Well, I interviewed at OU yesterday.
Now the big "wait"...Feb 19th seems like a long ways off.

btw....they provided a great lunch. Brisket, small potatoes, and
lots more...I'm a meat n tators kinda guy so it was great for me 🙂

We had lasagna with scalloped potatoes, steamed veggies, salad, bread and cookies. I'm a vegetarian, so the lasagna was out, but there was still plenty for me to eat. I'm surprised that so many people give negative feedback about the pork thing -- as a vegetarian, I can't eat that stuff, either, but I'm content if there's lots of side dishes to eat. I don't see why Muslims, etc. wouldn't feel the same.

I agree.
There was PLENTY to eat other than meat. Several kinds of veggie salads, rolls, cookies, coffee, tea, lemonade, sides of veggies.

I'm not too worried about anyone who whines about it cuz there was something someone might not want to eat. Great, don't eat it. It's free so why gripe...if you want a lunch catered to your specific preference, bring your own lunch cuz your mom doesn't work there. More for the rest of us 🙂

It was a nicer lunch than I expected.

Glad you had a good day, JohnnyOU. We'll keep our fingers crossed.

Hey, Exlawgrrl, is that *you* in the new avatar? I guess now that we're accepted we may have to lose some of our anonymity. You all know what my dog looks like. I can tell you one thing - I sure wouldn't post the passport photo I sent to OU - that was one expensive cra**y picture. I was slouched into a tiny chair in a little booth at MotoPhoto (didn't have time to just scan a good photo) and I looked annoyed. And fat. That was the only photo I had taken during my clean-shaven-for-interview period.

I got the impression that people that interviewed recently wouldn't get their acceptances until sometime after the 19th, but rejections would come asap? Is this the understanding of the rest of you? Are rejections in the form of emails, phone calls, letters or what?

Just FYI... I reported the last "red" negative interview post as being inappropriate. I'm not trying to start any arguments with anyone - but, if you look at the last 4 "red" interview feedback posts - at least 3 of them, if not all 4, cover the same complaints with a similar writing style. Remarkably similar - in length, tone, and grammar. I could guess who I think it is - but I won't. The point is, if you had a negative experience, you're entitled to post it. Once. I think we have an unhappy friend who is using the interview forum very inappropriately.

Perhaps I should let all this go... but what is said about OU-COM now matters to me a great deal. If the posts are inappropriate - and I think they are if they are from a single author - personally, I think they should be removed.

OK, I've vented now.

I'm not sure what method they'll use to tell us [email, snail, phone], but everyone is supposed to be contacted by the the 19th at the latest. Dr. Hall told us that if anyone was getting rejected she wanted to let them know as quickly as possible, so from that I gathered that if I get something in the mail THIS coming week it is probably bad.

Sooooooooooo

I refuse to check the mail for the next two weeks just to be safe! 🙂

As far as I can tell from this year and year's past, it all get sent out pretty quick.

Some folks in this thread got acceptance letters within 2-3 days post interview.

10 days and nothing in the mail. Let's hope day 11 brings better results.

My wife and I just bought each other (that's a great way to put it, isn't it 🙂 ) a 65" Mitsubishi HDTV for our 8th anniversary.
We ordered it online and it's being shipped by freight to our front door. I've been biting my nails waiting on it as it's supposed to be here tomorrow or Mon., but a quick perusal of this forum just brought things into perspective.

All of a sudden, waiting for a TV doesn't seem so bad when compared on waiting on a decisiion which will affect the rest of your life. (Although, this TV may ruin me, and cause me to flunk out, thereby doing the same. 🙂)

At any rate, good luck to everyone who's waiting on letters.
Even if you get waitlisted, there's always the high possiblity of a later acceptance as some people begin to drop their multiple acceptances in a couple of months (I forget the exact deadline).

I hope your wife won't let you watch Discovery Health on your new T.V. Looking at those trauma injuries in a larger-than-actual-life high-def format would just not be right. Hehehe... congratulations on your anniversary.

Wow... nice mutual gift. 🙂 My wife and I will be celebrating our 4th anniversary this May, but I don't think we'll go for something quite like that.

Although, I am getting to go flying again this summer. Here's to hopefully getting my instrument rating before classes start in the fall!

Oh yeah? Well my wife and I are buying a gift together for Valentine's Day - yeah, it's a.... CD.... crap. you win.

I think for our upcoming 11th anniversary this summer, my wife and I are going all out and pay her sister to watch the kids for the weekend while we sit on the couch, order pizza, watch tv, and ENJOY THE PEACE AND QUIET! 😎

Another test block is upon us... I sit in the lounge now eyeballs deep in physiology and I don't seem to be alone.

Only 9 to go. 😛

I just bought a lotto ticket. If I win, I'm not studying anymore for this test block. But I will finish school, and try to do so successfully...but I'm NOT studying anymore THIS test block.

I didn't win. Guess my lucky dollar wasn't so lucky when I use it on a ticket. Oh, well, there is always Wednesday night!!! :luck:

I know someone who did not get an interview at OU this year with a 3.8 gpa and a 26 on the mcat. Is this possible? Surely the cut off was not a 27 this year for the mcat. Did anyone else get an interview with less than a 27?
I feel really bad for her. My mcat was only one point higher and my gpa way lower. 😕

nah 27 wasnt cutoff i know ppl with 25 that got interviews, but like 3.9 gpa

i had a 26, 24, 26 but a 4.0 and got accepted...ive decided this whole process is so unpredictable no matter what your scores are

I had a guy at my OSU interview in January who I interviewed with at OU on Dec 6th and he said he had already been accepted to OU with a 27.

It was me, but now it's my other kitty. She's much prettier than me, so it's a good change. 🙂 I have a long passport photo story. I paid $25 at kinko's for the first pictures and looked like a drug addict and then shelled out $15 at this other local photo place and got some pretty okay pictures. The stupid thing is that I forgot to put postage on the good photos and realized that like two hours after I put them in the mail. I had two remaining good photos, so I had to mail those along with the two psycho photos. Luckily, my nicest interviewer got the psycho photo. 😛

I got to see my first surgery yesterday! It was pretty darn cool; it was an exploratory laproscopy. For those that don't know what that is (like me, I didn't know what would happen until I got up in the OR), it involves cutting open the abdomen from pubic bone to below the breast line and digging around checking out each organ to try and find the cause of bleeding. I got to see the intestines chillin' outside of a person's body. The general surgeon went through and showed me a variety of organs after the whole thing was over. They removed the spleen (just for me) and that was freakin' neat. You know what else was neat? I didn't pass out or vomit or anything else humiliating that happens all the time to pre-meds and med students at their first surgery. I was pretty happy about that. I felt a little faint for a min. but I calmed myself down. Surgery = 😎 Shame they have such crappy hours & a long residency.

It's test block 1, baby!

Get your game faces on. 🙂

Sorry to hijack the topic again... just thought I'd let you guys get used to this whole empathy thing... or at least sympathy, cause if you don't understand our stress yet, you will soon.

Oh, well... BRING IT ON!!!

I was worried about the same things the first time I went into a surgery. Luckily I didn't pass out or puke, but was calm and had an iron stomach through the entire procedure. The weird thing is that the smell of burning flesh from the electrocaudery (sp?) made me hungry. :scared:

Hmmm that is somewhat disturbing. Of course, the huge mass of blood clots the docs pulled out of her reminded me of grade jelly... and then I had a pb & j (grape, no less) for my next meal. Are we sick? Perhaps.

In other news, it is almost time for us deferree's (sp?) to know our fate. I dreamed last night that I was waitlisted. If I get waitlisted, I am retaking the MCAT in april = no fun. Here's hopin' for an acceptance right off the bat.

I heard Dr. Hall say that rejections would go out within 2 days (assuming she meant business days, Feb 6th). *She made a point of saying she wanted to let people who didn't get in this time know asap so they sould start working with OU to get in next time - how nice is that?*

She said the committee is meeting Feb 19th to decide who gets Yes, No, or Waitlisted. I've heard from other people that the decisions are basically made at this stage. So, I'm not sure if the committee is a letter stuffing group or what? Anywho, it seems like the OU Waitlist is fairly short and is still a good letter to find in your mailbox.

I've only heard of OU sending information though the mail. (Red envelopes = yes and White = No or Waitlist)

Please correct me if I misunderstood or have been (for shame!!) misinformed.

Thanks for all these articles. They were great! I, as Murphy could have predicted, got no questions on socialized medicine. 🙂

lol

Same here. I studied the healthcare in Canada and the UK. But they didn't ask me anything about it.

Most everything we talked about was more of a personal nature, which was easy enough I guess. I thought the interview went real well, but it was my first and only one so I don't have anything to compare it to. My mind started playing with me though because as I was leaving, the interviewer who walked me to the door wasn't looking into my eyes as I left...so obviously I'm all like "ACK...she knows she's gonna trashcan me and can't stand to look into my eyes because she feels sorry for me!!!!!!.... She knows my inner shame!!!!!" 😱

I checked the mail 4 times today fearing that rapid-fire rejection letter Dr. Hall promised me. lol

Why didn't she just eyeball me directly in that lecture hall and giggle when she said "...we'll be sending out rejection letters asap so you'll be able to adjust your plans..."... and then she coulda said "JOHNNY!!...You heard that last part, right?"

What is the best way to go about finding housing for medical school? I am looking for a 2 bedroom house/apartment. Distance from the school isn't a huge factor, but I would prefer no more than a 20 minute drive. Where are some of the "better" areas to look? Any input or feedback is greatly appreciated. I look forward to meeting everyone in August.

Thanks for the finger crossing!! I thought it went as well as possible. Since my path wasn't direct, we had a lot to cover. I never could decide who the 'bad guy' was so, I take that as a positive. I'd say they have a good sense of who I am and really trust them if they think OU and I aren't a good match. From my perspective, I really liked the other people I spoke to - staff, students, and fellow candidates. So, it was a good day overall!

This is a million times more excruciating than waiting for MCAT scores to come in. Just one more time to clarify; we should hear something by Feb. 19th or letters will go out on Feb. 19th? I’m also going with the assumption that no news is good news at this time?

Yes. No news is good news at this time.

I'm not sure about the 19th being when we should hear something or when the mail should be sent out. Wish I knew.

I just checked my mail...got some stuff and nothing from OU...so 👍 so far.

And I agree, this is worse than the post-mcat wait. I have forbidden my wife (with her permission of course) from checking the mail for the next two weeks because if I get horrible news I don't want her involved since I'll be in a mood to kick bunny rabbits.

It really depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a newer home, most of the growth is going to be on the north side of OKC (like in Edmond). That's where I live - the drive can range probably anywhere from 10-25 minutes depending on exactly where you are. If you're looking for a lower price (older house/apartment) there's all kinds of stuff available all over the city. I came from out-of-state, so we found a realtor, then came out for a week and basically just drove all over the place until we found what we were looking for. Good luck!

I typed out a big ol' reply, and took too long and SDN cleared it all. This will therefore be the abridged edition.

NE, South, maybe SW OKC (just south of I-40), and just west of downtown are prolly your more shady areas. It has been awhile since I've lived in OKC proper. But I grew up about a Par 3 from OUHSC. I know there are prolly some islands in there that aren't as bad, but beware. It's kinda like a loaf of moldy bread; do you go looking for the ones that aren't AS moldy?

And as far as driving, you can make it quite a ways (waze?) in 20-25 mins, allowing you to live within a pretty good sized radius from the school. My family and in-laws live in Midwest City, the eastern outskirts of which are prolly about as far as I want to drive.

As a side, are Okies the only people that translate "distance" into "time", as in "How far is so and so?", "Oh, it's like 2 hours or so."

I and several of my classmates live in Moore. I personally really like it. As long as you know when to avoid I-35 driving to class isn't a problem.

Just wanted to throw out another option. 🙂

As for more specific advice, if you're really interested in a house definitely look into a realtor. If you're not ready for that big of a committment, just cruise their webpages for home listings. My wife and I bought our house through a Century 21 agent.

Definitely not - I can speak at least for Florida, Virginia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. It's pretty common, at least in my world. My crazy world - full of nociception and spinoreticular fibers... oops, my brain just fell out through my ear...

Another day and no rejection letter...so that's good.
They said they were going to send those out asap and I'm guessing people received them around Tuesday...I know of one guy who interviewed the same day as I did who got his rejection on Tuesday.

I guess I'm looking at either a spot on the waitlist or an acceptance (which would surprise and thrill me). Or maybe my evil rejection letter is taking its time getting here. I won't be getting too excited until I know something for sure though.

Anyone heard anything?

Thanks,
Johnny

After 2.5 weeks of waiting and no response from OU I decided to call them. I'm deferred.

I also found out that the final adcom meeting on Feb. 19th is open to the public. I was thinking about going myself. Is anyone else going?

Ugggg... I forgot I could also be deferred.

I wonder what on earth that meeting would be like.

How often do they have them during these interview cycles?
I'm assuming the had one right after my Feb 2nd interview, otherwise how did some people at that interview already get rejected.

I think, though I am not absolutely positive, that the meeting on the 19th is when they look at the deferred people and those who interviewed later to decide who will fill the remaining ~20 or so spots, along with compiling the waitlist. This isn't known all around, but those who interview in the last few days (sorry, I can't remember for sure what days those are...I think it may have been either the 27th and on, or all the days after the 27th) aren't looked at for rolling admission anymore. They are grouped into this last meeting day (19th) with the deferees to fill those last spots available (so the numbers I have heard is ~90 applicants left to fill 20 spots). Normally, other interview days were decided on that day by the committee, but of course must still be approved by the dean. Basically, it was in the afternoon of the earlier interviews if the interviewers gave them the A-okay, a maybe, or no. {But for those that interviewed the last days, maybe they go ahead and decide the for sure no's so they can notify them asap (this is strictly my opinion and not anything I have heard from the admissions)}.

Hope that doesn't frustrate any of you too much, but just something to think about where you might by sitting.
