I've sort of given up hope, myself. I would love to go to Wayne, but right now I guess I will have to be satisfied with being Stringer Bell, D.O. instead of Stringer Bell, M.D.

I just withdrew from Wayne State. Good luck to those still waiting to hear!

wayne doesnt start taking ppl off waitlist til when...may 15, or june 1?

This is my only acceptance. It is also approximately $30K (total) more expensive than all other US schools I'm waitlisted at. I just got back from the bank and we've concluded that it's not financially feasible without putting my parents through serious financial strain - and medical school is not worth this, especially not Wayne State.

I spent close to $10K this application cycle - I guess I should have looked into it more before being so eager to apply to American schools. I feel like total crap right now, with the possibility that I will not being going to med school this fall.

Well, at least Dartmouth has some financial aid for international students....anyway, I've withdrawn from Wayne State. Good luck to the OOSers/Canadians on the WList.

Really sorry to hear that man. That really sucks. I really hope things work out with you at Dartmouth. 👍

With all of these people withdrawing, no one has heard anything from Wayne State in terms of movement? I would think they would start accepting people off the alternate list by now if they did not overaccept.

I am thinking they are waiting until May 15th before accepting people off the alternate list. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I feel terrible for you. We interviewed on the same date, right? Good luck with Dartmouth...I'm assuming this means that you're on the waitlist there? I hope things work out for you, because obviously you deserve to go to med school (as you were accepted) and hopefully there is another school that will feel the same way.

I think you're probably right.
I'm sure they made a number of offers on April 25, and some of those people will have decisions to make on May 15. (Though, I would imagine with interviews being that late, then perhaps they won't have other choices?) But in any case, people are going to take their time to make a decision and I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a decision. I would anticipate early June before knowing. Heck, if things go true to form, they'll probably have the waitlist decisions on the last Wednesday of the month (post-ADCOM meeting), and this time they'll call us instead of us calling them!

I was told by an interviewer that they do no re-review applicants who are placed on the alternate list during the committee meetings after the initial decision has been made. Therefore, once you are on the list, you remain at your spot until you are accepted.

That would exaplain why they say not to submit additional material.

So the proverbial ranked waitlist does exist, then, and we're all numbers that are going to be picked, one by one? If this is the case, then I really wish I knew what number I am. :/

Exactly, but they will not tell us our position, which I still do not understand.

Where's a hacker when you need one?

so is there no point in sending them a letter before may 15 updating them on activities, grades, and such?

From what I was told there isn't, but it wouldn't negatively effect you... so I would say do it anyway!

does anyone know if you can drop in rank on the waitlist? for example, i interviewed and was waitlisted in january, so is there a chance that people interviewing after me can be placed higher on the waitlist?

I wanna know this too. Also, are the ranks on the waitlist based on all the people on the list or do they rank you according to the date/time you interviewed?

I have no idea. I'd call and ask. They were pretty open, minus the "where do I stand exactly" part.

I called wayne state today and got some really helpful information from them regarding the alternate list (which I am on).

1) There are just a little over 200 people on the list right now--this surprised me, as I thought it would be quite a few more.

2) After May 15, they will reject some on the alternate list who simply don't have a chance of getting off.

3) Admissions, as in all schools, overaccepted for the class--the class is currently full. The movement in the next month can vary anywhere from 0 to 100 people.

4) There is only one alternate list (as opposed to an in-state and out-of-state ones) We are ranked on a scale to 3.0 and this number is set in stone. I tried leaving my name and saying I was still interested and was told literally that's not gonna help--the files are in a drawer with their score and ranked.

So here's to hoping that everybody and their brother drops from wayne!!! :luck:

Thank you for this information. I really think they should tell us our rank. I don't know why they wouldn't, especially since it is set in stone.

Thanks for the info. Nice to have some of the mystery about Wayne State admissions office dispelled...except for the whole rank thing. 👎

then this (200 ppl) doesn't go along with the idea that wayne state puts most people on the alternate list.

btw, good info!

now, the question is, should I still study for an mcat retake in light of this news?😕

I guess it's time for us to pray a lot..:luck:

and I mean pray really really hard!

agreed...this info contradicted some percentages earlier about how many people are accepted/rejected/waitlisted after interview.

i have to assume this woman was correct. the percentages were hearsay earlier and this was literally the secretary of the admissions office.

Barbara Cotter I'm guessing.

If the waitlist only runs to 200, and they don't waitlist everyone post-interview, then this is good news. (I had gotten the feeling that there were no post-interview rejections. I'm glad this was just a feeling.)

Here's to hoping that the waitlist is indeed only 200 deep, and that it moves at around 100! Then we'd at least have a 25% chance. 😉

agreed. it really suprised me that there are only that many on the alternate list. I'm sure 100 is as likely as 0 getting off. As I said before, last year hardly anybody got off the list. According to my advisor, who referenced some sort of book he had on the subject, Wayne typically takes 40-50 off the list.

So, in order for me to get in to Wayne State, 199 other people on the waitlist needs to be accepted elsewhere at a cheaper and better school...that should be easy enough.

(bump)

I think I could live with 40-50. I think the rest of us on SDN should pull for a "Wayne State University School of Medicine Extension" where the other 150 of us on the Waitlist can go to a Wayne secondary campus or something. 🙂

(Just go ahead and accept me already, jeez)

this thread is starting to remind me of "we have evidence that iraq has weapons of mass destruction" and then later saying that the evidence was incorrect.

edit: what we need at wayne state is a regime change (aka change of undemocratic/dictator like adcoms).

I would agree. I hate to bash the school, but their administration (including the dean of admissions) is very unprofessional and rude. I am not going to cite specific examples, but I have had several unfortunate experiences during this application cycle (and my previous one). It really is a shame, though... I hear so many great things about the instruction and quality of the education.

Yes. Start studying. I am. 😡

I have been on Wayne States waitlist two years now.

It was my impression for both of those past years that there was very little waitlist movement. But there being only 200 on the waitlist makes me feel a little better. Not much though. I am basically assuming I got rejected, I just won't get the letter until the first week of September like last year. So it will be the filling out the old AMCAS this weekend for me.

*counts her pennies, hopes she has enough to apply to 30 schools*

That waitlist info is good to know though. Since I had always thought they community built, and I would have to wait for a in-state non-traditional to drop. So, I myself am actually happy they don't do that. Though becoming a number sucks. 👎

Good luck everyone, hopefully there is more movement this year. :luck:

No filling out the AMCAS again for me. As much as I'd like to go to an M.D. school, I'm just fine with going to a D.O. school (at which I have been accepted.) Still want to go to Wayne, but I'm not going to hold my breath for it.

And the waitlist info is indeed encouraging...and I don't mind being a number on a waitlist if it's a nice, single-digit number. 😉 (Or, say, a 2.9 out of that 3.0 index.)

i'll be done re-reviewing the BS and PS sections by may 15. and then practice tests.

how will wayne notify you if, and this is a huge if you are accepted off of the waitlist? is it true that they call you and if you don't answer they go to the next person, because that would suck. 🙄

it should also be noted that a lot of people have the same score on that 3.0 scale. So while it won't be exactly "waiting for somebody who matches you exactly to drop out", they may pick a "hispanic female OOS" who has a 2.9 if that's hte person who dropped as opposed to a "white male in-state" with the same score.

Shuntster, if you don't get in, I don't know how I possibly can. We have the same MCAT scores, and my GPA isn't as good as yours. It's funny because everything I hear about shifts my opinion back and forth as far as my impression of my chances.

This is all so very tiring. 🙁

W00t...500th post here.

Oh yeah, waiting sucks and all that. 🙂
