The golf tournament will be fun. Might be the only time all year I get to play with our schedule.
I play gholf liek happy gilmore, i can hit the ball far, but thats about it> my short game sucks. I'd love to play in the golf tournament too. We should also get a bball league or pickup games going, maybe a soccer one too. Mikey are you down?

im always down to play ball, I still play pickup games at the RSF gym in Berkeley almost every day, and it's pretty sad but I also play on my old fraternity's intramural team even though I already graduated. I'd also like to get on a city softball team or maybe we can make one up from UOP and join in an SF league. I'm not all that good at golf, cant really hit my drivers yet, but I try. I just hope there's enough time to get all this in...

Hey Guys -- I was just wondering what the parking situation is going to be like. Does the student housing have a garage? Are the rest of you going to be bringing cars?

Parking is a major pain in San Francisco and I wonder if you have to get a permit to park on the street.

Any info is appreciated.

Parking is a pain and you do need a permit if you want to park for more than 2 hours on the street. The price for a permit just went up to $50 each year, but your car has to be registered in the same area you wish to park. A couple students I met at the interview commute from outside SF. Many of them get a monthly parking permit at the Japantown lot (about 8 blocks away) for like $170 i think.

Here's the link to the residential permit info. I believe UOP is area G.

Thanks for the info Sherm. Do you know by any chance if the student housing has a garage?

According to the website, there is an underground parking garage in the complex. I don't know if it's included in the base rate.

http://dental.uop.edu/admissions1/DDS/UOP_apartments.htm

Also, the complex is on Post St, which does not require a parking permit. It's basically the border. Everything north of Post requires one.

Hey UOP class of 2008!
Welcome to UOP..hope you liked the school when u visited! congrats on acceptance...have fun while u can...once school starts, its not gonna end for a long time and be ready to work your butt off...msg me with q's if u have any, I am a 1st yr there right now. Otherwise, enjoy and see u in july.

Mary

BTW, student housing has parking..but its a lottery based system. And you do have to pay additional $$ for parking each month.

P.S. Japantown is $135 a month, there's a shuttle from Cal pacific med center that swings by Japantown and student housing in the morning to pick up students.

Hey guys,

Yester day I saw a presentation at UCLA by dr. Bill Dorfman, the UOP dental graduate who is the lead dentist on the tv show "extreme makeover". Well anyways after giving a great presentation on dramatic cases that he treats on the show, I am amazed at how much a general practicioner can do in terms of making drastic changes to a person's smile. Its really really amazing. Anyways, I know he is a biased opinion but I asked him what school I should go to, UOP, UCSF or Loma Linda and he said without a doubt UOP. He said that none of the other programs compare. So I guess we are making a good choice.

Yeah, that guy donates a ton of money to UOP every year. I think he's their biggest donor at the moment. I also saw him on MTV treating Jessica Simpson's teeth. He ended up referring her to an endo, but instead of her going to the endo's office, he had the endo come into his. I dunno if it's because she's a celeb, but I thought it was pretty unusual.

Dr. Dorfman is an awesome cosmetic dentist, he usually doesn't deal with treatments other than cosmetic dentistry. He's a very savvy businessman as well, founder of one of the largest cosmetic dentistry company, Discus Dental. He was also able to pay all his loans in as little as 6 months all by himself. You'll be hearing a lot about him.

Has anybody heard anything from pacific lately? maye about finaid or the password to get into the accepted students site?

I called about two days ago to make sure they had recieved my official transcripts from Fall semester. They said we'd be getting a load of stuff in March. She said we'd get so much that we'd be sick of dental school before it even started--at this point, I can't imagine that being true.

I got accepted for the UOP class of 2008, but I was wondering . . . do we really have to get B's in all our classes? Do they really care? Doesn't it just matter that I get my degree? I really feel like slacking off and just doing the bare minimum.

hey guys, i know i'm a bit late on this question, but do you know if I have to fill out a new fafsa for dental school if you have already done fafsa all your years of undergrad, or do I just need to do another renewal fafsa? procrastination always gets me....

Bryce, I called about the B grade issue and they are serious.

Mikey, if you've filled out the fafsa last year then you only need to do a renewal.

There are required remedial Saturday sessions for lab classes if grades are too low--not sure about didactic classes. But what dentist wouldn't want stellar hand skills? Making the grade didn't seem to be burdensome to any students I observed. Would say few slacked and most had healthy doses of fun. Maybe Maryh320 can speak to this..

Hey Guys,

Just wondering if anybody has looked into the gym situation. If I remember correctly, Pacific is pretty close to a bunch of gyms. Does anybody have any experience or recommendations on these? I need to get my exercise, and hopefully we will actually have time!

Looking forward to July,

Jess

Jess,

When I visited my friends at the Post Apartments they showed me the gym on the first floor. It is pretty old looking but it had almost everything. They just use that when they workout. There are also tennis courts and a soccer field pretty close, if you play any of those sports. The next time I talk to them I will try to find out if there are any other places that are close. Hope that helps.

What's up guys My name is Nick and I'm going to be going to school with all of you as well this July, I hope it will be a good time. I know I really enjoyed the interview and everything. Also is it true that yarborough's daughter might be in our class too? If that's true I call first dibbs. You guys thought Dugoni's grandson would be first in the class? If i get yarborough's girl It's all over. hehe anyways hope you are all ready to start this stuff but lets remember to have a good time too. See you all in a few months (hopefully from my balcony in the pacific apartments) adios

Welcome jugga, my name is yahya (pronounced yaya). Im gonna be your classmate too. hopefully well have a good time for the next three years. so its yarboroughs daughter not dugonis grandson huh? interesting. hopefully this has some positive effect on our class as a whole. has anyone gotten anything from them lately?

Dugoni's grandson is definitely in the class. Nick was joking about how he thought Yarborough's kid will most likely beat out Dugoni's kid for the top spot.

actually i was saying that by dating yarborough's daughter i could use my abilities and her inside advantage to overtake dugoni's grandson's spot. That way I would be supreme. muwahaha. hehe jk

nick

i heard crazy_sherm is the young Dugoni and JessSB is Yarborough's daughter. :meanie:

HAHA well JessSB if you are yarboroughs daughter tell him hello for me, but don't tell him that I am going to try to date you, that might just be a little awkward. 🙂 haha anyways I guess I am the ass. excited for july. see ya

Damn, who told?! 😡

So crazy_sherm....who is going to take over Dugoni's place in 2006 as Dean???
"11/30/2004-Dugoni will step down as Pacific’s dean in 2006
The University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry has announced that Dean Arthur A. Dugoni, DDS, will step down as dean on June 30, 2006." Academy of General Dentistry

Keep this on the DL, but he's actually not stepping down at all. He's a big Punk'd fan and is taking a page out of Ashton Kutcher's book. Come next year, we'll all have a big laugh at the game he played on all of us.

😉

Official word though is that they have not chosen anyone yet.

Is anyone going to the open house day? I got my invitation in the mail yesterday, but they want $20 to attend. Think it's worth the time?

I was about to ask the same question. I'm not doing anything else that day, but I've already seen the school several times... It is a good day, or just cheesy hype?

I would be going if I was home for Spring Break, if only to get myself more excited about starting! But I'm having surgery down here in SB (second year in a row - last year I got my 3rds removed over spring break!). I think a friend of mine went last year, I'll ask her about if I get the chance....

Tell us about it if any of you guys end up going.

Hey all, congratulations on a great choice. My name is Steve and I am looking forward to starting in July. What does Pacific Pride Day consist of and who is it catered for? Thanks in advance.

I went last year, and you attend a bunch of lectures about dentistry and what the school has to offer. You sit through an admissions counselor session and financial Aid session too, then you eat luch with Dean Dugoni, and he gives a small speech. They take you on a tour, and thats it. Its informative, but if you have to spend a lot of money to go (airplane, hotel, etc), then save the trip. If you are still wishy washy about going there, then go to the pride day. Does anyone know if we have to start collecting teeth from other dentists?

I'm thinking about taking a trip to Costa Rica in June. Anyone been there before? Any tips? All my friends that have gone just rent a 4x4 and drive everywhere. I had originally considered going to Italy, but with the strong Euro, tix are like $1200 RT. Costa Rica is only ~$400.

Oh, I checked with UOP about the laptop they make you purchase. Last year, they were given a Dell d600 with a 40gb harddrive (4.7 lbs, 1.2" thick). They allow around $3000 for the computer.

Sherman

As for Costa Rica, my wife and I went there for our honeymoon in 97 and got a 4x4 and cruised around on the Caribbean side. Super mellow vibe and beautiful country. Only got stopped by AK-47 toting militeens once...

Re: the computers, does Pacific have all their texts online, or do we have to drag books around as well?

😕 Has anyone received their packet for housing yet? When are we supposed to get that?

supposed to get it this month, i haven't received it yet either... i just got a response letter about financial aid tho

Hey, for you locals, can I wait until the end of May to find a place to rent in Marin county or will it be uber difficult by then to find anything? I've been looking on craig's list, and there seems to be a lot out there, but I want the opinion of someone who knows the area better than I do.

I think you will be fine. Athough I've never actually had the experience of renting in Marin, having grown up there I've never heard of any rental shortages.

Do you have any preferences for areas in Marin? I know both Mikey and I grew up there and could probably give you some more detailed advice about the different towns and their schools. I know central Marin the best (San Anselmo, Ross, Fairfax, San Rafael, etc), but that may be further from SF than you want to live.

I think it's a great decision to live in Marin, I loved growing up there. I will actually be in Marin for the first couple weeks of school as I take my time looking for a place in SF. We should carpool!

Let me know if you have any questions, I obviously love talking about Marin. 😀

This guy has some nice pics of Marin:

(The San Anselmo Hill pics are literally right above my parents house in Sleepy Hollow)

I think you should be fine waiting until the end of May. Most places tend to look for people to move in within a week or two anyway. I've rarely been to view an apartment that was not already vacant.

Just out of curiosity, how come you've decided to live in Marin? I understand that Marin is really nice, safe, beautiful, etc. but it's probably one of the more inconvient places to live if you plan on accessing the city. Public transit to SF is not so great, though you can catch the ferry as well if you don't want to take the bus. Driving will cost a lot, CA gas prices combined with a $5 bridge toll and SF parking will really add up.

If you're set on living outside of SF, I would really consider somewhere in the peninsula just south of SF like San Bruno or Milbrae, where there will be easy access to BART. Rent's way cheaper and the area is relatively safe. Weather isn't bad. Commuting from Oakland isn't bad either. You can usually find free rides to the city in the morning at carpool locations. And yes, there are nice parts of Oakland. Just look for something East of the 580 highway and North of Fruitvale.

Jess and Sherm,

Thanks for the replies. We are looking from San Rafael all the way to the bridge. We'll also take a gander at some spots south of SF. But, past friends who've attended Pacific say that there are carpools from Marin county down to school, so it shouldn't be too bad. It'll mean coming to school earlier each day. And, I plan to take my motorcycle in to town every now and then. Yarborough said the commute was only 15 min each way and fairly predictable.

I might take you up on the carpool, Jess. At least until you move. By then I'm sure I'll have worked out something else for travel.

The decision to live in Marin county is essentially my wife's. She is the one who has to deal with the neighborhood and the city everyday, so it's important that she's satisfied. And, I heard the schools are excellent in Marin.

So, I'm glad to hear that the end of May will be ok. I didn't want to make the mistake of waiting to the last minute.

When does it cold, how long does it stay cold, and how cold does it get in the bay area?

San Francisco is pretty mild all year round. Winters usually hover around the 50's during the day and around 75 in the summer. It's even warmer inland or in the south bay. It only rains in the winter, so you should be looking at ok weather for riding your bike from April to November. UOP has free motorcycle parking, so you should be set. Just keep in mind its guarenteed someone will cut you off everyday in the city. Too many people in minivans or SUVs talking on their cellphones while driving. Marin tends to rain a little bit more than the rest of the bay area, but its nothing crazy.

JavadiCavity said:

Haha, Cold is a very relative term. Where I lived in Marin (a little inland) the were only a few nights when it would freeze, and then the day time temp will get up to around 50 (mid-forties would be really cold). The areas closer to the bay (Sausalito) are tempered more by the water and I doubt that it ever gets below freezing.

So if you consider this cold, it starts around December and ends in Feb. Last week it reached 80 at my parents house! We really don't have a winter, kind of just an extended fall and spring.

It has snowed a couple times on Mt. Tam, and once when I was five it "snowed" (a really light dusting) on my birthday at my house!
But if you want a winter you can drive three hours to Tahoe, it's beautiful. I'm personally trying to figure out how I'm going to afford at least one ski trip next winter...

About the commute - Dr. Yarborough is correct, although it can vary depending on how far you live from the 101. My mom used to work at CMPC (the hospital across from Pacific) so I have some experience with it. Carpooling is the way to go - save gas and also when you carpool with 3 or more people the bridge toll is free. If I can't find a better way, I'm going to ride in with my mom's old carpool (they have a parking permit to the elusive CMPC parking garage too!).

Alright, I'll stop rambling on about Marin... I should be studying for finals! 🙁

Jess

just wanted to put my two cents worth in about apartments/renting in marin.... There are some great new apartments on 4th street in san rafael that some friends of mine have been living in for a while. They are very convenient, easy access to 101, in the heart of all the shops and farmers market on thursday nights, and in one of the safer areas of san rafael. Living around that area is a little pricey, but still probably a bit less than living in SF. Greenbrae is where I grew up (right south of san rafael), which is a really nice place to live as well, but would probably cost you and your family more money.
about the weather, marin is much more mild than sf, and stays warmer longer in the spring/summer. I think it has to do with the marin headlands blocking the cold air from the bay... I remember when it snowed in marin tho, that was crazy! We went up to Mt. Tam and went sledding at like 6 in the morning. Good times.
and jess, ill be a driver for ski trips to Tahoe, I recently got a 4runner so I've been heading up there a lot this past season.

I'm there! I have family friends with a cabin that they rent out cheap ($100 a night, sleeps 8) hopefully they would trust a bunch of dental students! I'm trying to save up some money for new skies too - I love Tahoe!

Javadi - just a word about San Rafael - look into the particular schools there because they usually rank lower than most in Marin... I'm sure you're doing all of that research though.

Anybody else get this? I'm eagerly awaiting any news from Pacific, esp. financial since I had a little freak out session yesterday about how much debt I'm going into. What did the letter consist of Mikey?

Also - anyone else notice how much more UCSF budgets for living expenses than Pacific? And the rent is quite a bit cheaper over there in the Richmond. oh well, I guess I'm already used to living as a student - I'm looking forward to the day when I can go to a nice restuarant and not feel guilty.

I got it, but it wasn't very exciting... it just said my file is complete and ready for review, and they will begin to mail award packets by April.

I think the Pacific living expense budget is ridiculous. I don't spend much money, but if I live by that budget, I'll feel guilty for buying a pack of gum!

I think I know why the UCSF area is cheaper. I went there for the interview and that area SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS. So many vacant apartments and no good shops or restaurants like on fillmore. After I left UCSF I just wanted to leave. If they assume thats where you are living I can definitely see why its cheaper.
