Have a friend who got interview. Email to himsaid they are trying to wrap up end of Sept or early Oct. Something about low turn out. Anyone else hear of this?
Yes I did. By the sound of their email their last interview date is October 2nd, and all dates are full.

Do you think the interviews are ending much earlier this yr because

1) the school has already filled its class OR

2) less people are interested inUMKC this yr?

my email specifically said, "we are running short on interviewees"

I received an interview invite a week or two ago, but I am seeing that there are still spots open for 10/9 and 10/16. I didn't get an email saying that they were low on interviewees or are cutting it short this year. Not saying that it isn't true though, just basing it off what the school said in their interview invite and confirmation.

Good to know. I submitted my app. June 1st. IF I would have gotten an invite I would have received it by now. Thanks for the information. Will help others out.

I interviewed today and they said that they have interviewed under a 100 people so far and they expect many applications over the next couple of days (because of the deadline). They said they plan to interview 136 (yes, they said that specific number lol) before they accept 90% of their class on December first. They will interview about another 40 more people at the beginning of the year to fill the remaining spots (they have 109 spots), but I believe they said these 40 will be solely from MO.

Do you think they're interviewing less people this year because they accepted more people from their reserved admissions program?

Some food for thought:

UMKC interviewed 137 people in 2014 per the ADEA Official guide to dental schools so it sounds like they are purring along as usual if the plan is 136 this year.

UMKC gets something like 700-900 applications each year, some of those folks may not be qualified, but I imagine that they have plenty of good applicants. They might interview some that they really, really like in Sept/early-Oct and then take another look at what they have once the hard deadline of Oct. 1st arrives. Maybe any talk of running out of applicants had to do with a pre-Oct 1st group? In the past I have received rejections/an invitation/questions via email during or around the first/second week of October. (This is year 4 for me ).

In previous years they had a school calendar available on the website that I would watch from time to time, they usually had interview time set aside on Mondays up to almost Thanksgiving. I'm not saying they used all of that time, but if you interview...around 15 people per date then 136/15 is around 8-9 interview dates. If they are doing Mondays pretty exclusively then that is about two months of Mondays....so the middle of September through the middle of November.

Don't give up. You don't know about this year until they actually invite you or reject you. And then if you do get an interview you will have to wait for Dec. 1st....and then if you don't get in you land on the waitlist until August. And yes, I have heard of people getting a chance to come off the waitlist right before school starts in August. My point is that this is a long haul and while it's never too early to prepare for next year there is still time this year to hear something, so good luck everyone.

The wait continues......

I'm sorry. I don't understand what you mean?

I don't really know how to explain "One Time."

Lets say you are in a tennis match. Down in the set 15-40 and you win two points to bring it to Duece. You scream "One Time!" Then you are excited because you were down in the count and you still have a shot to win the match.

I said "One Timeeeeee" Because I read what you post about 40 interviews for MO residents only. I am a MO resident. I haven't heard anything yet. I am down 15-40 and that statement about only interviewing MO residents brings me up to 40-40. So I scream "One Timeeeee" Like that is my time to get an interview.

Anyone who has received an interview from UMKC, has your portal changes or does it still say, "received/under review"

Anyone know how over-represented minorities (e.g. Asians) are treated at schools like UMKC? I realize ORMs have a tough time getting into the Ivies--but how about the midwestern schools?

We have several Asians in my class (11 that I’m 100% sure) and there’s some in every class.

I guess I am asking if the school uses race based metrics (affirmative action) to favor under-represented minorities--which hurts the chances for over-represented ones.

(For ex. Schools on the coasts make it very difficult for Asian students to be accepted. So while there are many Asians at schools like Columbia and UCLA, they had to outscore everyone to be given acceptance).

I don’t know if there’s a way for me to know. However, we give in-state tuition if you are URM. Also, there’s a Scholarship you get every year for “diversifying the profession.” So, maybe yes.

For people who received an interview invite to UMKC, are we really supposed to fill out their EIGHT page supplemental application with the EXACT same information already included in AADSAS? Am I the only one who finds that a little silly?

Yeah I spent a few hours this weekend filling out that mother-in-law of a supplemental app.

you have to

Interview attire: What's the dress code? I have a friend who posted his interview pics, and he wore jeans and a silver sportcoat. (Granted he thinks UMKC is beneath him). But isn't suit and tie required (professional dress)? Matching suit? What are people wearing to their interview (guys)?

😱
Definitely matching suit if you are taking the school seriously and you want them to take you seriously!
Maybe not necessarily matching but as professional as possible. That’s your first impression of the day!

That's exactly what I was thinking. Navy or charcoal. Matching. Plus, a conservative tie.
Is my buddy done?

Have you heard of anyone else not wearing a matching suit?

Everyone was wearing a matching suit in my interview and the interviewees I have seen this year all look very nice and professional with their matching suits.
One lady in my interview did not wear a matching suit but was still professional. I think it was like Khaki pants and pink blazer. It looked nice. She’s in my class
But I would say play it safe!

I just got one today, scheduled for the 30th

Man I would have loved to have that date available when we signed up! I had to scramble to finish the supplemental in 3 days, but I guess you did too 😉

I also actually went through the interview process last year, so if anybody is nervous about what to expect I can help you out!

I’d love to chat with you if you’d be willing to share a little more details on what the interview was like/best way to be prepared?

What is the actual interview like?

The actual interview is very laid back, and will be with one of the faculty members in their office. The questions focus on who you are as a person, and move on to more general life opinions. The thought I had during my interview was that some of the questions seemed very similar to the ones on the huge supplemental app we filled out haha. I think the best way to prepare under those circumstances is to just re-read that supplemental the morning of the interview along with your normal pre-interview routine.

I'm not sure if they're doing it differently this year, but we also had a short group session around a table where we gave written answers to ethical questions, and we also individually recorded short videos for the admissions committee. Everyone was SO nervous for the video, but after talking to the people at the school, they're not going to be judging what you say or even paying much attention to the words, they're just looking to see what you're like in person.

Congrats! Where are you from and what are your stats if you don't mind me asking!
I am from Arkansas
3.7 sGPA, 21 AA, 21 PAT, 150+ shadowing/volunteering and I'm also a student-athlete

I received a rejection email today. I was missing 1 prereq and lacking shadow hours at 5 different dental offices. (so this was expected) I applied to UMKC without looking at the requirements. Just wanted to give some hope to those who have not received a rejection yet!

I received mine as well.

Sorry to hear that you two.

Were these post-interview?

Also, DWB--did they specifically mention that having not done five offices is the reason? May I ask your stats and ECs?

I got one too, it didn't mention an exact reason why but said we could call and ask after January 1st if we wanted to know why, stats are 3.99 oGPA, 4.00 sGPA, 24 AA, 24 TS, 22 PAT, leadership, over 150 shadowing hours, strong letters of Rec, work experience, research experience, lots (over 1000 hours) of volunteering but OOS

For the people that got the secondary application for the interview, did you try to keep your answers short and sweet or did you guys write a lot? I know some questions will have longer answers than others.

yea being OOS blows

I don't know a whole lot about how they decide who to invite or not, but I have heard that they aren't very OOS friendly unless you have some connection to the school such as family members who attended there

I know the school has contracts with residents of other states that don't have dental schools. I wonder if those students fall under OOS or not

No, the email stated that they were unable to give me an invitation to interview.
