Anyone know what to do for swollen lymph nodes??

I had a nasty cold the past two days and then today I woke up and have really swollen glands in my neck and inguinal (yep, I just broke out that word) area.

I know its probably from the cold... but man, these ones in my neck make me feel like I'm choking! All I've heard to do is take pain relievers (which I'm not a fan of personally) or use warm compresses... anything else??

Keep an eye on it and go to a doctor if it gets worse. My dad had a cold a while back and got a horrible infection in one of his lymph nodes, where it looked like a golfball coming out of his neck :scared: He had to get some minor surgery and stayed in the hospital over night getting it drained and stuff. He says he still doesn't have full feeling in part of his neck. Not trying to scare you or anything 😛

haha so you're saying if at any time I appear to have a bull's neck like I have diphtheria then there might be a problem...

No weird neck shape as of yet. 👍

I think something is going around my lab... my grad student today said he had a cold w/ the funny nodes too... screw people trying to get all this work done and infecting people along the way... whoops, I'm a hypocrite 🙄

man, diphtheria is like one of the coolest diseases. the whole coating of the pharynx with the bacteria and destruction of the throat if you try to remove it.

doesn't get enough play, IMO.

And it's one of the only bacteria that I remember in great detail from Micro...

...I can still hear my lab teacher saying "smells like garlic!"

WTF? I mean come on, is that not the biggest cop out? And they're all doing this. If knowing what the problems are and then once being elected starting to look for solutions is the qualifications for being president, maybe I should run 😉

They're politicians...don't expect them to be good at anything except being politicians.

Or you just don't have enough insulation to keep you warm...

Sassy. Not like I need one, but you just gave me a legit reason to pound away at chocolate goodness in any form or fashion.

Yeah I've been meaning to ask you guys how you fared during that last ice age ....**Rim shot please....** :meanie:

Now I really hope you get into med school, ‘cause I just don't think the comedy gig is gonna work out…..When's the new int?

Yeah... I got 3 scholarships from my undergrad...

Don't forget to climb Mt. Everest before you hit 25🙄......😛

Rochester has a LOT of waitlist movement. My host there interviewed in Feb and got off the waitlist. Apparently, half the class gets in off the waitlist.

Half??? Wowza.

Columbia, MO:..... 14 degrees!!!

Off to take my first test of the semester... woot. 👎

McMurdo, Antarctica....9 degrees.
Galveston....67 degrees

Now, I've been to Alaska, and might move there some day, but the SE part is temperate and actually warmer in winter than Columbia....but I do hope your test went well🙂.

Colonoscopy.

Yeah, and the name is ominous too....although rabies is a nasty bad boy as well.

Speaking of goodness... my boyfriend and his roommate ate all of that red velvet cake in 2 days... I really wish you could meet my boyfriend... it'd be like your long lost twin.

It was even colder here this morning. I think if I went outside w/ wet hair, once I got to class there would have been icicles!

Meh... enough people have already seen my backside... what's one more?

P.S. Who downrated us to 4 stars?? Jealous people...

Crap! and comedy was going to be my fall back career 😀

Not real sure, they'd call me....

Well kudu I guess lacrosse could use you as a substitute boyfriend if she gets into utmb

I'm so proud of them. We are a bit of an endangered species. Having caloric immunity can be nice, but you do feel a little quirky when your backpack doubles as a gravity enhancement device for protection against windy days.

P.S. Who downrated us to 4 stars?? Jealous people...

I can only think of a few personal qualities someone could have that would lead them to not admire this thread. None of them are flattering.

Well kudu I guess lacrosse could use you as a substitute boyfriend if she gets into utmb

More like she'd be with Oxfam or Save the Children and I'd be the famine stricken Third World guy she supports for a few pennies a day. Its ok though, I'd have no problem signing any waiver needed to be included in her bakery's clinical trials.

Opening a bakery would be so cool... there's a place in STL that just bakes cupcakes... that's it. I wanna work there!

page 3?? Oh, no!

Well, here's the San Antonio weather report...I walked outside in my bare feet last night to try to see the eclipse. We had broken clouds which obscured the moon until it was too late. The concrete was plenty warm, and my toes were happy. It might actually rain today, which we need desperately. It's already about 70, at 8 am. Trees are budding out, mountain laurel (smells like grape bubble gum) is starting to bloom, and spring is in the air.

haha thank you for saving us.

Columbia weather report... my boyfriend and I stayed inside and looked at the eclipse from his nicely heated house because it was waaaaay too cold to stand outside. Like 10 minutes before it happened, he's like should we go outside and I shot him this look to make him say ....oh, right. It was still pretty quality watching from the window though.

Rain there? haha... freezing rain here. The sound of people scraping ice off their windshields woke me up today. And everyone is getting sick some way or another... my Psychology senior capstone teacher is coming down w/ the flu and said the roads are too icy for class... I'm down w/ that.

It's nice to have the instaters looking out for our little 'ol thread 🙂

We had a clear night for the eclipse actually, though I'd forgotten about it until it was almost over

Now I think we're looking at a grey cool day in the ATL....

Yeah lots of sick people here too. Ugh, I mean come on, who wants to deal with sick people :meanie:....actually may be coming down with something myself 🙁

Take care of yourself! My daughter (12) was just home for 2 days. Monday she came home from school just fine, and within a half-hour, she was sound asleep. She had a headache, malaise (love that word), and body aches, but nothing I could work with - no fever or anything.

Nastiness is definitely going around! The good news is that it doesn't seem to be lasting for a horribly long time.

As for dealing with sick people - it's fine when they're really sick (unless you have to clean up after them). It's when they're a bit sick and they cling to you like a wet paper towel and just expect you to be a cook and maid...ugh!😉

Nice. The house idea sounds pretty good…really cheap too. Of course, the day after you close SA will call🙄. What do you dislike so much about being a CPA?

Opening a bakery would be so cool... there's a place in STL that just bakes cupcakes... that's it. I wanna work there!

One of the first recipes I learned as a kid was off of a Nestle's package for chocolate chip cookies. I loved making and eating the dough, which is almost always preferable to the actual cookie. My mom would tell me I was going to get sick…'course I never did haha.

Do you guys keep a handcranked shortwave radio in the house haha?

So I've been having these recurring dreams that last few nights where I get acceptances to various schools, houston, mercer, utmb, etc. It's funny the one last night was for houston and had they had these golden lists posted in the hall with names on them. Needless to say I began to run around and scream when I saw my name on it. It's quite depressing when I wake up and realize it's just a dream. Anyone ever have any awesome dreams and are pretty bummed out when you wake up and realize it was just a dream?

Man I've been having those symptoms too... yesterday when I was teaching, I felt super light headed and had to sit down and get a soda just to get some sugar. It was funny cause the students would actually walk over to me to ask questions rather than make me get up.

I woke up this morning thinking about my lab... I was like hmm do I need to coat more flasks w/ gelatin so I can use them tomorrow? I couldn't remember if this guy in my lab asked yesterday if he could use mine or if I just dreamt it... Today I saw gelatin flasks so I was like okay I dreamt it... but my grad student was like no he made you more... I'm so delirious.

Just thought I'd mention that I think I'm going to have to go turn on the a/c. It's sunny and 81 today, and it's a little warm in the house. 🙂

Oh, this is no where near record-setting. That would've been 1996, when my daughter was 16 days old, and we went to the zoo. It hit 100 that day.😱

Enjoy your ice.🙄

haha you really are turning into another myKudu. I like walking to class in sleet, okay?!?!? haha I was walking to my 11 o'clock class and this dude was wearing dress shoes and trying to walk way too fast... he was slipping everywhere right in front of me so I grabbed his arm and was like are you okay?? He was super embarrassed and just kept saying "sorry, yes, sorry!"

We are supposed to have a winter storm watch until 6 tomorrow night. My mom is a teacher back in STL and she was like yah every school got called off today... and honey don't go if the roads are bad! I'm like mom, don't you understand that most professors don't care?? My university has called off school maybe 3 or 4 times in its history and I was lucky enough to experience one of them (16 inches of snow) so I doubt I'll get another. The show must go on.

You've never lived in the south. If there is even the rumor of ice, they clamp down like there's no tomorrow, with everyone running to the grocery store to buy bread and milk. Not real sure what's up with the bread and milk stuff, I generally buy frozen pizzas and beer when the storms come down 👍

I actually grew up in Ohio, amd my brother and my in-laws still live there. My mother grew up in Michigan, so yes, I know what it is like! I also like to call my family members on days like today. I think our high was 84 today. My grandmother has like 3 feet of snow, and my brother has ice. 😉

Life is good!

haha but Missouri is tricky... we get super hot weather, and super cold weather, so people just get confused.... which turns into AWFUL driving. Maybe I'm spoiled w/ my 4-wheel drive 👍

Wooooo snowwwwww

My daughter went wading in my parents' pool after she went for a big long bike ride. It's warmed up since then. Maybe she can swim this weekend.

The actual high yesterday was 85. It's supposed to be in the upper 70s all weekend (a cold front went through last night).😛

 That's awesome! I would drive that to school even if it wasn't snowing.

Alright so I'm considering mcat review options. Kaplan course is kind of expensive, but they seem to give you a lot of stuff. I've heard about examkrackers too, but don't know too much. What do you guys think, self study or fork out the dough? A lot of the material was so long ago I'm not sure I even remember it anymore, and the structure provided by a class may not hurt.

I was in your situation and did the online kaplan cause the nearest center was pretty far. i really liked how flexible it was. you can spend as much or as little time on subjects as you want and you have access to a lot of tests/questions.

i think the account stays active for 6 months. you can pace yourself however you wish.

Yeah I'd seen that option on their website, it looks like you get almost the exact same thing as the classroom course for the most part. How are the lessons for the online class? Did you feel they cover the material adequately? It's cheaper, but not that much cheaper, and the main reason I'd want to pay all that money would really be for the instruction time for gen and o chem, probably a bit for physics. It's been like 3 years since I'd had them and remember very little.

I thought it was alright. It's a voice track with animated illustrations. I'm a very independent learner though, so it worked out for me.

I hadn't taken those classes for 4 like four years when I started the Kaplan review. I hardly remembered anything. When I took the actual test though, PS and BS were my strongest sections.

I went from a 22 on the diagnostic to a 34.

I should also note that I tried studying first with the Exam Krackers books. I felt like it had no direction and I got really frustrated with it. I don't think you can go wrong with either of the Kaplan courses.

I did both Kaplan and ExamKrackers. The EK course was a part of a summer program I did (and was rather accelerated to fit into the timeframe of the course), so I dunno if it was an accurate representation of their real class, but I felt like they focused too much on content and not enough on strategy. I know you said that structured content instruction might not be a bad idea, but I think content without strategy for a test like the MCAT is a little silly.

I would recommend Kaplan without reservation, however, mostly for the strategy stuff, but also for all the materials they give you (especially the flash cards). In fact, all my friends that did Princeton Review told me they wish they had done Kaplan instead (sample size = 2-3). Also, Kaplan does their share of content instruction as well. (I don't work for Kaplan, I swear) 👍

fo sho. the time that you would spend making something similar is just crazy. they were awesome!! the study formula sheets were good too.

 sure sure...haha, yeah I heard about problems with examkrackers, but it was mostly hearsay. I had a friend who did princeton and never finished it, because he didn't like it. The good thing about kaplan also is that they have a scheduled class pretty close to my house that I could start in march and take the mcat early June.

A separate issue is that I had a number of interivews and waitlists this time around and am wondering about how bad I'll feel about waisting 2 grand if I get into a school...

i think you'd be so happy getting into school that the 2k would be insignificant, especially if you think about it all in the long term.

the better your re-app plan, the more likely to get in off a waitlist.👍

I had the examkrackers books and found them to be extremely helpful in narrowing down what was important and explaining things better (except perhaps o chem). I'm not much of a review course kind of girl, though...I'd rather just do it on my own.

:luck:

If you're able to do studying on your own, I think you can sign up for the online course and it's a few hundred dollars cheaper. But it's been several years since I took the MCAT, so things may have changed since then. Anyway you look at it, it is still expensive, but hey, that few hundred dollars can buy you a pretty nice dinner, should you get in off the waitlist 😀

I'm sort of in between I guess. I always went to class during undergrad as it helped me to hear the material as much to see it, but studying on my own was important as well.

That's very true. I would spend 2 grand in heart beat if it would get me in this time around. If any admissions people are reading this that could be money in your pocket 😛

The online course may work out best, as I'm still going in a few different directions job wise, and I don't know what my schedule is going to be like in the coming months yet.

Get the EK set, the AAMC tests, and maybe something like Kaplan's online problem set or something if you run out of practice questions. IMO, EK kicks Kaplans *** all over the street. You've already taken the courses AND the MCAT....you do not need to take a "class" unless you're a total slacker...and even then its very time and money inefficient. The ratio of people dissatisfied to satisfied with those classes is way too high. Don't spend too much time on verbal...you did well and its the hardest section to improve for most people. EK books are good at focusing on what's important, and try to condense concepts for easy application. The MCAT is all about your ability to reason.

I only used EK and the AAMC tests. I studied PT for a couple months and FT for 3 weeks. I was a non-sci major and had taken my intro bio classes probably 8 years before the test and out scored my two bio major friends on the bio section😉.

I don't know a lot of people who did kaplan, but this one girl I'm friends with was pretty unsatisfied. The thing is that she rarely went to the classes and didn't seem to put the effort in. Even though she took the class twice it helped her little. I'm wondering if the dissatisfied people just don't put the work in, as it's a fairly large commitment. Do you think the people that aren't happy are not putting in the necessary time and just expecting that forking out the money is suppose to give them a high score?

Possible, the other option is that she didn't put the effort in because she thought it wasn't worth it. You'd find both types of people I'm sure. The teachers are a bit of a crapshoot. My own friend stopped going to the classes because she thought they were useless. I'd rather spend that time on a quality set of practice problems than passively listening to someone bark monotonously on concepts that may or may not be on the test. If you buy the EK books you get access to the forums...there is an errata section, and there are profs for each subject who can answer any questions. Almost all the confusions I had had already been asked and answered when I read the forums. That said, everybody learns differently. Just try to keep it simple.

I also found some footage of students trying to walk to class at UTMB during your lovely hurricane season...

And finally... when you can't walk to class, your shuttle bus...

 that one with the boat reminds of when that tropical storm hit when I was in highschool. One of my friends had a speed boat in her driveway and we were able to go drive around the neighborhood. And I'm sorry lacrosse if you ever say cheers at the end of a post again we may have to consider disciplinary action up to and including execution 😛

Just try to keep it simple.

this is why the online course was good. areas that you didn't need to focus on you could skip ahead and there were no crap teachers.

i just liked kaplan's multidisciplinary approach. listening, multiple problem sets, quizzes, strategy, reading. if you do great with just books awesome, but i didn't like the style of EK. i didn't want to make my own notes or look for more problem sets outside. learning the material was time consuming enough. i think kaplan's practice tests were harder than the real MCAT as well.

i really put in the effort and did everything that they told me to. it worked for me.

You guys make some good points, I appreciate the input. I'm going to go ahead and order one of the EK books and see how I like it. I'll probably try one of the aamc practice tests and see where I stand before making any final decisions. If I do go with kaplan I'll probably go like Jolie with the online stuff.

Cheers  haha, kidding....😛

Words hurt you know  It's ok, I understand that your lashing out is only a cover for your jealousy at the sheer awesomeness that comprises my sense of humor...it's not the first time it's happened

And I don't need chocolate cake, I've got a two year old twinky somewhere under my bed that I'm getting ready to go find! 😛

I do believe I have been bitchslapped….very nice. I hope you get UTMB, you never know when you might "accidentally" fall off the seawall ne'er to be seen again, but only after you bake some serious brownage.

The most popular student activist group at Roch: http://youtube.com/watch?v=b2IYC7t1-CA

Very chic formal wear for the Roch clime. If you can get a pair of these red ones with stiletto heels you'll be a hot topic on campus.

It can't be as fun to make fun of Rochester since I don't actually go there...
