm from her again that the waitlist is unranked. any other pressing questions before i make my call?

858 534-3880 UCSD admissions, can get ms. whitson via this # as well.

858-534-1515 (ms. whitson's direct line)

I'll call as soon as i build up the nerve :X But yea i was told by a UCSD personell the waitlist would be unranked.

Just spoke with Linda and she told me I'm on the waitlist. She also confirmed that it's unranked and that out of the 200 letters being sent, they don't know how many people are going to want to stay on it, that's why she can't devulge any information on where we stand right now. She said to call back around the third week of June to get more definitive information on where we stand on the waitlist. Hope the rest of you hear good news today! :D

oh well...I guess it is unranked :) and I guess Hero was right... :D

best of luck to everyone getting the letters, I wish you all the very best

good luck :p

Is it just me or is UCSD putting everyone remainding from the apool on the waitlist? Those of you who found out you were on the bottom of the pool? Will you be getting a waitlist position as well? 200 just seems like a lot of people

So out of 400 people swimming in the acceptable pool, 200 are waitlisted? Do you guys know if that 400 in the acceptable pool also includes the individuals who were in the pool but have already been offered acceptances? If that's the case, than if they take 200 people from the remaning pool, than each person's chance is greater than 50% right? Any info?

Info on 2001-2002 first-year class for UCSD:
Applicants interviewed: 522
New Entrants: 121

-------------
240(?) were accepted mid April. Unknown more accepted throughout May.

By next week, 200 will be placed on the waitlist.

•••••i think they may have interviewed a little over 600 this year. if you remember the survey they passed out at the interview, it had a number in the top right corner. i was there the last week and our numbers went from around 605 to 615, so we figured they were probably interviewee numbers.

don't know if that's useful, but good luck to everyone. :) :)

Well, I called Linda this morning and she wouldn't tell me that I was on the waitlist or not. She asked for my AMCAS ID, put me on hold, then just told me that I would be receiving a letter....guess that means that I was probably one of those from the Acceptable Pool that didn't make it on to the waitlist.... Bummer!

SAMMMEYEAM and HERO:

Thanks for posting your info about Linda Whitson's response. It was very useful because apparently today was the best time to call them: next week they're having everything in the office re-carpeted, renovated, re-everything...so they wouldn't be able to answer questions, except through email.

Bummer!•••••CALIGURL: Don't lose heart! She may actually have meant it otherwise. I asked today, and she did the same thing with me, so I told her, "Oh, well, I guess I'm getting a rejection letter then, that's too bad." Then she replies, "No, actually, you're on the waitlist. You just need to tell us if you want to stay on the waitlist."

So maybe, she really meant that you're receiving the waitlist letter. She told me that while none of them will be in the office next week, she will be checking her email, so you can communicate through that.

Hope this helps. :)

Can someone please ask her the following question:

If the waitlist is UNRANKED, then how do they decide who to accept? Is it demographics and to balance the class?

For example, I know that NYU picks people from the waitlist in order to balance the class (i.e., add to its diversity) - e.g., lets say the class size consists of very few females, then they will accept more females from the waitlist... or lets say there are less California residents... etc etc.

???

So let me get this straight... ONLY 15% of the 200 people on the waitlist will be accepted?

...................15%....sigh... if i get
a waitlist notfication tomorrow, i guess it
doesn't mean much.

200 people will be mailed the waitlist letter, but not all of them will necessarily accept the position...

Maybe 150... maybe 100 ? You never know.

Heh, you shouldn't try to analyze your chances based on statistics... god knows this whole admissions process defies statistics...

200 people will get the waitlist letter, but there were 300 people in the acceptable pool. So that leaves room for about 100 of us to get cut this week. I was at the bottom, so I'll let you know what happens when I get my letter this week.

has anyone got the waitlist letters?

u'd think I would get the mail on Saturday, but noooooo

anybody got good news? hopefully I'm waitlisted :)

it pisses me off...cuz I tried calling Linda..and asked her if I'm on the waitlist...and she was like...we sent you a letter...so I was like..does that mean I was rejected and she said...I sent you a letter...

this is all I can say to Linda now...

thank you

•••••I asked her HOW in the world one can move up to get accepted, and she said 1) If you have any recent developments since you interviewed, like publications, etc. 2) There's really almost nothing you can do right now.

That screws me over because I don't think I've done anything substantial within the last couple of months -- I told her as much and she said taht I should just probably send in a letter of intent. Maybe those of you that do: this info might help.

I asked if I should give them an "I love you" letter each week and she laughed and said that it would probably work to my detriment if I did. Basically, one letter of intent is fine. The other thing is that she said I should call around the end of the month (of June) because they think they'll have a better idea of what our chances will be (w/ all those people withdrawing from the waitlist).

I just wanted to let you guys know that I got my letter in the mail yesterday. It said that they were no longer considering my application and were hoping that this would give me an opportunity to focus on other avenues of acceptance :(. So it looks like the bottom of the A-pool held true. Hope you guys have better luck.

Jefe, I'm really sorry about UCSD for you... Thank you for letting us know because it really helps us get a better understanding of where we stand.

I'm waitlisted at USC so it just shows you the consistency of the whole application processes. Maybe i'll get pulled from the waitlist and we'd be classmates *wishful thinking* :)

Has any one who has been moved onto the alternate list been told their actual position on that list?

I think someone said we'd know third week of June. when they get responses from people who accept a position on the waitlist.

Much to my surprise, I got a letter saying that "The UCSD School of Medicine is pleased to inform you that you have been selected as an alternate to the class entering in August 2002."

It was dated May 31, 2002, and I live in San Francisco.

I suppose it's better than being rejected, though the word "pleased" seems a bit out of place.

I hope this helps those of you trying to find out how long to wait for letters to arrive.

I got wailisted too!

oh well...guess it is better than a rejection...

hopefully I will see you guys come Fall...

... i got it, too.
guess UCSD decided to kill me slowly like what other schools did. Good luck to you guys, though. i am just a pessimistic dude.

btw, if you guys know any good job search web site, please share with me, thanks. i'm trying to find a one-year job around South SF Bay area.
(p.s. i already know about craigslist)

Another waitlist letter received here!!!
i'm sorry for you about UCSD, El Jefe. Hey, USC is a great school too. It's actually my second choice post-secondary (because my gf is going to dental school at USC), but they didn't bother to give me an interview.

Thanks for the support guys. UCSD was a letdown, but I'm over it. I am perfectly happy going to USC, but a little worried about the money since the financial aid package they worked out for me was $15000 short of what I'll need <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> . A UC would have been nice to chop off a few more years of debt.

does anyone know if they're actually having a second second look wknd? i think i saw that somewhere on this forum...thanks!

Hey Slj,

It doesnt look like they are having another 2nd look weekend, but we were attempting to organize one and a few people wanted to go...however, we never got around to setting up a definite weekend for it.

Just wanted to jump in on the waitlist fun-- I got the alternate list letter too!

Bump.

The Admissions Office is on vacation right now, according to the message on their answering machine, but I just wanted to make sure this thread didn't get lost in the back pages of the bulletin board.

Still haven't received my letter yet.... Should I email them since the office is closed this week? I'm just getting kinda frustrated. I'm assuming they sent my letter to my old address on the east coast even though I had emailed and called the office about a change in address.... For those of you who were waitlisted, do you have a time frame within which you have to respond?

Caligurl,

The note card needs to be returned within 2 weeks.

You may want to send them an email/note saying that you would like to be on a waitlist, even if you haven't gotten any information. It can't hurt, and it can only help.

Good luck!

Can someone please post what the letter says?

Also, is there a form or something that you have to return in order to remain the waitlist? Or, are you suppose to write them a letter?

Thanks.

Yeah they had sent my letter to my parent's home, even though back in December I updated my address to my apt. I guess they thought since it's summer they'd resort to the "permanent" address listed on our AMCAS apps.

There is just a postcard enclosed "for our convenience" that you check off Yes or No whether or not you want to remain on the waitlist, and to give your current address and phone number. The letter basically said that we're on the alternate list but it's not a guarantee of admission. Hope this helps!

I wonder when they'll let us know if we're off the alternate list though. Do any of you guys have other acceptances at schools that start earlier than September? ie I'm planning on going to MCW which starts in August, but I'm not sure when to move and what clothes to pack just in case I do get into UCSD at the last minute...

ok I got this from Hero, ur awesome man

I owe you one...

here is what it says in the letter:

The UCSD School of medicine is pleased to inform you that you have been selected as an altrnate to the class entering in August 2002. although the places in the class are occupied presently, the Admissions Committee has established a list of candidates for admission if vacancies occur. We cannot, at this time, give you any absolute assurance that you will receive an offer of acceptance, but there is a possibliity that vacancies will occur.

Please let me know within two weeks of receipt of this letter whether or not you still wish to be considered as an laternate. A postcard is enclosed for your convenience in advising us of your status. Fell free to contact us if you believe we can be of additional help to you.

Sincereley,

Robert Resnik

hope it helps, thanks again Hero :)

I got one too!!
Any ideas on how many people received this letter?

when did you get it? and about 200 people got this.

BUMP.

I got my waitlist letter this past monday (june 3rd). Good luck to you all! I have no publications or anything interesting, so I don't think I stand much of a chance. However, I enlisted several friends to go down to SoCal and perform sexual favors. that's what I call Love. :D

hellojed - i'm in a similar situation. If I don't get accepted to UCSD then I'm heading to MCV/VCU (medical college of virginia) and I think orientation begins august 14th. I was going to call the SD office the following week when they get back. I'll post any info I find!

Labrynth79,
You got accepted to MCV/VCU?? People there are so unbelievably friendly. When were you interviewed? Mine was in OCt. I also got in at MCV, but later withdrew

MCV = medical college of virginia, which is not the same as MCW. I only wrote about it b/c I was drawing comparisons between our situations. Hellojed and I are both waitlisted at SD and if we got accepted then this is where we would go. However, SD doesn't start until september whereas most schools start in august. This means that if SD held us out until THEIR classes started, we would already be enrolled in schools. But can we transfer if we already started at another school?! That's the question I was going to pose onto the Admissions Office in about a week (among others).

Also, hellojed and I have to decide what to pack for med schools since the areas that we are going to are different than SD (in terms of weather and such).

Now back to your regularly scheduled SDN browsing . . .

No, you can't change schools once you've already started at one! Check the AAMC traffic rules. At this point, before a school accepts someone off the waitlist, they contact the school currently holding the student and make sure classes haven't started.

I interviewed on their last day of interviewing (march 12th!). They were not going to give me one - long story - but luckily I called them at the last minute and I got in off their waitlist a few weeks back. :D
Unfortunately I interviewed during their spring break so I didn't get to talk with any students or sit in on any lectures. Can you give me some feedback about the school? How did it compare to other schools you interviewed at? I know this sounds kinda concieted (but i'm not!), but I think I'll be getting a couple more school offers this coming month or at least by the end of next month. I think I'll choose MCV over the others, unless SD comes through (let's pray!), but I'd still like to get your advice. Thanks in advance!

P.S. Since I know this is the official UCSD thread, you can pm me the message if you like. :)

watcha - Orientation starts August 14th, but they haven't given me a listing of when classes start. I think august 19th, but not 100%.

oh, man. my birthday's on august 13th. . . I hope SD is kind enough to give me a very good birthday present.
