Just 1?
Morning 🙂
Thanks for stopping by the FM forum. Come back any time! 🙂
Freakin stingray put a hole in the mans heart.. He was an entertaining fella.
Crikey...what a way to go. 🙁
A discussion over the fate of Mr. Irwin......Holy crap! He died?
"You think about Steve Irwin and you think of people who are invincible."
That's what I thought too--some sort of animal superhero in dorky shorts.
🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁
BKN, correct me if I am wrong but I recall reading somewhere that the spine of a stingray is very fragile, and tends to break up when you try to extract it.......or perhaps that was sea urchin spines......Indiana isn't exactly a hotbed of marine animal envenomations (although I saw a penile amputation due to a snapping turtle once.....talk about "Crikey!")Yeah, I think the only reported similar death was a 10 year old swimming in Corpus in the 60s. Basically sting rays sit on the bottom, half buried and are shy. If you step on them, they swing their tail up and leave the sting in your foot or ankle.
The 10 year old was swimming in shallows, presumably bodysurfing and got it in the chest for a pneumo. Presumably the same thing happened to Irwin. Poor guy.
Oh, BTW if you treat or are one of the the 1000 people who step on a sting ray each year. The toxin is thermolabile. Put the wound in 110 degree water for a few minutes and the pain will fade. Xray the foot to see if the sting is there (usually will be-it's cartalaginous and radioopaque). Since it has barbs to keep it in, you'll need to open the wound a little and extract it. Irrigate profusely, prophylaxsis for tetanus and bacteria. Salt water wounds get septic incredibly fast. Cover for non-cholerae vibrio.

Ow, ow, oww.......No, I've taken out a bunch of stings. Actually, you are talking about sea urchin spines. Another subject of which I'm sadly expert.
Back in the day (1981), While stationed in NW FL. MsBKN and I took a diving course on base. Up there the open water dives were all deep (60 feet). So the day after we get our cards we drive down to the keys and start having fun. On day 3 take a dive on a very shallow reef. The colors at 10 feet are just unbelievable and we're motoring around having a great time. Suddenly I hear a roaring noise and it gets very dark. Well, I was trained that meant you were about to get run over by a boat, so I jammed myself into the sea bottom and stayed there. The prop noise continued for a long time, but happily nohorrible pain. Finally, I raise my head and look to the side. I'm lying in 3 inches of water as is my bride. I tap her shoulder, she turns to me and gives the perfect WTF? look magnified through her face mask.
We had swum up the reef to the surface. The noise and the dark was the surf. 😳 Then the surge pushed us over the reef and off into the water on the other side. In the process I took about 20 urchin spines in the hand and 5 in the knee. They hurt pretty good, but they are not venomous. We couldn't get back over, the dive boat captain had to motor around to pick us up, muttering about how he had to rescue newbies every week. I got back on board and spent my timeing.
The base dive club gave us a special reef diver's award, which consisted of a sea urchin with spines removed and a pair of tweezers. 😳![]()
And yes, you can't get them out easily. Probably only worth trying if they enter a joint.
Just remember, whatever you do, do not hold your breath. On that note me and the OL are gonna take some scuba classes here in the desert and hopefully get to dive in mexico soon..
dam*it all to h*ll. I am still sick. gah
I'm a dork, but athletic too. Is that possible or is it a paradox?
Oh, and ANOTHER rant.
If you are a guy in the day and age of facebook, Google, and Myspace then DON'T lie about your relationship status to a girl you want to take out on a date. She will surely facebook you AND most likely be able to see your full profile since you are in her metro area. She will then discover that your relationship status is listed as "In a Relationship" and that almost every comment on your wall is from your girlfriend.
There will NOT be a second date.
Ouch! Depending on how confrontational you are, you could print up his facebook page and hand-deliver it to him.
