You're robbing yourself by refusing to read wikipedia. I understand that someone can "write whatever they want" but it's peer-edited (and they're quick!)

As an example, we all imbibed a few adult beverages one night and started talking about where we were from. I mentioned Selena, and no one knew who she was (while she has idol status here). I went to her wikipedia page and it said something to the effect of "thousands of fans visit her statue each month."

Nuh-uh. No way.

I edited it to say "hundreds of fans visit her statue each year."

I got a warning and they put it back the way it was.

I then, blurry-eyed, typed in that tens of people visit the statue each month. My wikipedia account was subsequently banned.

There's a difference between reading it and citing it as a source. I've been told my numerous professors in pharmacy and undergrad: don't even think of citing wikipedia. I agree with that, to think that it's ok to cite wikipedia in a professional academic environment is sort of out of this world. What's next - citing twitter posts ?

Even I know who Selena is. lol Duh... she made J Lo famous.

Bleh. A lot of us boycotted that movie. Looking back on it, I should have said "screw it" and just been one of the extras. It'd be fun to point out, except that you'd have to watch the movie.

We've only had 2 or 3 movies filmed here. The other big one was "Legend of Billie Jean." Wasn't that epic? Lisa Simpson blossoming as a flower of a young woman during a car chase scene?

Bleh!

Thanks to the Library of Congress, that might happen in the future.

I guess I am an old fart with old fashioned views because that just sounds wrong to me on a number of levels.

I'd throw it away and demand my money back.

LOL I'm not a J Lo fan or huge fan of that movie so don't feel bad.

I still don't know what to think of the announcement. I guess it will definitely make for some interesting material in sociology classes of the future (especially like the stuff in Iran, etc)

J-lo = major disappointment

J- lo ≠ Jenny from the block?

Last year I had a textbook which cited Wikipedia in a chapter.

a TEXTBOOK.
As much as I love wikipedia. :smack:

which reminds me of my favorite pie chart:
medicalschool.jpg

One of the pre-meds said it was harder to get into medical school than any other program. What do you think about this?

Well, it's harder to get into med school than most other programs. But between that harder programs like PharmD, DDS and MD it's really hard to say since pretty much no one has taken more than one of the admission tests. I know pharmD and DDS students jump through a lot of the same hoops we do (research, volunteering).

I don't want to take a real firm stance on it since I'm ignorant of the statistics behind all programs other than MD.

I've been told its easier to get into med school vs pharm school because there are way less people going for it

I've heard that too. But it was from pre-allo, which I consider a less than reputable source.

and I didn't notice you got modded, congrats.

Med school admissions are actually looking like they're set to become easier in the near future. With lots of new school opening for the first time since the 60's and health care reform looming. So I'm guessing med school competitiveness peaked 4-2 years ago.

I will say the MCAT looked more crazy than the PCAT. I was toying with the idea for a year of doing a both, and I started studying for the MCAT for a while

The PCAT is pretty ridiculously easy. I think most 'legit' people who are serious about pharmacy can score half way decently, unless of course English is their second language I can understand why verbal and reading would probably bring the overall score down. I mean I guess some people really don't perform well on exams, but pharmacy school consists of ~3 years of didactic courses with midterms and finals. I could not imagine suriviving that and struggling with severe exam anxiety.

I thought the PCAT was too easy. I didn't really study the second time and still did well.

The PCAT was more conceptual based, whereas the MCAT seemed much more specific. Like you couldn't BS your way through it lol

I noticed that too. I read the Kaplan book, but I felt like everything in there was stuff I should know from taking a lot of science classes anyway. When I took the actual exam, it was very basic information IMO. Kind of testing whether we actually had any long term memory of the concepts we should've picked up along the way. I finished all the sections 10-15 minutes early except for 'math' which I actually had to rush through.

The only thing I think about the reading and verbal is that if you are really great at science, but horrible in the other subjects then it might've been hard. I don't remember much from those sections, but I had amazing AP language and literature teachers in high school that pretty much prepared me for all that stuff in college. I think I would not have ever done well in those areas had it not been for certain teachers I've had, since I really don't take a liking to English or writing courses.

When I told people about how I did on the PCAT the first time I took it, they said my score was good and that they wouldn't take the PCAT again if they had a score like mine. I personally thought I could have scored better.

I almost re-took the PCAT so I could do better on the quantitative ability (I got a 62) but then I figured that was stupid since I got a 93 composite anyway. I was so paranoid about getting in somewhere that I thought a 99 or something would look better than a 93 but I honestly don't think it matters at that point when you take into consideration all the other things that get looked at anyway.

The biggest difference I've noted between pre-meds and pre-pharms is that volunteering (especially in a hospital setting) isn't discussed near as often and seems to be much more "optional." As some of you have said in previous posts, there are students entering their P2 year who have nil real pharmacy exposure. In my opinion, med school admissions seems much more difficult. Yoda brings up a good point, though, that it might have peaked a few years ago (when I was still pre-med). Maybe with healthcare reform passed, things will shift in a new direction.

Like, maybe it'll be worth it to go to med school to become a FP doc vs just going the NP/PA route.

This.

Pharmacy applicants can almost always get accepted somewhere with hard stats like a strong GPA and PCAT. It is true there are many pharmacy students with no experience at all. Medical school admissions, on the other hand, seem to require a lot more 'soft' qualities outside of strong GPA and MCAT alone.

So what do you think about that new immigration bill they signed in Arizona?

I find all of the commentary bashing Arizona rather amusing. I even saw someone call it NaziZona. 🤣 to be honest, I think Jan Brewer is nuts but I am glad the bill passed. My family is opposed and most of my friends are opposed. And for all those lunatics talking **** about Arizona... LOL... I encourage them to spend some time in a border state. They don't know anything about it! Now maybe people will actually pay f-in attention to what we are going through and actually propose some form of immigration reform. For ****s sake, it is like a war zone here. Downtown Phoenix is filled to the brim with protestors. I hope it doesn't get violent.

I agree. Although I do not live in a border state like you do, I think something needs to be done and, whether people agree with me or not, I think signing of that bill is a step in the right direction

From an immigrant's perspective, sounds like a worst piece of legislature to pass. Volunarily, I just recently became a citizen, but I was elegible to become one long ago. Yet, I can't imagine carrying my alien card on me at all times, that just spells trouble, as you are pretty much screwed if you ever lost it. Secondly, it does create racial profiling, I can't imagine how I would feel if someone stopped me and required me to show my ID just because I don't look "American" enough.

As an immigrant, you are already constantly reminded of your immigration status, this just pushes the line.

You seem to be insufficiently Amurrican. PAPERS PLEASE. :caution:

Seems like a stupid plan to me. Divisive and most probably unenforceable.

I'll give you the same advice my old director gave me. "Kid, you look young enough to be in high school; if anyone asks you anything - JUST TELL THEM YOU ARE A VOLUNTEER."

LOL thanks Mikey. Everything turned out ok but the state BOP decided to have an impromptu visit as well. I have never seen people do outdates that fast.

I understand your viewpoint chebs, but seriously, what is wrong with being asked for your ID after you commit a crime or get pulled over? I read the bill and no where in there does it say that police officers can randomly ask people for identification. Most likely, these things will be enforced at routine traffic stops and when people break the law. Furthermore, I do not see a problem with asking for proof of citizenship to obtain state funded healthcare, food stamps, etc. Non-citizens do not get these rights. Maybe it is a crappy bill, maybe it isn't, but Jan Brewer asked Obama for help several times to no avail. I am glad she has his attention so that the flapping government heads can actually start doing something about this problem. Arizona can barely afford to fund its own poor citizens much less the citizens of other countries.

This is an interesting thought and commentary about humanity. A simple imaginary line through a continent combined with whose vajayjay you popped out of determines how worthy of aid you are. Not picking on you at all. Just a random thought. We are evolutionary adept towards being xenophobic. It's just human to hate on the people that show up needy...used to be living in a cycle of hopelessness in Mexico...they just want a better life. Granted, some are criminals. Though it should be noted that they are more prone to criminal activities being as though they can't find legal work in the land of wealth.

I figure we should just bite the bullet and annex Mexico. Originally the Scots and Irish were victims back in the mid 1800s (hence my last name is Frazier rather than Fraser...it sounds German...and more palatable to the dudes at Ellis Island back in the day...can't have no Lace Curtain riffraff infecting the new continent...)...then the Italians after that...a bunch of no good gangsters, all of them, right...now the African descended folk are being assimilated...tons of white people still fear them...but we got a black president, so its progress...and, once they are afforded the same opportunities over time...the Hispanic folk will assimilate, too...

But the longer we wait, the longer it will take for them to assimilate. As long as the wealth disparity is there, they will keep wanting to come on up. Hell, if I was Mexican, I'd sneak into the US, too.

Hopefully in like 400 years we'll all have crossbred to the point where we are the same color...and the world economy will be more fair...like that will ever happen...

You know what? I agree with you. The problem lies with the lack of pressure on Mexico to fix its country. People are starving in the streets while Spring Break partiers are living it up at million dollar condos and resorts. It is definitely sad to think about. And, yes, we may all be a bit xenophobic and perhaps this is a product of evolution, but you have to admit that in this economy, the cost is just too much to bear. I would love to save the world, but we need to be practical. Besides, the immigrants are being exploited! They get paid **** to work hard jobs that some Americans don't want to do. They live in squalor and they cannot communicate with the dominant culture. It is SAD...and something needs to be done. Our government has swept it under the rug enough. It SUCKS on the front lines where people are protesting everyday (both pro and con) and spouting off in the workplace or where immigrants actually laugh at you when you don't speak spanish and talk **** about people in Spanish. It is just too tense.

I agree with you. I have immediate family (aka still living) who have immigrated but I really don't believe we are strong enough to save the world in addition to ourselves. Plus Pharmexp, we do live in a border state. Lol. Everyday I wake up 90 miles from Fidel and Raul. Lol

I hate getting into political debates with friends but it's not about saving someone, it's about bordering on racial profiling.

Lea, while the bill doesn't imply that anyone can just be randomly cardered, nevertheless, it does require an immigrant to carry an alien card on them at all times. Like I mentioned before, that would be a major hassle as a loss of that card requires spending a few hundred dollars and significant effort to replace it, it's not like loosing your state ID or your credit card. It is a really big deal since you esentially need that card for any sort of paperwork - school or even work related.

Plus, the simple thought that I would have to carry something on me to identify myself as an immigrant is somewhat ludicrious. That's like if someone was required you to carry a card iderntifying your sexual orientation.

I understand. I don't really like talking politics either. I guess one of the reasons I brought up the subject is because I like to get viewpoints from everyone and I completely respect your opinion esp since it is something you know first hand. It keeps things in perspective for me. I guess its just hard because on one hand I feel like those who come here illegally sort of undermind the system and the people who did go trhough the necessary steps, but then on the other hand it's messed up that some people are so hard off they're willing to risk everything. Sorry I don't make sense because I'm on my cell phone. Lol
