***Official UNECOM Class of 2009!!!***

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was looking at Rent.com. Anybody live in a high rise apt with garage parking? I found only 1 in portland...any more? Right now, I live in a high rise in FL and it's great. I'm hoping to find one similar to it.

you'll definetly end up in portland if you want to live in a high rise... I think the tallest building in biddeford is probably the med school building on campus 😉

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo not PORTLAND..

Just kidding. Trying to bump the thread up.

I used to live on the 7th floor in a building on Congress St, which is in downtown Portland. Whenever I told a local that I lived on the 7th floor, they commonly responded with confusion, and said, "There's a building in Portland with that many floors?"

They were being facetious, since there are probably oh, hmmm...... maybe 9 or 10 buildings downtown taller than 4 stories. Most of the taller buildings are headquarters for the different banks, NBC, some law firm, and two "city center" buildings with businesses in them. I'm not sure if they have apts or if they do, how to go about finding them. I wouldn't recommend the building that I lived in.

The previous poster is right - in Bidd, Saco, Kennebunk, etc. you won't find a building taller than 3-4 stories.

One place that seems to own alot of the downtown apartments is called "Apartment Mart". I know, it's a K-mart, ghetto sounding name, but they really do have hundreds of apartments that they lease and might be able to help you find something. Their number is 207-773-1814. Another tall building that might have high-rise apts is called back bay towers. 207 772 7050. probably 15-20 stories high, which is tall for Portland. I always thought it was an assisted living place, but I'm probably wrong. I've never been there. Anyway, good luck to all looking for housing.

Unfortunately, although there are 120 students in each class, you probably won't find any one particular building/complex where more than 6-7 students live. Alot of students live on Hills beach or Biddeford Pool in the seasonal rentals, so it is possible to at least live within a couple of blocks of a large number of classmates.

Thank you for the info! For those that live in Portland, how is the commute? Esp during winter? UNECOM had a snow day yesterday, I noticed 😉

well technically we had a snow 2 hours, but us first years didn't have anything in the afternoon anyway, and since they didn't close till 3:00pm, it didn't really make any difference to us, plus they started class up again at 800am this morning. So it really didn't matter at all. Oh well.... TGIF!!!

I lived in Portland during years 1 and 2, and the drive for me was about 35-40 minutes depending on traffic. It didn't bother me and I didn't feel like I lost time, even though you do lose 1-1.5 hrs a day with the drive. I split studying between home and school, and stayed the night at a friend's if we were going to be up half the night prepping for a test.

The main thing that I thought sucked was never being able to go home during the breaks between classes. Sometimes, you might have wanted to take a 1-2 hour nap, and you can't. Plus, sometimes I got sick at school and couldn't drive myself home and had to call my husband to come get me. Another downfall is if you forget something important - but the first time you do that you'll never do it again it's such a hassle!

It's not a big deal though. Just bring food, have a friend who lives nearby, and don't be too scatterbrained. I preferred it, because I live near everything else besides school. Friends in Biddeford Pool were always more reluctant to make the drive to Portland to do fun stuff, but since I live right here, small fun side trips don't really cut into my study time.

happy monday everyone!

question.

anyone in Maine now, do you have Verizon or Cingular for cell phones? if so which gets better reception?? my plan is ending soon with cingular and i was just looking into other plans but wasn't sure what was best

i'm very happy with sprint...but i know many people have verizon too.

i've got verizon... can't use it in alfond, but it works outside here at UNE and all over biddeford (although it doesn't work in hannaford's for some reason)...

Cingular recently bought AT&T. AT&T's coverage here was okay but spotty in some areas around the school. Cingular is building a new tower (not verified) and are very good about distributing courtesy min. for dropped calls.

:luck:

hehehe are you guys online durring class.
I see myself doing that next year.
SDN is addictive.

BTW which cell phone company offers unlimited long distance?

I thought so, too. I think only two or three others in our class are active SDNers though - lot's of people IM.

What do you mean unlimited long distance? Do you mean unlimited minutes? Most plans have 'long distance' from your calling area.

There is also VONAGE. We have that, as well.

:luck:

Tell me about it. Only about 3-5 people on this thread are actually going to attend UNE... we lost a whole bunch to NJ. I was hoping more will be signing on.

Long distance plan in the states and in Canada. My friend, living in Boston, has unlimited long distance to canada. But maybe that is home phone. I will check with him.

Some Cell plans have international (i.e. Canada) Vonage covers Canada, as well. Vonage works w/cable modem and you avoid reception issues. It's like a land line w/out hidden fees and high taxes (Maine has high phone tax).

You can find info online.

How many accepted UNErs went to NJ?? Just curious.

Thanks for the info. I will look it up.

BTW.. I am not sure about the exact numbers. But I did notice with the acceptance some overlap.

I guess I should ask, How many have decided on SDN have been accepted at UNE and have decided to go to UNE. Michelle, UNE2009LMD, I, who else...

I have AT&T. It does work somewhat in Alfond, but not at all at Hannaford's grocery store so that must be a quirk of the building rather than the carriers. Sorry to see that we lost some of you to NJ- I can't imagine why anyone with a choice between living in ME and NJ would choose there but they have to keep their school open too somehow.

My agonizing choice came down to the fact there is nothing in Maine worth 13k more a year x 4. I really really really really really liked UNE though and it broke my heart to let go of my seat. I think the major factor that I liked about it was the people: faculty, students, and even fellow interviewees. Good people at UNE, period. UMDNJ does have a lot of the same benefits that UNE had, small class size, good clinical program, etc.

Anyway, I’m going to raid Canada with DocBill sometime during first year regardless.

 Hi Doc Bill,

I thought I would bump the thread for you, being a fellow SDN UNECOM thread-keeper and all.... 😉

Gioia, you are the master keeper.. I remember all the work you put in for the class of 2008 😉 Thanks for the bump... I guess I am slow today.

SDN has been slow lately.

Nate, thanks for speaking so highly of UNECOM. Like I said since so many people applied to UNE and NJ we should have a sister school system started. We are definitely on... I think public enemy is also taking part. Oh and by the way, if you guys ever want to get away from NJ and take a break in Maine.. not a problem. You won't even have to sing oh Canada in the morning.. hehehe.

hey im wondering about housing. when is the best time to look for a place if you want to live on the beach. also im from chicago. do i have to fly down to maine too see the place before i sign a lease, or is it safe enough to just have a picture and someones word and description to get it. because i was thinking of going to maine in june to settle in - should i get a place then- or is earlier better?
and last wheres a good place to meet potential roommates? does anyone room with classmates of the opposite sex or is that too distracting 🙂

Mich, That is odd.. it even regonized my SIN (Candian equivalent to SSN). So maybe call the school and see if they have a mixup.

DIDO... today was like COOOOLLLLDDD. I could not feel anything. :scared: 😱 I had a sweater, a windbreaker and a winter coat. Scarf, turtel next kind of thing for the neck and ears. Unfortunately, I can't find my longjohns. Hnnn at least it sunny.

UNECOM 09 definitely needs a group started! I 2nd that.

Howdy!

You may want to contact COMSA ([email protected]) - w/ whom I am sure you have already been in contact. They will give you the details. It was sometime in early spring or late winter of last year that we got our class page on pipeline (the uber-cool part of SDN is that you guys get to know each other early 😉 )

That should do it. If not, I'm always lurking on SDN.

Take care and have FUN!!

CONGRATS!

If you are having trouble logging in, I recommend calling the help desk. I spoke with a woman who was tremendously helpful. She even explained how these sites fit into a students workflow. Imagine...a help desk that is actually helpful...amazing!

That's true, UNE's help desk is even prompt!!

:luck:

UNE Help desk actually has AOL IM... go to the pipeline page and down the right side they give a bunch of names to try. Kind of cool.

For those who don't know what pipeline is some info.

Pipeline is the websystem they have set up at UNE. That is where you check your email, your class messages, student clubs and associations, communicate with each other, chat, posting, helpful information.

if you go to UNE.edu.. on the bottom there is a link to pipeline... or you go directly there.

http://pipeline.une.edu/cp/home/loginf

Follow instructions, using your SSN and your Birthdate to get access. There are two different systems. One is for your grades and records and the other is pipeline. You have to log on to both and get your sign in and password set up.

yup pipeline is working now so lets get a group going on there too...we know those ppl are attending UNE for sure...docbill you wanna set it up? 🙂 lemme know

We will continue with SDN for now.. even though I would like to block this site. It is consuming too much time.
