Anyone know what to do for swollen lymph nodes??

I had a nasty cold the past two days and then today I woke up and have really swollen glands in my neck and inguinal (yep, I just broke out that word) area.

I know its probably from the cold... but man, these ones in my neck make me feel like I'm choking! All I've heard to do is take pain relievers (which I'm not a fan of personally) or use warm compresses... anything else??

Keep an eye on it and go to a doctor if it gets worse. My dad had a cold a while back and got a horrible infection in one of his lymph nodes, where it looked like a golfball coming out of his neck He had to get some minor surgery and stayed in the hospital over night getting it drained and stuff. He says he still doesn't have full feeling in part of his neck. Not trying to scare you or anything 😛

Rochester has a LOT of waitlist movement. My host there interviewed in Feb and got off the waitlist. Apparently, half the class gets in off the waitlist.

I'm so proud of them. We are a bit of an endangered species. Having caloric immunity can be nice, but you do feel a little quirky when your backpack doubles as a gravity enhancement device for protection against windy days.

The concrete was plenty warm, and my toes were happy. It might actually rain today, which we need desperately. It's already about 70, at 8 am. Trees are budding out, mountain laurel (smells like grape bubble gum) is starting to bloom, and spring is in the air.

Columbia weather report... my boyfriend and I stayed inside and looked at the eclipse from his nicely heated house because it was waaaaay too cold to stand outside. Like 10 minutes before it happened, he's like should we go outside and I shot him this look to make him say ....oh, right. It was still pretty quality watching from the window though.

Take care of yourself! My daughter (12) was just home for 2 days. Monday she came home from school just fine, and within a half-hour, she was sound asleep. She had a headache, malaise (love that word), and body aches, but nothing I could work with - no fever or anything.

Nastiness is definitely going around! The good news is that it doesn't seem to be lasting for a horribly long time.

As for dealing with sick people - it's fine when they're really sick (unless you have to clean up after them). It's when they're a bit sick and they cling to you like a wet paper towel and just expect you to be a cook and maid...ugh!😉

One of the first recipes I learned as a kid was off of a Nestle's package for chocolate chip cookies. I loved making and eating the dough, which is almost always preferable to the actual cookie. My mom would tell me I was going to get sick…'course I never did haha.

So I've been having these recurring dreams that last few nights where I get acceptances to various schools, houston, mercer, utmb, etc. It's funny the one last night was for houston and had they had these golden lists posted in the hall with names on them. Needless to say I began to run around and scream when I saw my name on it. It's quite depressing when I wake up and realize it's just a dream. Anyone ever have any awesome dreams and are pretty bummed out when you wake up and realize it was just a dream?

I woke up this morning thinking about my lab... I was like hmm do I need to coat more flasks w/ gelatin so I can use them tomorrow? Today I saw gelatin flasks so I was like okay I dreamt it... but my grad student was like no he made you more... I'm so delirious.

He was super embarrassed and just kept saying "sorry, yes, sorry!"

We are supposed to have a winter storm watch until 6 tomorrow night. My mom is a teacher back in STL and she was like yah every school got called off today... and honey don't go if the roads are bad! I'm like mom, don't you understand that most professors don't care?? My university has called off school maybe 3 or 4 times in its history and I was lucky enough to experience one of them (16 inches of snow) so I doubt I'll get another. The show must go on.

I actually grew up in Ohio, amd my brother and my in-laws still live there. My mother grew up in Michigan, so yes, I know what it is like! I also like to call my family members on days like today. I think our high was 84 today. My grandmother has like 3 feet of snow, and my brother has ice. 😉

My daughter went wading in my parents' pool after she went for a big long bike ride. It's warmed up since then. Maybe she can swim this weekend.

Alright so I'm considering mcat review options. Kaplan course is kind of expensive, but they seem to give you a lot of stuff. I've heard about examkrackers too, but don't know too much. What do you guys think, self study or fork out the dough? A lot of the material was so long ago I'm not sure I even remember it anymore, and the structure provided by a class may not hurt.

I was in your situation and did the online kaplan cause the nearest center was pretty far. i really liked how flexible it was. you can spend as much or as little time on subjects as you want and you have access to a lot of tests/questions.

i think the account stays active for 6 months. you can pace yourself however you wish.

I thought it was alright. It's a voice track with animated illustrations. I'm a very independent learner though, so it worked out for me.

I hadn't taken those classes for 4 like four years when I started the Kaplan review. I hardly remembered anything. When I took the actual test though, PS and BS were my strongest sections.

I went from a 22 on the diagnostic to a 34.

I should also note that I tried studying first with the Exam Krackers books. I felt like it had no direction and I got really frustrated with it. I don't think you can go wrong with either of the Kaplan courses.

The EK course was a part of a summer program I did (and was rather accelerated to fit into the timeframe of the course), so I dunno if it was an accurate representation of their real class, but I felt like they focused too much on content and not enough on strategy. I know you said that structured content instruction might not be a bad idea, but I think content without strategy for a test like the MCAT is a little silly.

I would recommend Kaplan without reservation, however, mostly for the strategy stuff, but also for all the materials they give you (especially the flash cards). In fact, all my friends that did Princeton Review told me they wish they had done Kaplan instead (sample size = 2-3). Also, Kaplan does their share of content instruction as well. (I don't work for Kaplan, I swear) 👍

Get the EK set, the AAMC tests, and maybe something like Kaplan's online problem set or something if you run out of practice questions. IMO, EK kicks Kaplans *** all over the street. You've already taken the courses AND the MCAT....you do not need to take a "class" unless you're a total slacker...and even then its very time and money inefficient. The ratio of people dissatisfied to satisfied with those classes is way too high. Don't spend too much time on verbal...you did well and its the hardest section to improve for most people. EK books are good at focusing on what's important, and try to condense concepts for easy application. The MCAT is all about your ability to reason.

I only used EK and the AAMC tests. I studied PT for a couple months and FT for 3 weeks. I was a non-sci major and had taken my intro bio classes probably 8 years before the test and out scored my two bio major friends on the bio section😉.

Possible, the other option is that she didn't put the effort in because she thought it wasn't worth it. You'd find both types of people I'm sure. The teachers are a bit of a crapshoot. My own friend stopped going to the classes because she thought they were useless. I'd rather spend that time on a quality set of practice problems than passively listening to someone bark monotonously on concepts that may or may not be on the test. If you buy the EK books you get access to the forums...there is an errata section, and there are profs for each subject who can answer any questions. Almost all the confusions I had had already been asked and answered when I read the forums. That said, everybody learns differently. Just try to keep it simple.

that one with the boat reminds of when that tropical storm hit when I was in highschool. One of my friends had a speed boat in her driveway and we were able to go drive around the neighborhood. And I'm sorry lacrosse if you ever say cheers at the end of a post again we may have to consider disciplinary action up to and including execution 😛

this is why the online course was good. areas that you didn't need to focus on you could skip ahead and there were no crap teachers.

i just liked kaplan's multidisciplinary approach. listening, multiple problem sets, quizzes, strategy, reading. if you do great with just books awesome, but i didn't like the style of EK. i didn't want to make my own notes or look for more problem sets outside. learning the material was time consuming enough. i think kaplan's practice tests were harder than the real MCAT as well.

i really put in the effort and did everything that they told me to. it worked for me.

You guys make some good points, I appreciate the input. I'm going to go ahead and order one of the EK books and see how I like it. I'll probably try one of the aamc practice tests and see where I stand before making any final decisions. If I do go with kaplan I'll probably go like Jolie with the online stuff.
