You're robbing yourself by refusing to read wikipedia. I understand that someone can "write whatever they want" but it's peer-edited (and they're quick!)
As an example, we all imbibed a few adult beverages one night and started talking about where we were from. I mentioned Selena, and no one knew who she was (while she has idol status here). I went to her wikipedia page and it said something to the effect of "thousands of fans visit her statue each month."
Nuh-uh. No way.
I edited it to say "hundreds of fans visit her statue each year."
I got a warning and they put it back the way it was.
I then, blurry-eyed, typed in that tens of people visit the statue each month. My wikipedia account was subsequently banned.![]()
There's a difference between reading it and citing it as a source. I've been told my numerous professors in pharmacy and undergrad: don't even think of citing wikipedia. I agree with that, to think that it's ok to cite wikipedia in a professional academic environment is sort of out of this world. What's next - citing twitter posts ?
