Congratulations to those accepted. Ohio state is ranked 5th in the nation and has many quite famous faculties. So you should be very proud.
I came here partly because of the high ranking, partly because the ability to get in-state tuition, and mostly because Heather and other staff made me feel that they really wanted me to come here. (unlike Michigan which had a snobby "you should thank us" attitude)
I'm a P3, so I've been through the best and the worst of the times. First year won't be too hard especially for those of you who has an undergrad degree in natural sciences, but brace yourself for the 2nd year.
A primer:
(1) South campus is probably the best local to rent. Between 7-9th street and west of High street. Graduate dorm is available in Neil dorm, very close but about $100/month more expensive than what you can get renting off campus.
(2) on campus parking is expensive, about $600 a year. I say save that money and rent within walking distance instead. Some apartments have their own parking spaces. Those that don't can get city street parking permit for $25 a year.
(3) don't buy text books in your P1 year. You won't need it. All class slides/notes will be posted online or available for purchase.
(4) have a car. You will be required to do 120 hours total of experiential in your P1 and P3 year. Being able to drive it better than bum rides all the time.
(5) I am out of state, and getting in-state tution after 1 year is not hard. If you want to be safe, walk into Joe's office and go through the check list when school starts. Basically, as long as you are studying on student loans, it's easy.
Bonus tips:
(1) Get an internship early during school year. I slacked off until late spring of P1 year to apply, by then all the interns who started already were asking for extra hours during summer break, and companies will stop hiring new interns. >_<
(2) hospital internships are the hardest to get. Apply to many, and be prepared to wait. It took me more than a year to land one. But hospitals is easy work compared to community, no slaving here. However I kept my community internship as well, this way you learn (and earn) more.
(3) Most places pay about the same for P1's (about $12-$13/hr), but Kroger pays the best later on (P2 $15, P3 $18, P4 $21). Working 12 hours a week should be enough for most people to pay their living expenses. ($500-$600/mo rent for a 1 bd room near campus).
(4) Keep your grades up in your P1 year. OSU gave me $1500 need based + $3100 in merit based scholarships for my P2 year just for having a 3.7 GPA in my P1 year. With the switch in residency and getting an internship, I went from taking out $35K in P1 year to $11K for P2. LOL.
