***Official Wayne State Application Thread***

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
well we have 2 withdraws that I personally know of... the question though is how many spots will open up, since wayne accepts more people than there are spots.

woah.... have fun at Jefferson 😛 😉

soooo, who's looking forward to the big day tomorrow. i have a feeling at least 50 people are going to withdraw.

I hope you're right about that one.
I would probably need like 150 people to withdraw, to feel safe. :/

do we call in or anything tomorrow?

Called Wayne today, no one has been taken off the waitlist today.

I bet the movement will happen over the next week...there's probably a lot of withdrawing going on right now.....right?

Let's hope so.

Let's go on the offense on SDN, since a lot of people ask, Wayne or School X, we will recommend School X with FORCE.

GujuMD,

I didn't ask about the next meeting.

The committee doesn't meet on waitlisted applications to my knowledge...we're all pre-ranked from here on out.

There's someone on this thread wanting to know if s/he should choose Toledo over WSU. Go get'em!

Also, take a few to speak on WSU's behalf on this issue.

Good luck to you all!

i suggested this tactic a long time ago, since around february. hopefully, it'll help even more now.

Yeah!
Inside_edition and I have been strong proponents of students choosing Michigan State CHM for a while now. 🙂

(Go Spartans! PBL rules! Best in Family Med! East Lansing is a great place to live!)

I'll be withdrawing shortly. I hope you guys get in! I was waiting for Wayne for a long time, but I guess they didn't want me. Oh well!

Congrats HH... you seemed more of an MSU type of person anyways 👍

UMP, what's an MSU type of person?
And can you please label me a Wayne type of person, and let the ADCOM know about it? 🙂

Just another suggestion guys... have people go to other schools rather than UMich, the more their waitlist moves, the more Wayne State's will move 👍 (I think I saw a few of you doing that already)

I think an MSU person is more innocent and thin-skinned... that's the only thing I can describe it as... You have to have a certain personality to want to be in Detroit 😉

I think this is called trickle-down waitlist movement.
Or perhaps...6 degrees of Waitlist Movement. 🙂

yeah, wayne needs to see me as a detroit kinda person too!
UMP, throw in a recommendation for me.

Bwhahahahhahaahahah
👍
That's the most laughs I've had during this application process.

oh wow... I was going to make a crack at that line, but thought against it... but that pic is priceless

thanks, I think I will. I figured someone from Albion had to go somewhere besides wayne. (though picking a school the same weekend that you graduate doesn't make a decision easy).

what was the biggest reason? Although I think you just wanted to go to Jefferson in your gut, and were just looking for excuses to not stay in michigan...

Hey all, quick question about waitlists. Are we supposed to call them for notification? Or do they call us/send a letter? I'm just wondering if there's something I jshould be doing here. On a side note, I heard from a friend who was waitlisted last year that people didn't get notified until June 1 if they were taken off the waitlist. I don't know how accurate that date is- has anyone else heard anything? Thanks!

can we figure out our rank in the waitlist, i know about the 0-3 scale but can we find out what our "score" is on that 0-3 scale?

I e-mailed the admissions committee and they wrote something along the lines of "The committee does not anticipate making any offer any time soon."

So, yeah...June 1 sounds about right.

June 1st....i guess i'll be counting the days.

Well, then, we'll all be keeping an eye out for June 1st.
However (and this is likely to happen, anyway), as soon as any one of us receives an offer, I ask you to post it on this thread, immediately. With so many of us waiting, I'll bet that we'd all like to know when the movement starts.

That way we can start obsessively checking our e-mail and mailboxes, and jumping every time our cell phones ring.

(Yes, I know that sounds terrible...but whatever the outcome, I'd rather know than not-know.)

Do we have a pact? 🙂

Is ink okay or will I need to sign in blood?

sounds fine with me..
are we supposed to be bothering them, showing interest?

I wrote (separate) LOI's to both the associate dean for admissions and to my interviewer, and one of my professors is going to write an "update" LOR for me. (Which reads "Please take him from the waitlist.") Other than that, there's not really much I think I can do - calling them every week isn't going to help, IMHO. Earlier in this thread, it says that we've all been scored on a 3.0 scale, anyway, which appears to be written in stone, and I don't think we're going to be able to do much to change that.

the only thing we can do is wait and pray that they have enough spots open to take us in.

any guess on how many ppl withdrew?

any guess on how many ppl withdrew?

7 SDN'ers have withdrawn according to the "Acceptance Withdrawal Thread." Of course, those withdrawals may have occurred during any time, and may have already been filled during subsequent ADCOM meetings. I don't think there's any way of knowing this number until all is said and done.

We won't know anything for sure until they meet, which could be the first week of june, or late may.....even then they may not tell us how many withdrew.

Speaking of LOI's, the one I wrote just stops short of saying that I want to be a gentle lover to Wayne State (if given the opportunity).

In the past it has been my experience that they do not start notifying people until the beginning of June. Why this is, I can not say.

But I feel a horrible dread that this year will be like any of the last years, and very little movement will occur. 🙁

Shuntster, if you don't get in, I don't know how I possibly can. We have the same MCAT scores, and my GPA isn't as good as yours. It's funny because everything I hear about shifts my opinion back and forth as far as my impression of my chances.

This is all so very tiring. 🙁

Next year, I will open up my search to DO schools because I feel they are in-line with my philosophy, and I believe that any "stigma" against them is just a self-perpetuating phenomena.

And also I will make a very strong argument against my parents who don't understand why I have to apply to so many schools, and why I can't pick like 3 or maybe 4 I really want to go to. 🙄

But yeah, it seems at Wayne they care a bit more about uGPA then about MCAT scores, which sucks in our cases, because our scores rock.

I wish that was the case. Got a 3.75 ugrad and 35 mcat still WL at wayne. 👎

lol. I want to attribute it to my lackluster interview there. It was the day after interviewing at a top 20 school and as everyone knows wayne's interview day leaves a lot to be desired. They also kept me waiting 1 hr past my scheduled time before my interviewer came to get me. I guess I wasn't as enthused as I could've been. 😳

I can guarantee that it's not enthusiasm that they are looking for in the interview. Otherwise, I would'a been in like Flynn a long time ago.

I have a sneaky feeling that they put judgments on some of the answers to the questions they ask.

Ok, this time I didn't get asked the "What will you do if you don't get in this year" question, even though I had a really great answer prepared for them this time.

But I think maybe they somehow judge me incorrectly when I say that biochem is my favorite subject. Many clinical people feel their biochem education is worthless, while Dr. Liberman (The main lecturer for 1st Year Biochem at University of Cincinnati) makes a convincing argument against that in many of the clinical correlations. And medicine is moving in the direction of individualized treatments, based on genotype.

For example long QT syndrome for instance, has many different causes the most prevalent is acquired from drugs. However, there could be gain of function, or loss of function mutations in the sodium channel, the potassium channel or the ryanodine receptor within cardiac myocytes that lead to the long QT syndrome. *ends ramble*

Anyway, I just get the feeling that I get pigeon holed into the idea that they feel I would be better suited as a researcher, or something, when I know those are not the careers for me. Though I don't know for sure. Last year I heard tale that the Assistant Dean of Admissions would go over the weaknesses in your application, after the application period was over, but I did not investigate it because I had already become busy taking my 'medical school' courses down in Cincinnati.

How do others feel on the idea that they draw conclusions from some of the questions like "So what was your Highschool experience like" or "What is your favorite subject" and blah blah blah.

I know if I was an excellent interviewee I would be able to expertly be bring the question back to why I would be the most awesomest doctor ever, but I have trouble being in-modest enough to do that. 😉
