Thanks! It is a good day when I can wake up and touch my toes (with or without a warmup.) 😛

Disown your parents. They're probably too rich.

...Gosh, I hope my fin aid estimate is good... I don't really have a choice now! Do you have rich parents, Sail? ...
I think I may be running into a common nontrad problem, my parents have already reached retirement age (mom was a teacher, dad was in banking) and have done a good job of being fiscally responsible throught their working life. While (rightfully so) none of their retirement savings will be allocated for my medical education, it apparently kills my possibility for aid. 🙁

I was also confused by my estimate because I thought that if the financial aid office determined that you and/or your family had to pay a chunk of money for your family contribution, there would be a sizeable "unmet need" that would not be met by the initial financial aid offer. (But could be covered later through some additional loans (Plus Graduate Student Loan or a University Loan.))

Is that assumption correct? I received all loans, but I didn't have very much "Total Unmet Need." I'd expecte to either see a combination of loans, and grants along with a small unmet need, or all loans and a high unmet neet.

Yes, she's my hero! And she's totally right, no, buffalos (or is it buffaloes?) do NOT have wings.

From my understanding, this is what they do: Take the total that you'll need (since you're instate, it's about 48,000/yr), subtract amount your parents CAN pay (not that they will, but it's the amount that they theoretically CAN pay), subtract the federal loans for which you're eligible, and divide the remaining amount by 2. That's the grant $$ that you'll get.

Did you pay attention during the finaid talk? Sheeeesh, and I thought you were a good student. 😀

I did pay attention and had a similar understanding... which is why I was surprised to se no grant money (as in $0.00)... Yet after federal loans I don't have much unmet need (which I interpret to mean that they aren't expecting much of a family contribution.) But if that's correct, then why offer only loans? 😕

Your unmet need is anything you have to pay BY YOURSELF. This does not include what your parents can pay. Your parents' contribution + loans are "met need," and your unmet need is determined from subtracting those from 48,000.

Hmmm, I'd get in touch with them, Sailcrazy. Maybe they forgot to give you grants  😕 .

My wife and I met in our junior high band. We played trombones together in junior high and high school (sadly gave it up for college). We both love the joke 😀 .

maybe I'm not interpreting what you're saying correctly. How much in loans did you get?

I don't think that's correct. On my estimate, the "Total Aid Package" is comprised of:
  • University of Michigan Scholarship
  • University of Michigan Grant
  • University of Michigan Loan
  • Federal Direct Subsidized Stafford Loan
  • Federal Direct UnSubsidized Stafford Loan
No mention is made of Estimated Family Contribution. They have calculated the Unmet Need as the difference between the total budget and my total aid package, so there doesn't seem to by any other place for money from the 'rents. That's why I'm equating unmet need with EFC.

happydays said:

I was previously offered the $1k “in-state” merit scholarship, so everything in my financial offer beyond that is in Stafford Loans. (That covers all but the unmet need.)

I will, but probably not until tomorrow. Besides, why go straight to the source when we can use all of our uneducated opinions to work it out! 😀

Nevermind...max fed unsubbed loan is 45,167/yr. Now I can see how you can get 0 grants. (I thought it was 14,000.)

I don't have any suggestions for you guys about financial aid, but I just wanted to share that the reason I started dating my ex was because he sat next to me in neurobio class and whispered sweet nothings to me like, "you're really making my glutamate receptor neurons fire like crazy." I should have known from the beginning how much trouble this man would be. 🙄 :meanie:

I asked the finaid office about this. You don't need to submit your 1040 to get an estimate of your need-based award (just submitting your FAFSA with estimates from last year should be ok). But when you want the REAL amount of grants you'll be getting, then you'll have to enter this year's info. Merit-based awards are not depended upon your finances.

i don't necessarily trust my mom's estimated numbers. so, i couldn't trust any estimated award package based on them. it's a long story. bottom line: i'm gonna need that dang 1040. 😡

more bad news: i requested the academic calendar for this fall, and our winter break is only 10 days, from 12/23 through 1/1. the last couple years, the M1's have gotten over two weeks. even worse, i have an absolutely positively unbreakable commitment that requires that i be in florida no later than the evening of 12/21. i based that commitment on the information i had at the time, which showed UM finishing for the fall usually around mid-december (with similar schedules at all the other schools i was considering). i've already started writing people at the med school to see if anything can be done, because whether i like it or not, this could end up playing a part in where i decide to go to school. sheesh.

personal tidbit: I have 3 wisdom teeth. I'm getting them all pulled out before the end of summer.
Did you lose the fourth one or get it removed already?

I have no water in my apartment at the moment. 🙄 And to appease all of the wisecrackers out there, it is NOT because I didn't pay my bill. I'm only glad that it didn't go off while I was showering.... 😱

It will probably be fine. As long as they're not having exams, you should be able to miss a few days of school and catch up by watching lecture videos online.

I got it removed. It was really painful, so I put off getting the other three removed. Hehehe.

No water, eh? Well, French people don't shower either. :meanie:

I love this organic spring mix salad stuff. I go through a pound every 3 days. And my favorite dressing is a mixture of hummus, sweet mustard, and raspberry vinegrette.

So have you called? I got my report today. Curse my perfect credit history! I got a lot in unsubbed loans, which also means very little unmet need.

Ok, upon further investigation, I found that your EFC is part of the amount of subsidized loan you can get:
http://studentaid.ed.gov/students/p...e/2005-2006/english/general-financialneed.htm
If you got the max amount of subbed loan, then your EFC is very low to zero. I think that's why EFC didn't show up on the estimate.

I've been in and out of this thread for the past couple of months. I withdrew my application for Michigan recently, along with a very nice scholarship. Very hard to do, especially since I really liked the school and Ann Arbor. I just can't see myself working out of Cali, since I want to continue some of the things here that I can't do in Michigan and I want to stay near family. I really hope someone else gets those recruitment dollars (or spreads them out to ppl)!

Good luck everyone!

there is an exam that last day, but i've gotten some reassurance from the school that there is an official exam deferral policy, and my situation should qualify. that puts my mind at ease a little. i love michigan.

I was going to say, in the UofM blogs a student mentioned deferring two exams this year (one for a LGBTA event, the other for the Chicago AMSA conference). Doesn't sound like you'll have to worry about it.

They have the exams scheduled for us already? Cool- where's the schedule? Time to start studying! 😉

I love Michigan, too! I want to wear my "Michigan Medical" shirt every day. 😀

And dajimmer, if you can get that exam schedule, hook us up!

Major dilemma: Should I get the 30 gig or 60 gig video ipod? 60 is more expensive, but I'll be able to store my entire porn...err...music collection on it. 30 is $100 less, and I don't need to THAT much music with me everywhere. Are you willing to shell out that extra $100 for another 30 gigs? 😕

Hey all-

Quick question... so has anyone heard from the housing or transportation committees about next weekend? I got an email a little while ago about a survey, and haven't heard anything since. Want to make sure I'm not missing any emails.

MWGuy

Nothing here yet. I'd expect something this weekend, since these are med students putting it together. Unless they partied all week, and need to study for the flex-time quiz! 😀

well, the only way to even get the general academic calendar was to ask the office of student affairs, and the schedules aren't finalized until the sequences actually start. all they could tell me was that the last week before christmas is the dermatology sequence with the exam at the end, on friday. but, that could change.

I got an email about two days ago from student hosting. I was given my host contact information. That was it. Still don't know who is going to pick me up from the airport. What time is everyone arriving? I think I'll get there around 2.

Awww. 🙁 You were smart to go on the paid trip though. I would have done the same thing. It's just too bad they didn't make them both on the same weekend....

Those of you who are still in school and are attending second-look: Are you happy you'll be partying it up w/ Michigan students while all of our underclassmen friends will be taking that aweful beast that is the MCAT? I have 5+ close friends who are stressing every day about the MCAT, and a few have already started worrying about AMCAS. They don't like me so much right now :meanie: .

In other news, what in the world is a "suprise" lunch? We're taking bets, people. My guess is we'll be eating off the sterile tables in the surgical suites, using scalpels as knives. 😀

Anyone get a chance to go to the Chat today? I was at lab and couldn't get out in time. Any interesting info?

My guess is home-cooking from the med students.

I'll just load up on perfume, like the French.
Hopefully the boiler will be fixed soon. If not, I'll take a cold shower if I have to. Ahhhh, the sacrafices I make for Second Look. *sigh*

Someone's vandalized your house!! :wow: Sorry to hear that.
(Note to self: Be more discreet in the next stake-out at dajimmer's house.)

Hedgehogs are rather grumpy animals, so I'm pretty sure he minds most things in life. I'm pretty sure he's colorblind (he's nocturnal/diurnal), so he probably doesn't mind being blue, but perhaps the becoming blue. Don't worry, all non-toxic, ingestible dyes. I too wouldn't recommend this for cats, though.

He has many names. At first it was Spazzola, Italian for brush (Romans apparently used hedgehogs for hairbrushes). Now it's officially Smirnoff, yes after the Vodka, because when he gets mad he puts his front quills forward and it looks like he has one of those big Russian hats on. Mostly we just call him "the hog" or "pincushion," though.

Hey Q, it looks like there will be a few non-trads at the second look. And tempuratures in the 60's shouldn't be too bad 😉 .

Happydays: Yes, I think some drunks got bored playing beer pong and went around my neighborhood throwing the former legs of their table into people's windows. Luckily I rent, so the landlord foots the bill. But now I'll smell you if you're staking out my house again.

I just looked at the list too; the only ones I saw were Sail and almost_there. (Good thing Sail is coming; otherwise I'd be the oldest. :meanie: ) Temps in the 60s would be awesome. I actually have had to break down and run the air here; we've been getting temps in the mid-80s, which wouldn't be that bad except for the accompanying humidity. 😱

BTW, I have decided not to keep my pickup if I move up north. I checked the specs and it is definitely RWD. I've been doing some reading about driving in snow, and while people differ on how important/necessary it is to have AWD or 4WD versus FWD, pretty much everyone seems to agree that RWD is definitely a BAD thing for driving in snow. It sucks though; my truck is all paid off and it's in great condition. 🙁

Ugg, please don't do that. Perfume is a migraine trigger for me. 😱 I think the worst feeling in the world (for me anyway) is being stuck in an elevator with a woman who has literally bathed herself in perfume. Even if I try to hold my breath, I still get the migraine sometimes anyway....

You're right; I haven't seen Sail around lately either. Maybe he's just busy at work. Actually, this whole thread has been pretty quiet except for you, dajimmers, and me. 😛
