you're pre-dent and already thinkin about ortho?....jeez....anyways to answer your question:

it's not about the school silly.....! it is about:

1-NBDE1 score
2-Dental school GPA
3-dental class rank
4-recommendations from known faculty members
5-last but not least: being popular and having a nice personality.

if you're smart, hard working and well-rounded, you can specialize from any dental school in the country. if you're not, you won't. it's as simple as that!

AMEN! Enough said.

People from non-BIG name schools tend to say the same thing....but how do people from columbia, ucsf, harvard, upenn, etc...have to say about it??

For ortho, Columbia has a much higher percentage of their students going into it than Maryland ... last year 8 out of 78 Columbia grads went into it. For peds it's about the same between those two schools.

Then again, students with stronger academic background tend to go to Columbia (as measured by DAT), and hence being in top 10% at Columbia may be as hard as being in top 3% at other schools.

Columbia does have overall higher percentage of grads going into specialties (excluding GPR/AEGD) than other schools, the exception being Harvard.
