Pacific U (Part II): Roll Call and Info Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hmmmhhh... I haven't received that mail yet...

Ok - I have been doing some checking on dates... If "G" notified Jon Erik on 2/28/07, but the waitlist was generated 2/15/07 - something doesn't fit. To be honest - I really trust "G" - Some of us on the Pacific thread have known each other for nearly a year -

What are your thoughts??? Should I question Kent about knowing a friend who declined her seat on Feb 28th - especially considering that no one appears to have received that seat from the waitlist - even after I was assurred there are no seats being removed for deferred students. Man - I just want them to be straight with us -

Moral of the story - I miss Vanessa...

Was that a typo, or was the waitlist actually generated on 2/15? Because if it was then it does make sense that there might not be any movement yet. I think you meant 3/15 though which does make it confusing. I think you should just go ahead and ask what's up. Maybe there is a few week grace period where people can decline but then change their minds and still get in so they aren't "official" declines yet. Who knows? All I know is it's frusterating😕 I imagine even more so for you knowing your sooooo close. Good luck!

I'm sure the admissions office is being straight with everyone, but I would guess that they are simply bogged-down, inefficient, etc. (possibly because of Vanessa leaving), which is the reason for the delay. When, after waiting several weeks following my interviews, I did not hear from other schools to which I applied, I called the head of admissions of each school and asked him/her for the scoop on my status. Most of them were glad that I called, and after updating me on my status, they apologized for the delay and explained that is was due to their heavy workload.

I would suggest calling the admissions office directly. You may not get an answer, but hey, you're not getting an answer anyway, right? But on the flip side, you may get an answer (most likely that you've been accepted), and you can put your mind at ease.

Just a suggestion. Good luck!

Hey guys...

That is no typo Rach... The first Waitlist letter was sent out Mid February - and my letter was actually dated Feb 15th, 2007.

I think the staightforward approach is definitely the best Max... I am exploring the situation - posting out loud if you will.

Should I inquire about the method for rescinding a seat? I never really thought about a grace period existing for giving up one's seat - that may indeed be an issue for delay.

What irks me - is knowing about the seat being given up on the 28th - but a new letter - dated 15 days later shows no mention of the seat...

I think a tactful email to Kent, stating the issue about knowing someone giving up their seat, and politely inquiring about my position would be best.

Any other thoughts?

Go for it! Your inquiring into the status of your admission will have no bearing on their decision to admit or deny you. And until you hear the official word, take solace in the fact that you are numero uno on the waitlist, which means you're in!

Hello Guys,
I understand that waiting is really not interesting and all the same I encourage everyone on the waitlist not to give up. It is not over until it is all over. I know for sure that the admission committee are doing their best to serve in the best interest of you all as an individual and also collectively. Just be patient and everything will fall into shape. We love you all and we don't mean to make any body's life miserable with the waiting. Like I said before, I have been in a similar situation before and I am so glad to tell us that my faith in Christ was the only thing that kept me going. In a situation like this, i enocurage you to stand firm and remain positive even when nothing makes sense to ya.

whenever you are in doubt you can always send e-mail or call the admission office. I know the guys there and they are all awesome and i know they will have a word for you.
Thanks and I hope all turns out great for each one of us. However, no matter what happens just know that the best is yet to come. I will like to close my writing tonight with a quote from my favorite writer Dale Carnegie and hopefully that will bring some re-assurance your way that it is not yet over until it is all over.

"Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all."
Dale Carnegie

Just to keep everyone informed - I have just sent an email to Kent - in this email I communicated the dates "G" provided to us concerning her offer decline. I then inquired about a possible grace period for such a decline. Finally, I inquired as to whether or not an update to the list has been made.

Hopefully Kent will be able to shed some light on the mysterious nature of the Alt. list processing.

Dont worry above! you will hear anything soon. I know that waiting game is sucks, but don't give up! you just need to be patient 🙂

I had a quick question, how many students does this program accept each year? (It's probably on their site, but I'm too lazy to check, since someone maybe knows off the top of their head). I'm planning to apply for the class of '08. Thanks.

Here's a really helpful link to their FAQs:
http://www.pacificu.edu/pharmd/contact/documents/PharmacyFAQs_000.pdf

But to answer the question directly...they accepted 68 for their first class (c/o 2009), then this year's class should have 84. The class you are applying to will have 96 seats. According to the info online, this will be the max going forward.

Ya know - we might want to edit the first post of this thread and add that PDF as a stickie - so many people ask for it - but it is difficult to locate just clicking through Pacific's home page...

On a previously mentioned topic...

I just received an email from Kent - he would like to talk over the phone about the wait list. I sent him a reply w/ my phone number. He stated he would be calling later this afternoon. So hopefully I will have something of note to post later tonight.

~above~

On a side note, anyone here get the invite for the Yahoo group? There are already 30 plus members! That's over 1/3 of the class already getting to know each other. Join!

Just got an email from Kent rescheduling the call for tomorrow... I can imagine there is a lot of work going on at Pacific right now... So the info will have to be postponed.. Such is life 😕

Ladies & Gents - for those of us on the Alt. List - I'm afraid I have some bad news.

After talking with Kent this morning - He explained to me the situation - it is as follows:

Currently - 89 students have active deposits with Pacific U. COP

- Active deposit means that the student is assumed to still have the intention of matriculating in the Fall (so this does not include Gssincom's deposit)

Per a conversation between ACPE reps and Pacific - Pacific U. cannot matriculate any more than 87 students this upcoming Fall.

Kent informed me that Pacific was willing to matriculate 87 (3 more than previously mentioned)

Furthermore - Pacific is unaware of the number of double deposited students - this is obvious due to the school not participating in PharmCAS

If school were to start tomorrow - Pacific would have to Rescind their Acceptance offer to (2) students.

I should point out that Kent was extremely kind and forthcoming. The process of accepting more students than are likely to matriculate is a common practice among professional schools. Typically the deposit / matriculation ratio is 2/3rds... Pacific thus far has had 90 %. This is both positive, and disheartening - all at the same time.

To sum it all up - you can add (2) spots to your waitlist # - because right now, there are 2 students whom are technically accepted, but in reality are not.

Unfortunately, double-, triple-, quadruple-, etc. depositing is fairly common (and unethical, by the way) for applicants who want to secure a spot in a program, but are waiting for a "better offer" from another school. I realize it's easy for me to say this, but I still would not worry too much. It would be extremely shocking to me if all 87 of those students matriculate. A relative of mine who works in the admissions office at another pharmacy school told me that it is not unusual for 10 to 20% (and sometimes higher) of deposited students not to matriculate. Hang in there, it will happen.

Wow... that sucks. I can add 2 to my 73 rank.... Best of luck to the people closer to the top and thanks for stay on top of the issue Above and I hope you'll make make it in.

I am keeping positive about the situation. My GF was not nearly as accepting as I am - accepting more students then could possibly matriculate was too much for her... 😳

Oh well - he did hint that they had more deposits than 89 - so the wait list has been moving - even if we didn't know we were further down the list...

Just as before - lets keep the faith guys - and let it be known that I appreciate the sentiments - post ya later...

I know this probably isn't going to be an issue in August, but if school were to start today and they still had 89 students, how would they decide which 2 people to "kick out?"

My only guess is they would offer 2 students one year to defer and guarantee a spot in the next class. But that better not be me or else I would go crazy!

And this just shows you how competitive p-school admissions has gotten. Hang in there Seth. Wait list #1 is a great spot regardless.

Max and Eddie,
what is more unethical a student depositing at two places or a school accepting more deposits than they have spots for?

I actually cancelled my spot at Pacific(2/28/07 w/ Jon-Erik) once I was accepted at USN(found out late Feb of acceptance and received official letter in early March). So I was never deposited at both schools.

In my opinion another part of the process that is a little screwy is that the school keeps my deposit ($1000) even though I"ll be attending elsewhere. They should at least refund some of it!😉

And on a closing note, ~above~ I know you'll still get in! I am though sorry that your wait is further prolonged!

You're right about schools accepting more deposits than spots. However, it's similar to the practice of airlines overbooking seats; they want to be certain that all seats are filled, and are banking that some passengers will not be on the flight. Yep, it does suck that they keep your deposit, but I guess that's their way of forcing people to pick one school. Again, hang in there, ~above~. You're gold, man!

Not quite sure how similar it is really. Just a few weeks ago Skywest/United Express overbooked a flight I was on and all those that chose to give up their seats actually did so because they were promised a "free ticket" on a future flight. I'm not quite sure I can see Pacific offering the two students that defer a year a tuition free P1 year for their deferral agreement😉

I also doubt that Pacific would give away a free year, but the principle still holds, in that the seats (whether it's an airline or pharmacy school) are overbooked in order to guarantee that every seat is filled. Empty seats = lost $. If natural attrition does not take care of this "overbooking" situation, then people are asked to give-up their seat voluntarily in exchange for some incentive (guaranteed admission the following year, etc). Either that, or the least-qualified of those previously-accepted students would suddenly be disqualified. Or, the school may just decide to accommodate a couple of extra people (which an airline can't really do, unless they put people in the luggage hold or tie 'em to the top of the plane).

Although, if they did offer a free year's tuition, maybe I'd give-up my seat 🙄. Okay, probably not...I'm chomping at the bit to start pharmacy school.

Hello guys,
I do understand the situation here and i encourage all to stay positive. I am pretty sure that some student will soon rescind their seat once they find out of another offer. Above, you will be fine just stay positive and things will take care of it self.

I think OSU just notified the bulk of students regarding acceptances yesterday and today. I bet a bunch of students who prefer the MUCH lower tuition will begin to let Pacific know in the coming weeks. Hang in there!

But the question is, do YOU prefer the much lower tuition than Pacific's? 🙂

Easy guys... (and gals) - there is no need for fronting questions like that - If the situations were reversed, I would be doing the same. Choosing which school to attend is a big decision, one that should not be decided lightly.

On another note - I am pretty sure Pacific would "make an offer you could not refuse" - to at least (2) students... most likely it would be a deferment - they simply cannot take more than 87 - ACPE would not allow it.

Its times like these that test your patience...

Just as an update for those of us still waiting:

No news yet... Its unclear whether or not any of the new acceptees at OSU decided to decline their seat at Pacific... hmmm... maybe I should post and ask?

For those that are accepted to Pacific - has anyone decided to decline?

Anyone else JUST get their financial aid award via email? Here's what I'm about to do. It's my 1st time taking out any type of loans for school so here's what I could figure out:

- Total cost for tuition, fees, and books (aka school stuff): $37,940
Out of this total, work study, sub and unsub. loans cover almost all of that. I just need to accept them. Ok, done.

- I also have ~$17k of Private Loan eligibility. I'm about to go through that "Mylenderlist.com" website to choose the best loan for that remaining $17k.

Then I can sit back and wait for my cash!

Sound about right?

BTW, what kind of interest rates are considered good for private loans? I guess it's between stafford loans, private loans, and Grad PLUS. I'll go through each one and see what fits me best.

OK, just thought I'd update you guys and hopefully others have received their awards too.

Yep, I got my finaid award too via email. Man it looks sooo overwhelming...So once you hit "submit" is there no turning back or what?

I received a letter from Pacific U asking me to fill out background check paper, experiential placement form, etc. One of the sheet says that I need to have
:
"Pharmacy Technician Licensing in the State of oregon (Apply for your Oregon Technician License no later than 6/15/2007). Please note your technician license will expire and require renewal at the end of September 2007. regardless, you must have a technician license when you start school at the end of August. The website is: http://www.pharmacy.state.or.us/pharmacy/licensing.shtml#PHARMACY_TECHNICIANS"

I don't have any license yet. The next PTCB is not until June-August for the 08/27/07 test. The deadline to apply for the current test had already passed ! 😱

This letter was signed by the Interim Dean on 4/20/2007. The deadline for the current PTCB was 03/30/2007. This does NOT make any sense.

The PTCB is not the same as a pharmacy license. that is the Certified Pharmacy technician exam. They are only asking for a pharmacy license which you can apply for anytime and usually would take a month to get to you. You are mistaking the PTCB with the regular pharmacy tech license

No PTCB required as rx22 said. you just need to fill a form and turn it in to Oregon State Board of Pharmacy. They will mail you the license in 2 weeks. You do not need PTCB for this license.

Oh, I got it. Thank you very much.

I miss everyone in this thread. Hope everyone is doing well and my future classmates are not procrastinating on the must-do's before we start school.

Just thought it's funny that as of 5/4, I am a certified pharmacy technician in the state of Oregon! All it took was the application and $35 or so. So much different than CA although OR is changing it to stricter rules in 2008.

I also just finish my Stafford Loan application and just applied for my Grad PLUS loan through Wells Fargo. I chose them since I already have a WF account (hell I used to work there.)

I also called a few apartments in Hillsboro area and am very excited. I plan to live alone so it's going to cost much more than sharing a room, but I need my privacy. So far, I've narrowed it down to 4 places: Tanasbourne Terrace, Hidden Creek Apt, Rock Creek Landing, and Orenco Gardens.

My #1 choice is Orenco Gardens but the price may be too much ($825/mo). My realistic choice is probably Tanasbourne terrace ($688/mo) and everythign else falls in between. I'm visiting end of June to tour each complex and sign a lease then.

OK, just thought I'd share what I've been doing. Anyone else? Hope you guys are finishing off your semester strong and good luck for those still waiting.

Glad to hear things are going well Eddie... I have been in a self - imposed absence from this thread - only because I have not had anything productive to add.

On the Alt. list front - pharmacy2007 will be giving up his seat at Pacific... so that means at least one seat has opened up. So I am now #2 on the actual alt. list.

As for registering for the Tech license and such - did you have to pass a certification test? Or just file for it from the Oregon State Board of Pharmacy?

If I do get in - I will probably end up getting a room off of craigslist - I have a feeling if it does happen - it will be awfully late in the game. Oh well - this is part of the waiting game...

Has anyone heard anything else concerning the wait list? Keep us posted on everyones progress...

~above~

Hey above, I'm sorry you're still waiting...as if a year of stress wasn't enough! As for the Oregon pharm tech license...you just have to be a high school graduate, have $35 dollars, and no felonies. It might not be a bad idea for you to apply, so when you do get your acceptance there is one less thing to worry about. The license expires every September, but Pacific students are required to have it by August, so we'll end up paying $35 this summer, then again in September.

My hubby and I went house-shopping near the Beaverton area, but realized that for what we'd get, it might be worth it just to stay put. The east side of Portland is SO much cheaper! Instead of having a yard the size of my bathroom, we have a big one out here! I'll be commuting 75 minutes each way on the MAX! I guess I'll have plenty of time to study🙂

I feel like such an amateur - my question was already answered in this very same thread - just above these posts... how embarrassing!!!

haha - the waiting isn't really that bad. Last year, no one was accepted off of the wait list until June. The only record of it I could find was Shakeitfast and Itsabouttime. Shakeitfast was originally #23 - and was finally accepted June 30th. There is no record of who was first - or even in the initial top ten that I could find. Eventually - around July 31st Itsabouttime was accepted.

So it could happen soon - or maybe a lot later...

If I stay #1 on the list - but dont get in... I might go crazy... I am contemplating whether or not I should be preparing my application for next year...

that is too bad you aren't in yet but rest assured you'll get in the next few weeks/months so don't worry about next year!

on another note, have you Class of 2010 Pacific folks got your summer Ochem review assignment yet?

hmmm... are we supposed to know organic for Pharm school???

hmmm... are we supposed to know organic for Pharm school???
Hopefully not too much of it🙂 I do remember at the interview day at Pacific that we were told that a Pac professor would send out some important "ochem-to-review this summer" so that P1's would be best prepared for some of their first year classes.

I am glad to see this thread active again... I guess we have all been busy finishing up finals and preparing for next year.

As for me, my biggest dillema is buying a laptop. Anyone else in the same situation? I really like the Dell Latitude that Pacific recommends on there website. Plus it comes with everything they require; including Microsoft Office 2003. I was ready to click "submit" to order it yesterday, and decided not to. I think I am just going to do it, but does anyone else have any good advice about laptops? Sure, I could find a cheaper one, but then would have to add Office for an extra couple hundred dollars. Hmmm... anyone buying the Latitude???

I still have to register to be a tech in the state of Oregon. That is my weekend project. (Along with finishing up my financial aid stuff).

As for housing, I think I will end up at Tanasboure Terrace. There are newer and nicer places, but I really like the location. So, that makes up for it. We'll see though. Things could change. Prices sure have increased in Portland compared to when I lived there just 2 years ago. Geez... the real estate market has been hot out there for some time now!

Pharm47.... glad to hear you'll be a Pacific!!!

Above..... hope to see you there too! I have a feeling you will be there. Hang tight!!

And to everyone else; Have a great summer!!!!!!!

I was THISSSS close to buying a IBM Thinkpad t60 for $700. However, the last minute, I bought a Macbook for $999. A bit pricier than expected but the Mac OS really got me. It's also the most dependable laptop on the market (up with IBM's).

Pharm47: Wow, you really are going to PU! Great to have you on board. 🙂

Above: Must commend you on your patience. I'm rooting for ya. Also, I would email Jon Erik later and ask about the possibility of reapplying. I'm sure there's a way to skip 50% of the application since you're practically in. Seems useless to redo everything.

I picked up a used Ibook not to long ago off of ebay for 200 dollars - its slow, with an 800 mhz G3 - but it does everything I need it to do - it also runs OSX Tiger - which is awesome.

I am not going to keep it though. Its simply not fast enough for what we will be doing at Pacific. I might go with a macbook - My only issue is software...

As for being patient - I am just keeping my eye on the prize - hopefully my day will come. I really cant imagine a school not pulling at least a couple of people from the wait list - even USN has pulled a good amount of people.

P.S. - Org II really blows - my worst grade in the past 3 years of college - thank God its over with...

~above~

Sorry i've been gone 4 a while but am back with good news to those who still want 2 go pacific. I will be declining my seat in pacific and head to USN(Vegas).
Good luck 2 those still waitlisted.

Congrats Tic Tac!!! Was USN your #1 choice??? Also, have you notified Pac U of your decision?

If not - that means I am back to #1 on the actual Alt. List... VERY NICE!!!

Just remember SDN doesn't represent even half of everyone applying to PU. That means many people who choose to decline won't even mention it here. You could already be in! So Seth being #1 also means everyone who put a deposit down CAN indeed matriculate this fall. That 's a slight relief for what MIGHT'VE been a bad situation (too many deposits and not enough seats).

Last thing to cross my fingers for is ACPE granting PU candidate status. Just a few more weeks.
