I've gotten some really good interviews, and if people want to think it's solely because of my skin color, well it's fine by me. It doesn't bother me in the slightest.

As an MD/PhD, my job will be to produce the best research possible. I'll let that speak for itself.

Considering that California has a fairly large population of brown people, err... no. Considering that whites are a minority at UC Irvine (where I did my undergrad), I honestly never felt, "ZOMG TEH AZNS ARE OPPRESSIN MEH!" Hell, I didn't even feel oppressed over the fact that I'm conservative either during undergrad (to be fair, Irvine is a fairly conservative place) or during grad school at the People's Republic of Tax-a-chusetts.

Nah I just think that if you grew up in a great situation and happen to be a URM and you pull that card out on your apps despite your upbringing thats BS

I know there are plenty of great URM candidates...and frankly it makes me respect someone of color more knowing that they perhaps did have to swim upstream to get where they are now. But knowing they were given lower standards of admission makes a sliver of that respect fade away.

Not to try to be a dick about this because I respect you as an individual and think its great that you have such high aims in life....but look at all the times the jews have been outright KILLED in mass genocides in recorded history, holocaust, pogroms, spanish inquisition, etc, and have come back against the odds and expected to integrate into societies who hated them without special programs or lower standards....and for the most part been very successful at that.

THAT is something I am extremely proud of.

You should be. We are not talking about current socioeconomic conditions which affects kids and their ability to learn, which I hope you agree are quite a bit different for the Jewish population in the US compared to african americans.

I do understand the differences. This issue is so incredibly complex and one I generally stay out of because 100 percent of the time it ends in a fight.

I just think that having a special admission for URMs is the completely wrong way to attack the problem. It is a step in the wrong direction IMO.

Bleargh, please let me know all the medical schools you are applying to so that I know to withdraw from them. It saddens and sickens me that you are going to be a future doctor catering to all demographics. As a PROUD URM, I fail to find the humor in your post. And shame on you other people for encouraging this nonsense!

First off, I know bleargh in real life from a year of school with him. I know one thing he is not complaining against URMs but making fun of those who do. He is a superstar in my book and has no reason to worry about anyone taking his seat in med school from him. So if anything he is making fun of people who feel that URMs are doing such more likely knowing what little bit I know of him from both here on SDN and with the very little interaction I had with him in real life in the past.

Take a chill pill and learn to understand sarcasm and those that make fun of the people who seriously make these arguments.
