Hello,

I was just wondering; are we allowed to apply for Ophthalmology and for another residency program simultaneously? For example, apply for Ophthalmology through the SF match and apply for Anesthesiology/Radiology/Neurology/Internal Medicine etc through ERAS?
Or does one exclude the other..? Can someone get accepted into both (I know it's very very very hard, but I'm asking hypothetically)?

Thank you!

You can apply for both. However, you will need to withdraw from ERAS if you match into ophthalmology.

Make sure you get two sets of recommendation letters. For example, from Attending A, ask for rec letter A1 that says "John/Joanne is a promising ophthalmologist" and rec letter A2 that says "John/Joanne is a promising neurologist."

Awkward things can happen if you submit Rec letter A1 to neurology...

Be ready to go on A TON of INTERVIEWS. Ophtho, prelim/transition, and whatever else (neuro/anesth/medicine etc) that you are also applying for.

DON'T TELL ANYONE YOU'RE APPLYING TO TWO SPECIALTIES (other than your rec letter writers and your school dean who has to write your dean letter). Each specialty wants loyalty and 100% commitment.
