Official Umdnj-som Class Of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I live in a 2 bedroom apartment in one of the "nicer" areas and my rent is 950 a month. If you get roomies or live on the other side of the school you'll find it even cheaper.

for what it's worth my advice is

live alone > live with a s.o./friend > live with a classmate

Hey that's not too bad if you're sharing rent. 👍
Not that I personally want to do that....😳

I have a family (3 kids + wife) and I put my monthly budget together last night. I am definately going to have to take out a private loan in order to make up the difference each month. And this with my wife working.

$43,850????? Good lord, where did you see this??? I thought school tuition was only $21,000 (or so). The cost of living can't be THAT much....

BOOKS & SUPPLIES $ 889
FEES $ 4,820
PERSONAL $ 2,750
ROOM & BOARD $ 11,000
ROOMS & BOARD (*Living w/parents) $ 2,200
TRANSPORTATION $ 3,047
TUITION $ 22,246

TOTAL Single maintaining own residence $ 44,752
TOTAL *Single living in parents' home $ 35,952

Hahahaha ... "Fees?" What the heck are those??? Seems a bit vague to me...

BTW guys, does it bother you that in the "Pre-osteo" threads people rate schools like NYCOM above UMDNJ?? That just doesn't seem right! As I understand it, you can get into that school (and im not picking - just using an example) with a 23 on your MCAT.... scores like that won't even get you looked at here !!!

There's something to be said about having students with higher GPA's/MCAT scores around you. After all, you're as good as the company you keep...

IS the tuition $22.246, also for in-state residents? and does it increase every year?

Most of us are clueless, so who cares what people in pre-DO rate each school? I completely agree with you though.

It doesn't bother me in the least. I don't really rate schools according to their average MCAT/GPA's. How do students do once they are in? That's all that matters now. Not what they did to get there.
No offense to you or others that may over rate these numbers (in my opinion), but I sure as heck didn't apply to DO schools looking at that, and I sure don't intend on choosing where I go based on that, either!

About tuition/fees. This is a trick all state schools play. Tuition is all nice & low and appealing, but the fees pile up. It's like they divert some of the tuition to something they call fees. Plus fees are non-refundable, in case you decide to withdraw, FYI. (Something I found out the hard way, once....)

Fiiiine - you don't have to care about the numbers, but other people do!!! Where do you think the DO stigma (small as it is) comes from?? People scoff at us b/c in general, we have lower admission stats than our MD counterparts. But what if all schools were like UMDNJ and only accepted students w/ 27-28's on their MCATS???

Then, my friend, that stigma would virtually dissapear.

Kuba - make sure you keep in contact with the adcom (ie-Paula), but my advice is not to appear TOO eager. That screwed me last year!

27-28? That is just not true. IF the average is 27 thhere are plenty of people who have much much lower MCAT scores, and yes even at UMDNJ🙂

$22,246 IS the IN-State Tuition. The OUT of State tuition is more...i think..

For those of you who are attending the Orientation On April 13, where are most of you planning on staying??

Okay, let's just say there's one school that accepts people with an average score of 27, and another that accepts with an average of 24. 3 points.
On the MCAT. Let's just say that's 1 point per section. We all know that 1 point per section could easily have been a matter of maybe - 1 wrong answer on that section of the test that brought you into a lower scaled score. Or a higher scaled score because you guessed right on one more question than someone else. Gimme a break! This makes such a teeny difference in the scheme of things. 🙄

Also, I do not believe UMDNJ takes people with that much higher an average than the other DO schools.

Where do we draw the line then Orthodoc??? After all, using your logic, a 21 would also be indistinguishable from a 24 - and a 18 from a 21...

Well I'm not really talking about drawing any lines, Tones!

I'm saying that the 24 vs the 27 COULD have been nothing more than the difference between a lucky guesser, and a not lucky guesser, and that the truth is, there isn't a dramatic difference (more than 3 points?) in the average scores between schools. So thinking that you're going to be in 'better company' or not at the school with higher averages may land up letting you numbers people down.

this thread is so full of wrong information i wish i had the power to close it.

1) according to US NEWS the average MCAT for UMDNJ-SOM is 8.8 (8.8x3=26.4) this seems higher than 3 other random DO schools i looked up, if it matters to anyone.
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/directory/dir-med/brief/glanc_04138_brief.php

2) everyone at SOM gets instate tuition from first year with proof of residency

why are you guys bickering? there's nothing wrong if numbers matter to some and don't to others. it has been shown that there is some correlation between board scores and the mcat.

Tones brought up the question as to whether people were bothered by people on SDN having higher opinions of NYCOM than of UMDNJ, and went on to discuss this whole thing about better numbers make for better classmates. I disagreed and tried to explain why.

I'm not sure I agree with you that 'this thread is so full of wrong information', either. Where's all this wrong information? 😕 If anything is wrong, current students have usually stepped in to clear it up.

A difference of 3 points in MCAT average is HUGE. It's the 40th percentile versus the 60th percentile..

I agree with above poster though, why is everyone here bickering? Does not seem like a representative UMDNJ class that is very close-knit.

Hi all
I'm a first year here and I just wanted to throw out a congrats to the members of the class of 2011
🙂
Hope to see you on April 13

actually, there r a decent number of students in my class w/ below 27 mcats and also above 30 mcats, so i don't think the rumor that we accept students w/ only min 27 mcats is true. an average is just that. there r still people below/above the average. i dunno if there is min cutoff though. and yeah, i'd admit there might be a DO stigma but i know some ppl who only applied 2 DO schools and i also have a classmate who had the numbers 2 go 2 a TOP MD school and choose only DO so in the end what matters most is what u do w/ urself once ur in. DO school admissions r getting more competitive b/c of the high # of acceptable applicants 2 med schools and i know a couple of MD schools w/ lower average numbers, but i think that numbers r only as important as we make them once we're in. sure, it might be more intellectually stimulating if ur classmates r all geniuses but no where is that the case and in the end, we as individuals r the ones responsible 4 our education and how we do.

Fair enough.... You know, I should have never opened up THAT can of worms🙄 Numbers/stats are only important until you get in to Med School; after, all that matters is your performance.

Just one point: I never said that 27 MCAT was a cutoff - I always knew it was around the average. And for those of you who have been accepted w/ lower scores, you received an acceptance letter b/c of something else in your application that was reaaaaly strong (IE - great GPA, research exp). So it all evens out in the end.

Does anybody know what the usmle pass rate for undnjsom is? ... i mean first time pass rate.

😍 Hey, anybody feel like posting their #1 top reason for choosing UMDNJ? Just one reason. Your #1. It's mostly curiosity, partly just trying to drum up some happy vibes for this thread. 😀

Seriously, I'd love to know what has motivated people to choose UMDNJ, if you don't mind sharing. Close to home for you? Tuition? Research? Something else? Please?!

haha, well, it's really been a combination of factors for me (like location, tuition, reputation), but if I had to pick one reason, it would probably be location/convenience...
Hope that helps 🙂

It does help, actually. I can't tell you what a tough time I'm having deciding. Never expected it to be this challenging!

But I also just thought it would be nice to get some UMDNJ love flowing....ha ha! 😍

I picked UMDNJ over a couple of schools, allopathic and osteopathic because I've never seen happier medical students...might be an exaggeration or a silly reason but thats basically it. 😍

Since you're the housing expert I thought I'd pose this question to you: do any of the housing complexes offer free internet services?? I only ask b/c I already have a cell phone and would like to avoid having to pay for the extra phone/wireless expense.

I'm going to be one broke kid over these next few years🙄

Your stats are good...only problem is that it's late in the cycle, but if they told you through April, then I guess you have a chance.
Hope that helps 🙂

i would have to say the class size!

Hey , DoctorJAY after your first acceptance call, did you receive any other phone call from the staff of umdnjsom?

ummm...is that english?😕

Sorry - I know that "q" wasn't addressed to me

well i'm a third year now so it's tough to remember that far back but i'm sure i received a letter regarding acceptance and i know they sent me a list of all the housing options as well as 2 license plate frames and some other info.

they send tons of info and please NO ONE go out and buy all the books on the "required" text book list, wait til you get here to buy your books so you can ask your "big bro/sis" what to buy.

Can someone remind me what the deadline to RSVP for housing weekend is?

I've been a bit occupied and I'm looking for the form ATM. I just want to know if I need to call Paula and beg her to add me to the list or do I have time?

Thanks.

Don't have it with me, but it's some time near the end of March, I think.

Depakote - I just sent mine in the other day...I think it was March 23rd, which means you have some time...

Yah - that was my reaction too!! LOL! All I've gotten is that calendar and a letter telling me how to apply for financial aid (with the wrong address on it....)!! No login ID, no license plate frames...no nuttin'!!

I remember during my interview tour the med student giving the tour said that the campus store does not sell UMDNJ-SOM Memorabilia. You can only get it through student clubs.

what about all those UMDNJ - MEDICINE sweatshirts people were wearing?

I think the student clubs design them and order them. So you can get the sweatshirts from the clubs. Thats what I remember from my interview.

Sorry but that post kind of upsetted me. I got into NYCOM with a 26 and you can make fun of that all you want and I have an interview and UMDNJ at the end of the month. So, I really don't think it matters about the MCATs as much as everything together.

👍 that's my sweatshirt!!! that was something the ortho club put together as a fundraiser last year and they have continued it since it was such a great response.

anything that's in the "school store" in the lobby area usually benefits the clubs and was designed by the clubs. so there are SOM specific items to purchase but proceeds go to fund club activities.

wait til you guys get here for white coat ceremony, the clubs will be all over you (and your parents) to buy stuff:laugh:

p.s. sorry you guys didn't get the license plate frames, if you check out the hospital parking lot you'll prolly see them on some of the third and fourth years' cars.

I assume you're referring to my post. sowee🙄 , no offense intended.

To those of you in med school - do you have time to work out?? I would loove to hit the gym for an hour a day if possible...

What a silly question! I can't believe we both got accepted to the same school .
