Did you guys get the packet Eva said she was going to send us "shortly after May 1?" Containing financial, housing, and other info?

I'll MSG u the e-mail address he has listed on the school directory. The first year is definately very laid back compared to other schools. We just finished our first week of summer trimester and it's very different. We've got lab four days a week in addition to our normal PBL, so enjoy the first year as much as you can!

hey blumnday thanks for answering our questions.

So what is the orientation like? Why is it a week long?

What is dental lab work about? Dentures?

So what's the student-body atmosphere like? One big happy family like SDN?

Also I think another usc dental student on SDN said that usc scored 49th on part II and 10-15 students didn't get to take part I because they weren't prepared. What's up with that?

I wish August was here already. I'm ready to focus and get started.

(I'm also curious to see how the football program will turn out this year. SC' lost too many heisman trophy winners ;) )

Hey Briansle

I felt that orientation is waaaay too stretched out. Last year it was actually two weeks and I believe it could have been compressed into a few days. You have a few lectures on the actual PBL process and the research behind (and you have homework to do), a sample PBL case, and lectures on infection control, financial aid, etc...

Freshmen year dental lab is Tooth Morphology with Dr. Green. It meets once a week for 4 hours and you'll basically learn how to wax up all the teeth. The summer after your first year you'll have labs in occlusion, restorative dentistry, and perio. Throughout the year you'll also have different rotations in radiology, diagnosis, and other clinical subjects.

As for the boards, I haven't heard anything about part I or part II. I know a few seniors that just graduated, so I can ask them when I see them.

And I hope the football team is great this year. I haven't had time to pay any attention to who they're recruiting, but I'm still planning on going to the games next year.

Hi Blumnday,

I read from another thread that USC had recently matched (most recent graduating class) 11 students into orthodontics and 7 students in OMFS.

Is this true?

Can anyone else confirm this?

I heard something different when I was there for my interview.

I'm not sure if that's the exact number, but I do know there were more than 10 matches. I think this year was the highest they've had so far.

Blumnday,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Just to confirm, your saying that "more than 10 matches" were made with respect to ortho? (and not every specialty field combined)

I'm not sure if it was 10 in ortho. I know there were several in ortho, but not how many.

No worries, USC had the best projected recruiting class in the nation coming in for this next year. They are stacked every year. I heard that all sport passes are something like 135$, is that true?

Hello all! Very excited to get started in the fall. I'm getting pretty sick of all this undergrade stuff. I just want to jump into everything. Although I'm probably going to think differently once we get started. Go USC Class of 2010! By the way where do all of you plan to live?

USC is one of my top choice next year when i'm applyinig. bluminday can you elaborate on why first year is more easier than second year. How is first year laid back.

Since it's PBL, you only have school 3 days a week for about 5 hours. You will also have a 4 hour morphology lab 1 day a week. Occasionally throughout the semester you'll have various rotations. Since you only meet for ~20 hours a week you have a lot of free time. At least part of that time should be spent studying (the PBL cases generally cover broad topics that you can study), but most people just spend it at the beach or partying. Nobody will really make you study and you only have tests twice during the semester. It's really up to the person to determine how much time you want to spend studying during your first year.

Next deposit is in July and it's refundable for $1500.

Susy: you're so good, I was totally procrastinating about doing scholarship stuff for usc, and in the end never did them. Really lucky for me that I got into my dream school. I think you still got a shot, keep your fingers crossed! :luck:

Downtown LA has really nice brand new apartments...it's suppose to be the next Manhattan or something...but when the sun goes down the bums, drug dealers, and prostitutes come out at night.....people strongly encourage you not to leave your home at night...so basically you'll be a prisoner in your home......me on the other hand...I'm pretty sure I'll be living in Century City....you should try places in west LA.....everywhere else has something wrong with it......if you want somewhere safe you should consider living at least 15-20 minutes away from campus....i know it sucks!!!

I finally got in! I currently live 25 minutes away from USC. I own my own condo, but I have realized that it would not be within my budget to maintain my place, even if I got a roommate. It would be awesome if a few responsible people got together and invested in a home. Has anyone considered doing this? Instead of paying for an apartment, you could pay for a portion of a home that you and your other classmates own. While in dental school, you would be building equity and come out with some money at the end of the four years.

I currently live in a condo with my older brother near Vermont and Wilshire. The drive to school with traffic is about 10-15 minutes and the area here isn't as bad as downtown LA.

Heeey, everyone!
I just went up to L.A. this weekend and I was really overwhelmed and still have no idea where I want to live. Marina del Rey seems like a nice area, but it also seems like it will be hard to find a nice place for just one person. Anyone interested in getting an apartment or something? I want to live in a really nice place and it seems like the best way to do that is to get more people in on it! And I'm really excited for August!!!

i used to live in playa del rey which is right next to marina del rey and i have friends that also live in mdr...when i lived there we had a three bedroom really nice place and payed 700 each excluding utilities...both of those cities are really nice to live in but just know that it will take you 30min-1hr each way depending on traffic...just thought id give you some helpful info.

p.s. those people that dont have a pic of themselves for their avatar put a pic of yourself so we can start associating names with faces.
