Official University of Michigan Class of 2010 Thread part 01

I wish I had know that there is so much strategy involved in getting merit money. I would have tried harder at my interviews after I got in to UMMS to gain some leverage.
An unfortunate, but legitimate, reason to hold multiple offers a bit longer than you might otherwise. 🙁

I did get a scary email from the financial aid office about not sending stuff in. I totally forgot that we need to submit copies of parents' tax forms and stuff. Guess I'll drop them off on Monday.
What? 😕 I didn't forget this... I never knew it in the first place! 😱 I'm looking at the Financial Aid Application and Instructions right now and I don't see anything about sending anything other than the FAFSA and online Michigan application.

Yo Sail-

No worries. I just called. Here's the deal: you only need to submit copies of your parents info if after reviewing your FAFSA info, they determine that you need to fill out a parental verification form, and according to the lady in the FA office, that only happens if you submit your info before your (or your parents) taxes are completed.

I don't mean any offense by this, but (without knowing any specifics on anyone in the premat program or anything much specifically about those receiving merit scholarships) I'd be a bit surprised of the two groups overlapped.

The few merit scholarships that are given are going to the "very top students" that Michigan wants to recruit away from the other top school to which they were accepted. The prematriculation program is designed to give students a little head start or academic coaching before entering medical school.

I may be way off, but I don't picture many students with the grades, scores, and background to have the top schools fighting over them also feeling the need to get a jump on their academic preparation/readiness for medical school.

there are many reasons why someone would sign up for the pre-mat besides those you stated. surely, there are "very top students" who have been out of school for a year or two and just want to get back into the swing of things. and what about those students who simply sign up because it's a great way to meet some future classmates? i also assume there are a few of us out there who had no idea what the pre-mat was but signed up "just in case." regardless of what the program is designed for, the only thing those who did sign up have in common is that they are fairly certain about attending UM--which brought me to my original question.

i've since called the admissions office, and they told me signing up for the pre-mat has no bearing on scholarships. also, all merit scholarship LETTERS have been signed and sealed and are being picked up today for delivery. not everyone will be notified by email. will it ever end?! good luck guys!!

You're right Dr. IHTFP. It would have been better if I'd said that I'd be surprised if the two groups overlapped much. Certainly there are many situations underwhich a "top applicant" (a term that is still undefined) might end up in the premat program, but I'm still guessing that there aren't many of the big merit award winners in the program. Also, with the small number of big $$$ scholarships give out, the odds of the two coinciding seem relatively small.

I do agree with the multitude of reasons for attending the prematriculation program. I thought about doing it for the classmate-meeting aspect, but decided that I'd rather have several more weeks of my last real summer vacation! 👍

Did they mean processed by the government? Cause I just made my mom do theirs on Turbo Tax then used the numbers for my FAFSA and Umich app. Glad that I didn't just completely forget to do something though... I was getting worried there!

To be honest I don't really know. Here's what I do know though, the woman I spoke with told me that only SOME students would need to submit their parent's W2s (or whatever), that the Michigan Financial Aid office would be extremely clear about who did need to submit this, AND that this info was ABSOULUTELY NOT due before 3/31, rather it would need to be submitted at a later date. Sorry I don't have more specifics.

I don't understand...so they why did they send out that email requesting documents (if you did your FAFSA after turning in taxes)?

Does anyone know how to get into this? I don't remember ever getting a login/password for this below:

"To see what documents you need to submit, go to Wolverine Access at
https://wolverineaccess.umich.edu > Student Business > login > View Financial
Aid Document Status > Aid Year 2007."

Elastase, I would talk to the Fin Aid people. I had access to all that stuff, but I'm already on Wolverine Access as a U of M undergrad (that's the website where we do all of our fin aid stuff and schedule our classes) You get a uniqname and password when you register at Umich. This probably goes back to what midwesternguy said about not having to do it before March 31st, cause non-U of M people won't have uniqnames.

the gist: call the fin aid office

Yup, calling definitely cleared it up (they are very helpful). Thanks BD.

Anyone else liking the new www.umich.edu site? it looks very clean and professional. Plus, now there's a link to groupwise email (that's the med email account).

I like most of it, but I think the changing picture at the top is too narrow (plenty wide, not tall enough). All of the pictures in it seem like they'd be better if you could see more of them. Andy why does the "Health and Medical Resources" tab list the schools of Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing, Public Health, and Social Work but not MEDICINE?

So what are you guys planning on doing about housing?

Right now... a whole lot of nothing! :scared:

I'm not really sure how to go about really looking for a place (not living in or particularly near Ann Arbor) or deciding if I want a roomate, and if so how to find/choose one. 😕

I did drive around the white coat ghetto & some other parts of campus when I was in town for the UofM vs. Notre Dame NIT game. I saw the outside of some condos and houses and copied down a lot of phone #s, but have done nothing with them...

Right now there's a few "deals" going on at the white-coat ghetto appts. I don't know all the details, and they wouldn't say when the deals will end, but I think Med Center Court is currently $30 off/month and $500 off first month's rent. I unfortunately don't think I'll be able to decide (on a school or a place to live) early enough to take advantage of any current deals.

I've also started looking at condo options, though I know absolutely nothing about buying property. I'll be talking to an agent soon to see if it would even be an option for me. Anyone know what you normally need to be able to buy a place? Like, if I could pay a down payment, might I get a loan, despite having no income?

I really want to stay near the med school. I am used to biking or walking decent distances, but I admit I have this habit of skipping optional things if I feel the effort of getting there is too much. Basically, I hate transportation in general, I just want to be there 🙂 . If I get a chance I'll go to Ann Arbor again before second-look to see some more options, but I'm sure I'll be sticking around for awhile after second-look to get as much info as I can from current students.

Ya I saw that. The deals seem pretty good but I have heard that it is not that great a place but I'll hopefully get to take a look (but probably will be too late for the deals they have now)

I am looking into Nielsen Square condos.

I don't think I will look into buying

I don't know why I'm surprised. It isn't like there hadn't been a single update for over a month! +pity+

So Sail, what's the story? Did you get a scholarship???

I've been utilizing the search function of SDN, and found the UMich Class of 2009 thread. They topped out at 13 pages, so it looks like we'll likely best them! I haven't read it yet, but if I find interesting details, I'll let you know.

Oh, and there are other old UMich threads that I'm looking into as well. Just search allopathic (or pre-allo) for "UMich" TITLED threads older than 6 months.

Edit: The 2009 thread talks about: Housing in Ann Arbor, Good/Bad matchlist, 3rd year hell, football, hockey, community/underserved health issues, MSTP/research info, and reputation of UMich outside the midwest. Biggest issue seemed to be people simultaneously complaining about and promoting how well Michigan matches to the coasts, and how much this has to do with the strength/weakness of its reputation there.

Just as I had anticipated... nothing for me!

Those of us not at UofM undergrad can't buy tickets now, since we have no student number (at least I can't). It seems silly to require med students (and other grad students) to buy tickets before they even know if they're going there. I think we'll be able to buy tickets in the summer (people in the c/o 2009 thread mentioned a July deadline, I think), but I think I'm going to call tomorrow to check, if I get time. And $315 for a partner ticket! Darn!

In other news, anyone not know what they're doing about health insurance next year? UofM's GradCare is the standard, but it appears to be $209 per month! Seems a bit pricey for ~23 year old's insurance!

2006 U-M Student Football Ticket Information

ORDERING: To be eligible for a student football season ticket ($157 - includes seven home games plus a $10 service charge), you must plan to be registered for the Fall 2006 term. Only current or previously enrolled students may order now. New students (incoming freshmen and transfers) will receive ticket information in May.

That is especially interesting considering that financial aid allows us to budget a maximum of $2000 for health care!

That's a lot for health insurance. I think you get minimal insurance with your tuition. that allows you to use this clinic for small things, like ob/gyn visits and general check ups. I don't think you get dental with that. However, the dent school has a program, where the dent-student service is offered for a reduced fee. The question is: are you brave enough for the challenge? Basically, they get to use you for practice.

I thought I remembered them requiring proof of insurance (UofM or otherwise.) I don't think they'd require that if they gave you insurance w/ tuition. But I could be mistaken...

Thanks for posting that link. Good stuff. I am reading footcramp's comments. He doesn't seem too happy at UMich.

Well I've pretty much settled on Michigan (go blue!) - figured I should get a start on the housing/roommate thing. I'm currently an undergrad at UMich and live like... 2 blocks away from the med school, near Kerrytown. I want to find a 2-3bdrm around the same area ~$500/month/room, does anyone want to go in with me?

No real gender/age/anything preferences, save for cleanliness! 🙄

If interested, PM me and maybe we'll sneak off to check out some apartments during second look...

By the way, big brother is actually denying some of the posts... I posed a rather innocuous message about Welcome Weekend that seems to have disappeared. 👎 🙁 👎

My censored post, in my opinion, didn’t really even say that much – and said nothing that wasn’t true. I answered a previous question, saying that in a chat we had been told that Welcome Weekend and 2nd look weekend were very similar and that there wasn’t much reason to attend both.

I then lamented the fact that Welcome Weekend (unintentionally) encourages some initial segregation in the class. Welcome Weekend is target for minorities (and I subsequently read on the admitted student’s website that Michigan even pays for travel expensed for those who are invited to attend.) I noted that one of the main reasons that I was attracted to UofM was the diversity in the class, and regretted that Welcome Weekend meant that many of my minority classmates would not be around for my initial introduction to the class of 2010. Certainly there will be time to get to know people once classes begin, but it is unfortunate that (even with the best intentions) the medical school encourages some initial segregation by running two different intro weekends, one mainly for minorities, and one for everyone else.

There will only be one first impression of the medical school for all of us – either Welcome Weekend or 2nd look weekend. While I understand that reasons for second look weekend (and support the concept,) some of the “side effects” of the plan are unfortunate.

Interesting. I think it would be better if they did what several schools seem to be doing: hold one single second look for all of the accepted students, and then have some kind of extra dinner or other event for the minority students so that they can meet one another and discuss minority life at the school. But maybe it's a logistics problem because U Mich has such a big class....Baylor also has separate second looks, and they have a large class as well. On the other hand, Baylor seems to have not invited most people to the regular second look, so I dunno.... 😕

minority students tend to gravitate toward one another anyway. they share something that we cannot know. It's not segregation, it's making the place friendlier (I guess). But I think it's unfair that they could have their trip paid for. I wonder how they would react if I were to just drop in that day to see what they do...hehehe.

a class of 170 is about average.

Hey guys!

I am most likely (95% sure) going to be joining you in Ann Arbor this fall! I can't attend second look (dang graduation ceremonies), but am super excited to cheer on the maize and blue come September. Any M1s interested in getting an IM flag football team together?

I definitely understand how you feel. I am a minority student myself and I dislike the idea of having two separate ocassions. I am going to attend Second Look and I hope I am not going to be the odd one out.

Yes, I was just thinking about this today (not having a separate weekend but a session or two for minority students).

Yes, its definitely odd...and hard to explain to others that there is a separate weekend (I am a minority also). Michigan has incredible diversity in its medical school class (more so than even the UCs). They take that extra step for recruitment, which I think is awesome! I think it makes sense in that they creates a special setting for minorities to get the perspective from fellow minorities about Michigan and Ann Arbor. I agree that it should not be an entire different weekend, but maybe a day before the second look weekend...so that we can meet everyone (not just the future minority students).

Princessd3: I will NOT be able to make the welcome weekend (unfortunately, but thankfully there is another weekend), but plan to attend the second look weekend...so don't worry, you will not feel left out!

I'm down if I go to U-M... that's not fully decided yet, though...

Can't wait to meet some of you all at Welcome Weekend (assuming others are going)!

I've mostly been on the pre-allo forum but decided to make the leap as it looks more probable that I'll be at Michigan. I didn't want to become committed to this thread and then all of a sudden turn around and abandon (err..betray) you for the scarlet and grey (how ironic that it came down to those two schools). Unlike football as of late, it appears that UMich has finally come through in the clutch. Hopefully this establishes a pattern that will continue while we're students!

I don't know if there is anything clutch about an IM football team, but I did play in the championship game here at BYU a couple of years ago. Sadly, I think I've become Uncle Rico since then. Any other Napoleon fans out there?
