OFFICIAL - USC Class of 2007!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey guys, i got the first packet from USC yesterday. as soon as i saw the paragraph on parking, i went to the website, but the permits are already all sold out. i called the transportation office today and they said students can park in Lot 9 and walk or take shuttle from there.

anybody with a better solution? i wish they would've told us to get permits back in April when they were first available. my fault for sitting on my ass all this time waiting for info.

upperclassmen, what did you do when you were first years?

I think I idd mention a while ago that anybody who knew they were coming should get parking right then. You might be able to buy a carpool permit, but I donno. Lot 9 is fine, there is a shuttle that goes back and forth a lot.

As for where to live, if you are interested in looking for a place to live, call (626)660-1116. That guys name is Harshad Buvia (Or some spelling) and he rents a lot of apartments in Monterrey Hills and other places. You'll see his name on all the plaques around here.

As far as where to look, you will get the Salerni Survival Guide, with lists of all the best places to live in about three weeks. They mailed out the last packet on Tuesday, and they are hoping to mail out the second packet right on July 1st or earlier. I started looking for a place to live right about now, and didn't have a problem. I moved in July 15th. I had some friends start the week before, and they still found a place in Monterrey Hills. Places in South Pas and Pasadena are a lot easier to find.

I got my roommate through a mutual friend. Most people got their roommate through the ad sheet that you get in the mail, or someone they knew from college (small %).

Also, Me and my roommate are looking for someone to live in our third room. You'll see the add soon.

Right now, we have picked the places we are going to go for the first 4 nights of school to party. We are still thinking about friday and staerday and the next week.

Something you guys want to do now, (Not sure if it was in the packet) is get you immunizations up to date. I still need to get my hep B done.

If you guys are bored and looking for stuff to read before school starts, if you want academic stuff, you can buy Moore and Agur clinical anatomy and read the first 50 pages (You will buy this book next year) For fun, I would recommend the book "Blind Eye" about a doctor who was a serial murderer and got away with so much stuff ebcause other doctors covered for him. Or you could learn Spanish, which you will have to probably do sometime in your life.

Do you need a permit for lot 9???

Is Netter's Anatomy a safe buy before school starts? If anyone is interested in looking of r a place email me at [email protected]

Sorry about the double post, but is anyone out there???

I'm still waitlisted and hoping to gain admission to USC. Just out of curiosity have they mentioned anything about the computer/laptop to be used? I have been accepted elsewhere but I want to ensure that I don't buy a pc whose requirements differ.

Hey all. Packet number 2 goes out tomorrow, with a ton of stuff in it. All of you guys on the waitlist, I might be able to tell you how many packets was sent out. But it will prolly be the best packet you guys get this year (in terms of fun information).

im applying to USC for 2004 and was wondering if anyone can tell me what your secondary essay topics asked. Thanks ppl and good luck in first year.

so what're y'all doing for parking? (and yes, jalby, i know we should've gotten it sooner but it's too late for that now) everything's sold out!
yeah, also, anyone find housing yet?

any information about the wait list is greatly appreciated. I've sent a couple of letters - is there anything else one might do? And is the class still overcommitted?

no housing....no parking...and i'm out of town for a couple weeks....clearly, I'm on top of it! 😉
🙁

Only one more month til you guys start showing up. So how many of you guys have figured out where you are going to live, etc????

One more month left! I'm officially in LA, living in Westwood until the end of August, currently looking for a place closer to school to move into. I got the survival guide and stuff in the mail, thanks to all those MS IIs! See you guys soon!

Thanks for the thread Jalby. How come we never got info about the free lot? I got two tickets before i even knew, btw dont make that mistake the meter readers are on top of it here.

I am looking forward to seeing all you MS1's soon.

Good Luck

That was a historical article. It had been in the guide for like 3-4 years, just b/c people liked it. It was removed solely b/c it didn't mention the free lot.

For all the rest of you guys, zbarnes here is featured on the last page with his son in the guide.

I am? Damn, I hope its a good pic.

I am actually conflicted as to where to live. Should I live on campus because it is so convenient or should I live in a more social area. The only reason on campus housing looks so appealing is because I worry about parking (there are no more permit applications being taken). Also can anyone shed some light into how financial aid works at USC? Thanks. Oh and I love the survival guide...it is very thorough and actually looks like someone took the extra effort to get a nice color cover and binder.

I def wouldn't recommend living on campus. The apartments arn't to nice and you feel like you don't have a real home. Besides, parking isn't a real big concern. There is lots of parking spaces, it's just the free and easy ones is a 15 minute walk or 5 minute shuttle ride away. (as you would read in the guide). And it wasn't really effort, it was $$$$$.

Ok hopefully by now you all have a place to live. and if not, no worries. i'm sure many 2nd years wouldn't mind taking you in for a week or two for you to find a place and there's bound to be fellow classmates looking for roomates.

So....

Who is gonna go to the welcome BBQ??
Actually when is it? I know we ms-2 will be in class it's no biggy to come out for some free lunch or whatever 🙂

See you all soon!

Have any MS1s done the telephone registration out there? Did you get tuition insurance? SOunds kind of ridiculous to me. I'm hoping to find a place down there sometime this week. Look forward to meeting you all soon

i would use web registration, its faster after you figure it out.

WHere is the online registration???

that $2800 is allotted to purchase a computer. Since my USC admissions materials have not yet arrived, and I have access to a deal which expires tonight, can anyone tell me anything about what is required/preferred? Or even what people have actually ended up needing? Thanks.

Get the deal. There is no real requirement, but I def would recommend getting the getting a PC laptop of some sort. But you really don't need to spend that much.

PS good choice

there'll be plenty of deals for computers even if this one expires. i didn't buy my computer till end of october and i was totally fine (infact my scores dropped b/c the computer!).

my advice is to wait a bit and see what you need when school starts. computer needs is different for all pple so you have to see for yourself. remember, it's a big investment.

oh yea, i got a laptop 2.4ghz, 512mb ram, 40gb;5200rpm-HDD, 15in-tft, dvd/cdrw for under $1400, half of the 2.8k allotted. and this was last year. I think you can get something more powerful and for around 1k. i'd wait and see what you really need.

I received a phone call from a real estate agent about this property and thought I'd share.

Monterey Hills

hey everyone
I was wondering what lenders you guys are going with? I know some people are looking at medpreferred - anything else?

I've been sitting on pins and needles for the past 2 months and finally I got THE call from Dr. Quinn today morning. At first when she asked to speak with me I thought it must be one of those pesky telemarketers so I thought of telling her that I'm not interested in anything she's selling but held back thankfully....
She said there's an opening in the class and she'll be glad if I took it. Of course I was ecstatic and accepted the offer in a heartbeat. So I just want to say that patience and perseverance is key when waiting to hear from your top choice school. I hope those of you still on the wait-list get to hear the good news soon.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to meeting my future classmates. By the way is there anything in the orientation packet I should know about ASAP? Any input will be greatly appreciated.

PS. Jalby thanks for the words of advice...I owe my acceptance partly to your help.

Congrats Peter. Glad to see that you will be joining us next year. The only advice I could give right now is to see if you can make it to student affairs and pick up your first couple of packets from them directly.

I hear that joining orgs like ama, amsa, etc. you sometimes receive gifts like Netter's Anatomy. Does anyone know if there is any truth to that? I don't want to buy one and then get one free...Also, does anyone know good places to live in PAs, S. Pas and MH. Thanks in advance. Oh, and who is going on the camping trip???

i remember one of the groups did this, so you could do this no problem.

The best way to find housing without paying westsiderentals is to drive around those areas and go to open houses and write down numbers.

AMA gives you a free Medical Dictionary and pocket bates, good discounts on car insurance and DSL, a thermos, 4 year subscription to JAMA, and a free trip to sacramento later in the year. I'd def recommend joining this club 😉

AMSA gives you a free Netter.

Salerni gives you all kind of free stuff (Another club you def should join) 😉

Do you think it is silly to get an apartment near campus when my parents live like 21 miles away and are willing to hook me up with a car? I guess I would save a little over 10k, but is having an apartment that much cooler and convenient? Anyone get an apartment even though they lived pretty close to campus? Thanks.

i didn't read this year's salerni guide, but the old one's were unbiased and essentially not very helpful for making a decision. the following is being pitched as absolute truth:

living
1. don't live on the health science campus...everyone who's done so gets so twisted they start to like it there
2. monterey hills is fine if you like not having anything to do and a quiet place to study; if you start ditching class and just study there on weekdays...you could swear that it's not in los angeles; parking is stupidly organized (one car behind another) but there's free parking on the street
3. a great option is a luxury apartment downtown (Promenade Towers) which cost about the same as a condo in monterey hills...and the drive to campus is equal distance; you also get a private gym, pool, and a quick walk to the Disney Concert Hall that will open this fall; parking is done well here

books
1. don't buy books. wait till you meet with your big sib or some upperclassmen to recommend the stuff you actually will need; your big sib could probably give/sell you books for a sweet discount...or you can do the half.com thing; avoid the bookstore unless absolutely necessary
2. definitely don't buy netter because it's free when you sign up for AMSA

parking at school
1. usc is gonna screw you like no tomorrow; there is a free lot that is a 10-15 min walk from the classrooms; so $3XX vs. excercise every morning; i paid for lot 70 and the only other one i'd pay for is Biggy; lot 71 is a rip off, you might as well walk from the free lot

etiquette
1. don't show up to the university park campus gym in scrubs...only the dental students do that and it's only good for a few laughs; also, don't wear scrubs around town...it makes you look like a tool and reflects poorly on all the rest of us
2. don't be a gunner; most people will give you respect to your face and say stupid crap like "oh, you're so smart"...but everybody really hates you because no one wants to work with an anal SOB; it's possible to be a hardworking student and do well without appearing to be an ultra-competitive jackass; you're in friggin' SoCal, just relax

selling out
1. USC has classically been a conservative institution as a whole, but recently the liberals have really taken over education here; you're going to be drowned in tree-hugging B.S. for the next four years...brace yourself; do what you need to do to keep these people out of your hair, but retain faith in the principles you know to be true; i promise you, the silent majority is still strong at USC

good luck.

Wow. That is as far from my experience as possible. We have one dean of students who is openly out of the closet and we had a forum on abortion where the pro-choice lady had a standing ovation. Wait. I'm drunk and just reread what this person wrote. Yeah, he's right, except for the part about the silent majority. The majority of the students are liberal people (as is most californians) and actually care about people less fortunate than them.

Oh yeah, Wierdo. There were a lot of peopl eliving at home in my class. Most of them were within 10 minutes of class. Why don't you check out the living places and see if it is worth moving, but I think your best place is at home.

My mom lives really close to campus but I am definitely gonna get an apartment. It's a personal thing - will you go crazy living at home? I would...

let's skip the liberal vs. conservative debate for everyone else's sake...i just want the newbies to know that despite the fact that many people in administration are liberal, the people with real power are stilll conservative. that includes the senior deans and up (e.g. president of the entire university). it may appear that most students at USC are liberal...but that's only because they make a lot of noise. like the loud girl that has nothing to say, don't let it fool you.

as for the self-righteous jab...let me remind you that just about everyone in the medical track (on both sides of the politic fence) has an interest in helping the less fortunate. please get over yourself.
