Hey, Oldman,

I'll be in the twin cities on the 10th. I can't believe how fast the summer went by!

are you going to the bbq? it's gonna be sponsored by AMSA! 🙂 free food etc. 🙂

go to the class of 2006 web site to see the info

I did some further researching, turns out the wireless cards aren't for free and the med school class rooms and Moos aren't covered 😡 😡 They used an old protocal called the Breeze which does not support the 802.11b standard protocol. So they gave free cards for the breeze protocal. But they are fazing this protocal out and getting the 802.11b protocal but there is no date to when this will be complete 😡 So in other words, there will be no connection in med school class rooms, biomed etc... unless there is a computer kiosk nearby. Techmart does sell the Orinoco Gold wireless card for $74 plus free shipping which is a pretty good deal. Go to techmart.umn.edu for more info. Most of campus is covered though 🙂 🙂 So it is all good I guess.

hey Hapydoc - where'd you get all this great info? Just a curious pub health guy wanting to get his surf on between classes.

the phasing out process might be slower than you think. when i get home i'll email the guy i communicated w/ prior regarding these wireless cards. i'll let you guys know what's happening.

I just found out that they are going to put the 802.11b protocal in about 2 weeks, it might take until september to be completely covered. So we are set! 🙂 The breeze system is pretty much out and they are collecting the free cards they gave out. The AHC wireless page has also been updated if you guys haven't noticed. Here is the link. They also have the a link to all the places covered witht the 802.11b protocal. Get the Orinoco gold wireless card, they suggest it works the best. Also don't expect it to be for free, it is only $74 bucks anyway.

74 bucks can buy some good viddles.

Thanks for the info Happydoc! Very helpful!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

this is what the guy said about the wireless network:

I have heard word that the AHC is to be set up for 802.11b access some
time in the next 2-3 weeks. This is barring any technical/logistical
problems etc. I have not heard of any firm plans to give wireless cards
to students, however it has been talked about among the Med School
Informatics/Tech Fee committee. The cost of these things are down now to
between $50-70 so are quite reasonable to purchase on your own. To check
out available 802.11b coverage and locations on campus, check out this
website: http://lighthouse.micro.umn.edu/kiosk/wireless.

not very definite...

not that I don't like you, Oldman, but isn't it about time you left the pre-allopathic forum and move into the medical student forum? I mean, you are in med school now. By the way, lets do lunch sometime if you can....you do still eat, don't you?

Just finished the secondary application!

Now I have to wait for an interview...

that's too bad.

it was nice while we had it.

speaking of which, i am now seeing those people in suits walking around. it's funny cause they are the only people in suits! they stand out like a sore thumb....oh wait...that was me a year ago.

well, I got my interview data - October 18th. Don't suppose any other SDNer will be there on the 18th?

Does anybody know if/where interview feedback.com went? Anybody have any tips? Are the interviews still low-pressure?

i'll probably there. just don't get my interviewer he was the opposite of low-pressure.

Oldman - yeah, you might be there, but not as an applicant!

Hey! I just got my first interview and its with UMinn. I was wondering if anyone could give me a few pointers on the interview (types of questions, format, maybe even the questions they asked you!). Oh yeah, does anyone know if the interview questions are the same every year? I'm guessing probably not. Ok..thanks in advance!

I'm interviewing on the 18th - when are you interviewing? Good luck! I see you're in LA...are you a Minnesotan, or are you one of the growing number of out of state applicants?

From what I've seen and heard (I interviewed at the U of MN two years ago) there really isn't a defined set of questions. The whole interview day is rather laidback and low pressure. To prepare I'm just reading over my app, reviewing the research I've done, and reading up a bit on who's interviewing me.

there is only 1 interview (for approx 1 hour), so it really depends on who you get. each interviewer gets to ask whatever they want. i had a very tough one. he asked about things in my transcript that i had forgotten about (describe characters in an english book i read freshman year).

Just got an interview invite from Uof MN! Any one going to be there on Nov 11th?

Congrads!

October 18th for me! Woo hoo!

At my MN interview on the 18th, I noticed that I was the only grad student, and one of only three (I think) to have already graduated from college. I remember there being about 20 people there that day. Is this a real trend towards fewer older applicants this year? Has anybody else noticed this? If so, does this mean I'll face a much greater chance of admission (since I'm one of a few, hopefully valued, grad students)?

AHHHH! I hate waiting!

I didn't interview Oct 18th, but I am also a grad student! I will be there Nov 11th though and will let you know how many other grad students there are with me.

As far as older students, many of my classmates have taken off some time from school. It's not an unusual thing so I don't think it helps or hurts you. The only advantage is having an opportunity to do things that someone straight out of undergrad would not be able to do.

I know some classmates who took time off to raise a family. Some did peace corps. Some of my friends went off to work in the business world. Some were physical therapists, physician assistants, and many other jobs.

Hi guys,

I'm about to go interview with University of Minnesota this Fri. I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions- I think I pmed a couple people just in case this thread was not being looked at anymore.

To prepare for my interview, I'm looking over my applicaiton. I interview with Dr. Paul Iaizzo. Aside from looking at my application, I'm just thinking about questions such as 'tellme about yourself' etc.

How was other people's interview at the school? What sorts of questions did the interviewer ask you? Is it a completely open-file interview? What's the best way to prepare for it? Anything else you can think of? Or how are people preparing for it?

Any of you interested in the MPH program?

I am going to UMN for an interview in December and wanted to know how the day was formatted and when it ended.

They mail you out a schedule. You could call and ask that one be emailed or mailed to you ahead of time. Some people interview in the morning and then do the group activities (presentation by various people, lunch, and tour); some people have an interview after lunch. I interviewed before the group stuff, and was done with the tour by 3:30.

Woo hoo! Dr. Becker (Dean of Admissions) called me today. I've been accepted to Minnesota!

Adcadet,
That's awesome!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations! I hope I do as well!
I know you said you would rather go to MN than GW. Are there any other schools you rather go to, or is MN you top choice?
Either way- it's great news! Congratualtions- and thank you for the PM and suggestions!

(what was your timeline, by the way- from interview to acceptance?)

Well, it's about as official as it get's - I'm going to the U of M. Funny - I changed my SDN sig before I turned in the offical letter of intent to the U.

Anyway, the turnaround time from interview to acceptance was October 18 to November 13th. The Director of Admissions called me.

Anyway, I'm starting a new Official U of M thread for the potential class of 2007. See ya'all there!

New thread -> http://www.studentdoctor.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51993

As soon as I figure out what that is next year, I'll come find your geriatric MS2 butt and kick some part of it's anatomy (I'll tell you what part as soon as I cover it in gross).

Oh, by the way, are you following the "Is med school harder than undergrad" thread? Just thought you might like to add your comments.
