A few recent experiences have my gears turning:
  1. My parasitology professor showed us some National Geographic footage from when he was part of their team hanging out in the Amazon and studying the Yanomami. His stories were amazing. Dude rivals the most interesting man in the world.
  2. Reconnected with an old friend and found out he became an orthopedic surgeon. The better part of his life these days is spent traveling and teaching surgical fellows how to do a procedure he invented.

These guys have me wondering...

What is the most unusual or adventurous career path you are aware of for someone with an M.D.?

An orthopod I worked for was close friends with a guy that moved to Nepal and taught physicians in Nepal how to do surgeries for cataracts and glaucoma for the Himalayan Cataract Foundation with Dr. Ruit. Not something I could really do early in my career because of debt and family responsibilities, but definitely something I've thought about doing right before or during retirement.

Bobby Brown, third baseman for the NY Yankees in the 40s and 50s.
Ron Taylor, relief pitcher for the NY Mets in the late '60s

There have been several astronauts with MD degrees.

Old AT Still was an MD who founded Osteopathy. Hadda throw that one in.
