I was wondering if, on the whole, getting into primary care is tougher than getting a categorical IM because of fewer number of PC track positions?
Any ideas on this matter?
Haven't applied yet but it's my impression that primary care tracks are smaller because there are fewer people interested in them. I read an article in the NY Times by someone at Yale who wrote that they had to cut the numbers in their PC track because of lack of quality applicants. At Pittsburgh they also rarely fill the PC track, whereas I assume the categorical positions fill.

this sounds about right, although I seem to remember hearing something about how Pitt's categorical track didn't fill either this year? And in spite of Yale's cuts, they still have quite a decent sized primary care program compared a lot of places. As a pretty average applicant, I plan on applying to both types of programs as I am very interested in primary care but like the idea of GI as well. And at one program, the PC track may suit me more than the categorical track, while vice versa at another program. We'll see how it turns out. Good luck!
