Well, I WAS gonna ask how to prepare for my pain rotation, but I see that question has already been asked. I am starting my PGY-1 year in July with a month-long pain rotation. So my question is this: wtf does an intern on a pain rotation DO? I can imagine what I will be doing on all my other consult/softer rotations (seeing consults/scutwork/paperwork) but I have never done a rotation in pain and don't know anything about it. Just wondering what might be expected of me when I show up - not knowledge, but duty-wise.

Do you know if this is an inpatient Acute or Chronic consult service, or a chronic pain clinic rotation? Most likely, it will be the later. In that case, you will probably see patients in clinic, try to determine what their pain pattern/syndrome is (or assess change from last visit), and treat accordingly with medications or procedures. I did a Pain clinic month as an intern, and had the same job as the residents on the service. You'll probably get to do a few ESIs, SIJ injections, and maybe facet blocks or MBBs. Review some of your anatomy and exam findings for various causes of low back pain, and review the treatments for MSK vs neuropathic pain syndromes.
