I've been accepted to OSU 😀 very very excited and I am definitely leaning toward going there. However, up until this year Wisconsin was my #1 choice (I didn't apply to OSU last year b/c I didn't know about the IS tuition after year 1). I withdrew all other applications except Wisconsin and I am just not 100% sure where I would go if I get into Wisconsin too. Can current students talk about the pros and cons of each? I want some advice from people who are there

Thanks!

It may be a good idea to wait until the end of Feb, when wisc letters come out, before you drive yourself crazy thinking about this huge decision! 🙂 no need to raise your stress level until then

You're not the only one driving yourself nuts... Ever since my Mizzou interview, I've been debating whether or not I should stick with my in state school (Wisconsin, which is where I've been dreaming of going to vet school my entire life) or go to Missouri (one I've never thought of going to until I fell in love with it after my interview). I haven't even been accepted to either of them yet! I've finally vowed to myself that I will not dwell upon making a decision until I've been accepted and have gone to the open houses. I know how you feel! (By the way, yesterday I was wanting to go to WI, now today it's MO 😉 ) I just can't help myself...

Just wanted to revive this thread...I just want to know what people think about each school. Not driving myself nuts with a decision, very happy with OSU acceptance. I just want some perspective....please and thank you 🙂

Any thoughts?

Why OSU or Why Wisconsin?

Why OSU? Because I got in and it was cheaper than all my other options. I withdrew all my other apps (except florida because they were even cheaper, but rejected me) because I wouldn't even consider others.

I took the advice of pretty much every vet I ever talked to who said go to the cheapest school I got into.

Check the OSU thread, most of us have talked about our experiences over there.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it until you find out if you've been accepted to Wisconsin. They have lots of OOS applicants (almost 1,000 two years ago) and only 10-20 OOS seats. No reason to worry about something when there's only a 1-2% chance of it happening.

So, Wisconsin has started making calls. No, I have not been accepted yet and I know chances are slim. However, I find myself getting excited/nervous about a potential call which makes me think that (if i do get in) I should still consider Wisconsin along with OSU. Soo, can ANYONE offer any info on either school? I do have a lot of input from OSU students from the OSU thread but I would like to hear from some wisconsin advocates so I can compare. Any info/advice would be appreciated.

PS. Unless you have a comment pertaining to my questions, please do not post. I do not want anyone telling me not to worry about it since I do not have an acceptance from Wisconsin. I'm a planner as most of you are and I would like to weigh my options if the invite from wisconsin should come.

Maybe you should take the lack of response from Wisconsin folks as a sign that you should come to OSU 😀

Nah, don't do that. Wisconsin is great!

DVMorBUST and I have been answering questions in the Wisconsin thread. You should check it out, and if you have any other specific questions, just let us know.

I actually got accepted to both schools, so I have been weighing the options as well. I would have to pay OOS tuition for both schools. The bottom line came down to Wisconsin being MUCH cheaper than OSU. OSU estimates $79,000 for the first year for OOS students, although starting the second year you can try to get IS tuition. Wisconsin, on the other hand, is about $36,000 for a year. They're both equally good schools in relatively similar climate areas in the Midwest, so I pick Wisconsin over OSU. OSU is just much too expensive.

And it's an excellent reason to do so. I've been having the same problem making a choice - sure, money isn't everything but it is VERY important. The amount you'll be saving is a downpayment on a house, having kids, opening a practice, etc. Congrats on your choice! Hopefully I'll see you at the Wisconsin open house in March! 🙂

The OSU cost of living numbers include a much more generous amount of money for non-tuition expenses. So if you look they estimate ~22k a year versus wisconsins numbers at around 12k per year. Our budget includes stuff like $3800 for books(which none of us get anywhere near) compared to wisconsins $1300. Or $2000 in transportation expenses compared to wisconsins $600. So just because its offered doesn't mean you have to take it.

The In-state tuition for OSU(which you would get years 2-4) is pretty much the same as out of state for Wisconsin. So the cost of attendance is going to be pretty much the same for those 3 years. And for your first year at OSU you will get socked paying roughly an extra 20k as an out of state resident at Ohio.

So OSU should cost you more on the order of an extra 25-30k in total for 4 years as opposed to the 43k a year based on mickeyy's numbers.
