Hey all,

Anyone here apply to Clinical MA/PhD Programs in Ontario (OISE, York, Ryerson, Guelph, etc)? If so, has anyone received any interview invites/acceptances/rejections yet? I've applied to all programs in Ontario and haven't heard anything........

I applied to a bunch of programs in Ontario. These are posted in the other Invite thread, but I really struggle to keep up with people posting about Canadian schools because there are so many more US schools than Canadian schools.

Anyhow, I've heard from Waterloo and Queen's in Ontario. And someone else posted that they've heard from Ryerson (last night). And I know someone (not on this site) who was invited for an interview to Guelph.

Hopefully this thread doesn't get combined with the other invite thread 🙁

Has anyone heard from UWO? I think I saw something posted on the other thread, but I was just curious if anyone else has heard from them.

Just to let you know, last year I didn't get an invite to York until Feb 20th. Each prof in adult clinical does things at different times, there isn't a set interview date.

Yay! Fellow Ontario applicants! I haven't heard from any of the Ontario schools I applied to yet, but neither has anyone else I know. Although I did see on the interview/waitlist threads that someone has heard from UWO and Queen's, as well as Concordia (but that's not in Ontario). I will keep you guys posted!

Good to know that York was late-ish in the interviews last year, although I am still kind of losing my mind with anxiety... 😱

As far as I know, it was only one prof from Concordia that has sent interview invites/rejections. Not to give it away, but it was the DCT (Director of Clinical Training). The other professors have yet to send emails.

I was told today that someone in my Department heard from Ottawa for an invite. I don't know if it was from the DCT or their POI but someone at Ottawa made an interview offer.

Not sure if anyone else applied to Ottawa... just thought I'd post what I've heard.

According to the Interview Invite Thread, someone got an interview for the York Clinical-Developmental Program. There is no additional info on it though...

I called York today because I received an email from a POI confirming my application status. Apparently some part of my application was lost, so I had to answer some questions.

The admissions secretary told me that ranking of students has been completed (for adult and developmental tracks) and interviews have started going out and will continue to go out for the next couple weeks. Just thought I'd post an update for those of you waiting to hear.

I received an interview invite for Western Ontario and the interview day was this past Friday (Feb.5), they invited 12 people from an applicant pool of 120. Many of the other people I spoke with had interviews at Queens, Ryerson, Guelph, etc. I'm a Concordia student at the moment and I can tell you that the interview process there doesn't follow any logical order, profs just interview whenever they want so don't be discouraged if you haven't heard anything.

Thanks for the update. That info is actually quite helpful.

The silence is so loud, as one song-writer puts it. Very anxious.

Is anyone else interviewing at Waterloo this week? The interview itinerary looks really daunting! :lame:

Invites for Ottawa have been passed out.

Yay, interview invite extended for Ryerson today!

Congrats! Is it from your POI or are they having a whole interview day event??

It was from my POI. If you PM yours I can tell you if it's the same 🙂

The York Clinical-Developmental Open House is on Feb 22. The invite came from my POI via email this evening.

Congrats!! Do you know if york adult clinical is the same?

It's only for the Clinical-Developmental track, I'm positive.

Hi everyone,

I can't seem to find a forum that deals specifically with Clinical psychology Masters programs, as opposed to the PhD or PsyD.

I've heard that the University of Western Ontario's clinical psychology masters interviews already happened (same day as the PhD - Feb. 5th). This is leaving me feeling obviously very unhappy, as I did not get an interview. 🙁

Can anyone confirm that this is the case? Does Western have anymore interviews, or do they just do it on the one day? I've also read on the grad school cafe website that some people were just admitted by phone to some of the PhD programs.. is this a possibility? Or is EVERYONE who is short-listed interviewed?

Also, for York University, does anyone know if the offers for interviews are currently being sent out?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

The interviewees of all the Western Ontario clinical faculty members accepting students for next year were all present at the interview day last Friday. I also know that the clinical faculty met yesterday and finalized their admissions decisions because my POI called me afterward to tell me that UWO is offering me admission to the program. Sorry if this news is disappointing, but I personally find that it's better to know one way or another than to be in limbo!

Hey all,

I just thought I'd post about Waterloo - I received an acceptance today to their program. They only took on three new students.

Best of luck to everyone in their interviews 🙂

Did you guys/gals (probably the latter) all do a thesis?

Just wondering b/c I dont think I'm getting in anywhere, so I want to improve my odds for the third round... :S If I dont get in anywhere, I plan to take summer courses to boost my gpa, do a summer research project with funding, and volunteer some more.

P.S. still haven't heard a thing from any of the schools I applied for except that I was rejected from U. Calgary. Still hoping.

I did a thesis, which I started the summer before my fourth year. Thankfully my results worked out in a such a way that I've also presented my findings at a couple conferences and the manuscript is in preparation. I also spent a total of 2.5 years of RAing in my undergrad, a couple of RAships resulted in my name being listed as second or third author.

From what I've been told in interviews, its the publications and research experience that made my application strong. I applied to 6 programs in Canada and have received 6 interviews.

So 6 professors were taking students from UWO, does this mean only 2 students per professor were interviewed? Seems awfully low. What if both students decline? They will have to go back to the applicant pool I guess.

So I was on holidays when I received the news, but on Feb 11 I received invites for both York's Clinical-Developmental open house, and a phone interview for University of Windsor 😀 Thankfully, I could check my email at the hotel 😉

Kind of weird situation with Windsor: the phone interview invite came from a faculty member in the Child Clinical track (to which I applied), but not from either of the faculty members that I applied under. I can't find anything on the website that says this person holds some sort of managerial/administrative position for the Child Clinical area. Everything she has said in her emails has led me to believe that I will be speaking only to her for the entire 1.5 hours 😱😕 Can anyone shed some light on this, or offer advice?!

Thanks so much! 🙂

At Windsor, you aren't accepted to work directly with a professor in your first year, you are accepted to the program. After your first year you decide who you want to work with. It is kind of weird that someone else will be interviewing you though; last year we were told that we were matched up with a professor we applied to work with for our interview.

Anyone have any news on the OISE (School & Clinical Child Psych) program at UofT?

Hi everyone,

I have a question about the interview process. For Clinical programs, there are usually about 140-150 applicants, and then about 45 people put on a short-list who are interviewed .. and of those, about 10 get in (at least this is my understanding).

If you are short-listed and selected for an interview, what are your chances of getting in? Are they 1/4-5ish, as would be suggested by the numbers above, or does it depend on the number of people your POI is interviewing? Let's say POI is interviewing 3 people... are you only competing with those 3? Or is it possible that, even if the Prof wants to work with you, if the quota is met for the program, he/she may not get that option if other Prof's interviewees are ranked better than you?

I hope that makes some sort of sense.. 😛

I really doubt that. 45 people may get shortlisted or pass departmental approval, but only 2-4 people per position get interviewed. Maybe a little more if it's something like Windsor or Ryerson who will anticipate a higher decline rate.

Profs admit only one student at a time - their top choice. If the student declines, move on to person 2, person 3 that they interviewed. Rare, but if all 2-3 decline, it may be back to the applicant pool - or, they just won't pick a student that year - they may feel no one else has matched their interests.

---

To people who have several acceptances: all I can say is please start declining your non-preferred positions, so other students can have a chance (like me).

Also at some schools like Ottawa for instance, the POI selects their top choice and then extends an offer to them. If this person says no then that POI has to wait until all the other faculty have extended offers. Because they only admit X number of people per year the POI may not be able to take on a new student if other faculty members offers are accepted by students.

In addition, some POIs take more than 1 student depending on the size of their current lab. For instance, one of the POIs I was accepted with (yes, I declined the offers I do not plan to accept) only took one student whereas last year he made offers to 3 students and hoped to take 2 of them.

Really what I'm saying is that it's hard to predict any rules or odds. This process is a total crapshoot.

Also rejected from UWO with snail mail - blah.

For anyone who got an interview at York University for adult clinical, can you please PM me your POI?? I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Anyone who interviewed at Ryerson hear anything yet? Any idea when decision are being made?

Has anyone else heard from Concordia for interviews, etc. I know there was another prof that was supposed to be holding interviews, but I only heard from one.

Rejection received via snail mail, dated Feb. 17 2010, Clinical PhD program

Hey sorry to hear that. Do you know if your online application status also states this ?

Canadian schools yet to hear from:
Concordia, UBC, Ryerson. Anyone else still waiting from these?
Starting to hear from Mac, but it's not clinical psych.

To my knowledge Concordia acceptance offers went out a few weeks ago. Also I know for sure that Ryerson offers started going out this week - my interview was 2 weeks ago, and while I pulled my application from consideration following my interviews (because I received an offer elsewhere), I know a handful of people who were informed about acceptances/waitlist this week.

No idea about UBC.

UBC typically notifies very early of acceptances (usually January), though it could be different this year. Last year I emailed my POI in mid February and found out I was rejected because he ended up not taking a student.

Heard from UBC just minutes ago! (Department of Educational and Counseling Psych)

Yeah, I was referring to clinical psych in my above post, so counseling notifies differently. 🙂

Anyone know when we should hear back? I applied directly to Ottawa as I have been out of school for a while, so I havent heard anything since December when I received the "confirmation email"

Any time from end of March (22nd was the earliest I've heard of people finding out in years previous) to mid-end of April.

I was curious about when decision would be made about CIHR and OGS, so I checked online about when they notify about final decisions.

CIHR is July 15th! So far away...
OGS is apparently April 14th.
