Another thing about being place on the hold list. I think they place everybody on the hold list who got an interview. It sux but in my 6 -7 years here, I have never heard of a post-interview straight up rejection. Why I don't know? They just let the students keep hoping, then dash their hopes in May when there is little they can do to improve their application.
 
Does anybody have any idea what kind of class/lab hours we're looking at with the new curriculum? I've seen last year's schedule, and it doesn't look bad, but it'll have to be completely different next year, with anatomy in that 7-week block. Are we going to have like 4 hours of lecture and 4 hours of lab every day, or what? I don't know how else all that material will be covered, but that's a lot of hours! Anybody know anything?
 
I think anatomy is going to run pretty much the whole day. They used to have a summer anatomy program that was 7 week also. They had lecture in the morning and lab in the afternoon. People got out at aorund 5:00.. but then ended up studying till around 10:00... but most people said they could take the weekends off... We also have a physician and society class so the first 7 weeks are going to be pretty busy... Plus, we have three tests in 6 weeks... so that doesn't allow for much free time <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

I posted this question on the class of 2006 U of MN site, but no answer yet and I kind of need to get a plane ticket.

We have exams August 30, a Friday. Anyone know from previous experience how long you are in class on exam days? Is it a shorter day because of the exam?

anyway, I'll ask some of the current MS-1s and find out. I'm actually meeting with Derek on Sat.
 
Thanks Oldman. You won't forget? I'm going out of town this weekend but will have to buy a plane ticket when I get back. I'm hoping the exams are generally in the morning and don't last 4 hours each. If I can get outta there by 4 or 5, things should check out. Thanks again.
 
Yeah, Beck is at the Wadsworth here in L.A. that night, the last show in his tour.

I'm missing the St. Paul performance August 8th - don't move 'til the 10th. But will manage to catch Seattle and Portland before school starts!

Well, I am still on the waitlist for U of M, stuck on #11, so I am probably going to go to Chicago Med since they start really soon. I really would have liked to go there. I actually talked to the Dean, and she said that there's really nothing she can do about my situation. So, I am going to keep my name on the list, and see what happens, but good luck to you all who is going to U of M.

i have a friend who got off the waitlist the day of orientation. That was a few years back.

i know some other people who are waitlisted.

Typical 1st year exam days start at 8 in the morning and run until noon. In anatomy the class will be divided in half. One section will take a 2 hr written exam while the other half takes the practical, then you swap. Histo is quite similiar. Other classes will just have a very long written, but basically nobody ever takes the full 4 hours in those classes.

I am also going to Sally's tomorrow for lunch. I'll be meeting 2 other people from our class.

Hey. Did any of y'all get your financial aid offers this weekend? I am confused. On mine it says aid offered is up to the cost of attendance (for fall and spring), but below that, it lists an EFC of like $23,000. It isn't real clear how much they're giving me, and I don't have $23,000. Anyone else have this experience? One of my friends (also class of 2006) had an EFC greater than the cost of attendance, so I don't even know what that number means. Any ideas?

i got mine over the weekend too.

it listed my parents contribution as 70K and then my contribution as 3k. i emailed valerie and she said the 70K was because the school assumes parents contribute, but in reality the medical school doesn't look at the family contribution.

"Actually, your Expected Parent Contribution is correct, but bear in
mind that our school does not look at the parent contribution in
determining your financial aid award. We consider you an independent
student. We would only look at parental income if we were determining
your eligibility for the Primary Care Loan."

Oldman... the U and many other schools offer graduate research assistantships (RAs)... Basically you work 195 a semester and you get $3000 in tuition a semester, all student service fees and health insurance for free that comes to about lets say $900. Plus you get an hourly wage at about $13.13. So if you do the math you end up getting paid around $29 an hour to work. Have to do a min of 195 hours to get any benefit and can't work more. In grad school you can work 390 hr a semester, but med school limits it to 195 which is about 10 hours a week. You can really do anything where there is a posting or you can contact professors and see if they would be interested in giving you a RA. It can be research in a med lab, ta undergrad or grad class, community positions are also available. Go to <a href="http://www.umn.edu/ohr.." target="_blank">www.umn.edu/ohr..</a> job center... and look under graduate assistantships to see some current positions. It comes down to working about 10 hours, some of them are really slacker positions :clap: :clap: That takes couple hours a week and you can log 10 🙂 This works for the community service projects. But it saves about $11,000 a year. Which isn't that bad 😀

Hey all - I'm an epi MPH student in the U's School of Public Health and am currently applying. I hold an RA and basically figured about the same math as you...except that when I got my first paycheck, I found out I was being paid close to $20/hour *plus* my tuition benefits and all. The $13.11/hour is the BOTTOM of the pay range, as it turns out. I happen to have about 4 years of relevant research experience, as many of you probably do. So, you may end up getting paid much more than the bottom $13.11/hour.
 
question for ya U of Mers....any idea how the U of M "likes" grad students, particularly MPH peeps? It seems like there's always a few MPH students (usually epi) who go onto med at the U...anybody have an idea how much of an advantage my MPH will be? I'd prefer to get into the U of MN this time around (I applied two years ago, was put on hold forever, then finally rejected).

i have no idea how the mph factors into apps. i have heard that MN favors reapplicants as long as what dr. becker recommends is followed. otherwise i dunno 🙁

I'm an incoming first year, and I just finished my MPH in May (not from MN, though). I'd say that the MPH helped in getting me in to medical school. At least my interviewer at MN said that it was a strong point of my application. However, I think it really depends on the med school. Some med schools don't really care if you have an MPH. Some of my classmates had a hard time getting in to med school.

I've noticed that many of my classmates have high GPAs (>3.6). This is making me wonder if my high grad school GPA will be viewed by med schools as only so-so. Any idea if there's a lot or little grade inflation in MPH programs, and if/how med schools consider that?
 
I think grad school/MPH GPAs are a bit inflated, but I'm not sure how med schools consider that. I think (for me) the emphasis wasn't on the high GPA, but on what I've learned from public health school and how that's made me a bette candidate for med school.
 
Hey Oldman, did you request a wireless card from AHC? For free... have you gotten one or are you just purchasing your wireless card from the U? School is starting pretty soon!

About the MPH, I think it is definetly to your advantage. I know a lot of MPH students that have gotten accepted. I don't neccesarily think the GPA is going to be a huge factor because of the grade inflation. Hurts if you have a low GPA but doesn't help if you have a high one. But just the MPH will give you an added advantage. 🙂
 
i haven't picked it up yet. i believe they are free for medical students. can you say "elite" ? 🙂 it's good to get some sort of a bonus for once!

What's this "wireless card" you guys are talking about? What are they for, how did you hear about them, and how do you get one? Are they for wireless internet on campus or what? Sorry to be so clueles...!
 
I believe they are talking about an 802.11b wireless ethernet card - prolly a PCMCIA card to be exact (Personal Computer Manufactuers Can't Initiate Acronyms). So basically, this nice little card plugs into your laptop, and you can surf the web from wherever you want inside Moos (or wherever they set it up) - no wires needed.
