Can people secure seats at two schools at the same time? I have already paid my deposit at a school I got accepted at but I'm not sure if I'll be able to afford the cost of living at that state and I don't think I'll know if I can fully afford it by the deposit deadline. I might be able to afford the other one so my question is, is it stupid to pay two deposits?

You can I think but look at the big picture. Are you hearing back from multiple decisions? You should wait till near the deposit deadlines so you don’t waste money. It’s forfeiting what could have went towards tuition. It’s nice for schools to have a good idea that you are committed… if you put deposits in for other schools you are holding an interview or acceptance from someone else

yeah, you're right but I don't intend to hold interviews or acceptances from other people it's just that my financial situation is a bit messed up right now. Do schools know by any chance that I secured my seat somewhere else?

I don’t think so until April or what not there’s a certain time when schools can see where else you are currently admitted to

Go to the school that will offer you the best chance of matching your desired specialty (even if it changes down the line). Every school generally awards more $ than you need to live (maxing out loans at my school can leave someone with an extra $10k/year, less at some school more at others).

Just look at the school's estimated budget, then look up rent in the area (not luxurious and not cheap, go for quiet & reasonable priced). Then do a quick budget of how much you spend (school budgeted $350/mo for food but you eat $200/mo? That's an extra $1500 your pocket) etc. If you can't do that share the name of your school and we'll do it for you.

Don't possibly sabotage your potential earnings of 30+ years because of a small factor like this

Could give better advice with rough figures. What's the difference in COL and tuition for both schools per year? What is your desired specialty? To answer your initial question, yes you can hold multiple acceptances at once. Also if your preference is the second school and/because it's cheaper, it's definitely worth it to eat the deposit on the first school unless you're in a position where you don't have that extra couple thousand and have no way of getting it. Might even be worth going into brief credit card debt and paying back high interest on a couple thousand with student loans when they're disbursed in August or July versus paying tens of thousands over time in extra COL.

Yes. Deposits are simply insurances to hold the seat until you have to finally chose one.
