Ortho bubble about to pop?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For anyone reading this thread and wondering, “quality ortho CE” does not exist. I’ve followed this category for years and it’s not out there. There is ortho CE, but not enough to make you practically an orthodontist. It’s not about bonding the brackets or slinging plastic. It’s about planning on how to achieve the treatment goals and then seeing how your results hold up. It takes years to observe and evaluate all of this which is why it is impossible to teach “quality ortho CE” over a few weekends.

imo there is no amount/quality of CE that is equivalent to a residency.

I've only been in my residency a few months and it is literally a different world in the level of knowledge compared to dental school.

No one is arguing that CE will make you an "orthodontist," but it certainly will help you master minor tooth movement. And for many patients that's all they need. The technologies that have made orthos’ jobs easier have also enabled GPs. We're not in the "olden days" when you had to manually put in a bend in some stainless steel wire for every individual tooth movement.

That said, if your teeth look like this, you should probably see an orthodontist...

This poster below feels CE is good enough, no residency necessary.

There is so much good quality CE for Endo, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, and Implants that the time/cost of residency is just not worth it.

It's funny. I am a specialist and I have no problems with GPs doing "specialty work." Maybe it's because I was a GP before specializing. It's about proper case selection and knowing your limits and when to refer. As a specialist, your job is to be there for the GPs for the things they can't competently handle.

This person did not know their limits...
