Does anyone know if we have to submit our final grades from this semester and what the process is to do that?

I'm not the best to answer as the only time I bought a pass was in the summer for the business minor. I think the ones for the next school year will go on sale in July

Is anyone getting their rabies vaccine ahead of time? Every place I have looked into charges nearly 350 for each dose of it, and that is just crazy. I was thinking about waiting until we start school to get mine, and pay for it with loans when that comes time. Are we required to have it before we come to class?

We weren't required to have it until the first day of spring semester. It seemed like most of my classmates got it done sometime during fall semester. Do shop around a bit for pricing, and if you have insurance, check with your provider to see if they might cover at least some part of the cost.

I'm not sure what your health insurance status is, but if get the student health insurance coverage, it covers half the cost of the rabies vaccines. For the whole series of doses I paid a total of ~$550

I went ahead and got my rabies vaccine last summer because I wanted to work with rabie vector animals at the wildlife hospital. I received mine at the little clinic in the Kroger's in Dublin OH. It was the cheapest place that I could find. I had to call and put money up front before they would order the complete series. I believe they were about 350 a peice. You can also get them at the health department in Dublin for about the same price....the cost of the vaccine was cheaper but you had to pay a fee for the nurse to administer it though (at least I think thats what they said). Those were the 2 cheapest places that I found if you have to pay out of pocket. Some health insurances will pay for them if you get written verification that you need it but many won't.

As long as you budget for it with your loan money, that would work. I unfortunately didn't know it was required by spring semester and therefore didn't budget for such a massive bill. Thankfully I have student health insurance and it cost me $550 total, so not as bad but still a hit to the budget.

wow this is so cheap. i went to jefferson here in philly and it wad 1200 for each dose , the worst was that my insurance covers the rabies vaccine if its done as an in office treatment but they wanted me to go the attached pharmacy and pick up the vaccine myself. currently looking for cheaper places but i heard walgreens has it here as well

Does anyone think having the student health insurance is beneficial? I am on my Dad's insurance plan and am thinking on just staying on that to avoid paying the extra costs out of pocket. My insurance however does not cover the rabies vaccine

If you're not personally paying to be on your dad's insurance and he's not paying a ton to keep you on, it would likely be cost prohibitive for you to switch. While the student insurance is decent and comprehensive, it is about $2600 for the year plus co-pays, prescriptions, deductible, etc. You need to find out how much the rabies vaccine will cost you out of pocket to determine if that's worth it. You also need to check with your dad's insurance (if you're not from the Columbus area) and make sure you have access to physicians, specialists, urgent cares, etc. that are considered in network.

Also, OSU offers a supplemental plan called WilceCare if you have an insurance plan that is lacking in some way. I don't remember if it covers vaccinations or not, but that's something to consider if you're shopping around for a more affordable price on the rabies vax.

I don't believe my dad pays a lot. I would stay on his but I am in a predicament. He lives in Michigan and I live in Ohio. His insurance is a small company that is only located in Michigan. I have been having issues of finding health care facilities that accept my insurance. I don't necessarily want to pay that much extra to be on OSU's insurance plan, but if I have access to more health care facilities, and can actually use my insurance successfully then that may be my only option. I am just worried that my insurance won't be accepted (the plan through my dad) and that if something serious happens then that won't be good if it isn't accepted.

If it's a really small regional plan, you're probably SOL on keeping your cheaper parent provided option. Before you make your decision though, try to find a provider directory and get the details about how out of network care is dealt with. Some plans will still pay something if there are no in network providers in your area. If you still get some benefits from it, that is where the supplemental plan could help you out and fill in whatever gaps exist in your coverage. That would be cheaper than purchasing the student health insurance.

How much are you guys requesting for the direct plus ? pr are you guys requesting anything. I forget whether that is the lower interest loan or..?

I wouldn't request anything yet. You will get a determined amount of money from the direct plus loan, and once school starts you can request what you need out of that pool of money. I usually try to wait as long as possible before I request money from the direct plus loan since the interest rates from that loan are much higher than that of the federal subsidized loans. You guys will get plenty of instruction during orientation and the first couple of weeks of class about loans, how to request more money ect.

I agree with @VetPubHEpi . Wait to take out any of the Plus loans if you can (if you're out of state that might be more difficult to avoid your first year). You can take that loan out at almost anytime during the aid year in which it's offered. The money also comes through pretty quickly (in grad school I used my GradPLUS loan one year to finance research abroad and I received my money within two weeks of submitting the paperwork).

The lower interest loan that was discussed is the HPSL which you may or may not have gotten in your financial aid package this weekend.

Unfortunately though, if you're OOS, you need a large chunk of money from the gradplus loan to pay for tuition too. Then, on top of that, you'll have to use that loan for living expenses too (unless you have a ton set aside that is available for use and can be used when gaining residency).

yeah it says my grad plus eligibility is 23,585
my total before that in financial aid is 69250.00 which is below the oos tuition, i believe i think its around 70k and total cost of attendance is 93k) so im probably going to have to take out most of it.

the one good thing is that i have a 25k scholarship which cuts down on how much i have to pay back .

Does anyone have any experience with using money from a pre-paid trust for tuition? I am in the process of gaining in-state residency and I don't know if using a trust would mess up the whole independency status even though I am the beneficiary of the funds. I know I would have to probably run it past residency/financial aid but I was just wondering if someone out of state has been through something similar.

I have no experience with this but as a professional student you are considered independent for federal financial aid.

I haven't gotten anything either.. I was debating on sending an email but they technically still have today to send it- so I was going to wait until Monday to email them about it.

Apparently I didn't look close enough at the hours for the fingerprinting. I was thinking about taking off work early and doing it on Monday (the HR office is up the road from my work). Damn it.

Have you guys all got the fingerprinting stuff in the mail? I still haven't...

i haven't gotten any thing in the mail or an email. I'm oos too so i want to have plenty of time to do it and mail it back.
Do you think I should email them?

You probably should, I received mine back home in CA almost 2 weeks ago.

FYI if you haven't gotten it, definitely check with them...they originally sent mine to my address from the apartment I was living in before I graduated.

So after having interviews, did you get a sense that OSU does look at all 4 (or however many you might have) recommendations even though you're only allowed to list 3? How did you handle this restriction? Did you talk about the extra ones in the interview?
