PCOM Class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am up for just meeting and having a bite to seat if that works. Never really been much of a drinker myself.

Hi everyone, I've decided to join the PCOM class of 2008 🙂 Its nice to meet you all!

Looking forward to next and wanted to ask if anyone is looking for a roomate, I'm frantically trying to secure a place. Any suggestions for places that are within walking distance to campus? Please feel free to PM me...

Again, hello to everyone!

Mete.

I will try to work on a date/time that is good for people. If anyone is intersted in attending a gathering in the next few weeks please let me know.

Hi! I'm also a part of the PCOM class of 2008! I am really excited to get there and to meet everyone. I am 22 years old and graduating this May, anyone else? It is exciting to become a part of such a diverse class..can't wait to start! Is anyone else attending the June 18 financial aid and Taste of Philly seminar????

Awww, I wish I could join you all, but alas, I am in Chicago till the end of June! If anyone wants to meet in July sometime, I'll be up for it! (plus, I'm moving to Manayunk, so the brewery sounds like a good (if not selfish on my part) option!)

((ps-- anyone moving to the Lofts at Chimney Hill???)

BklynWill you should consider going to the game, from what I understand from some of the first and second years, you will pick up more during the game than you do during the entire day session. That being said I will be there for both. Looking forward to meeting everyone. I am going to be down by school Wed evening if anyone is interested in getting together for a bite/drink at Manayunk Brew Co.

I wish I could join you Wed. but I have a meeting in West Chester until 2100.

Is anyone interested in getting together on May 26th? It is a Wednsday, and with some planning I am sure we can get a room if there is enought intertest.

i'll be at the financial aid seminar, but what's the Taste of Philly? and where did everyone hear about the Phillies and Royals game? i only got a postcard about the financial aid seminar, nothing else.

They sent the postcard about the seminar then I got a letter last week with a piece of paper included that said that PCOM has a group going to the game after the seminar and that you can pick up your tix for $10 at the seminar. Taste of Philly is the backdrop for the Fin Aid seminar, I am assuming that it will involve food. Maybe they are getting Gino's to cater 😀

hhhhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....geno's!

who's a vegetarian?? 😱

(kidding, I don't partake in the eating of meat myself, don't have problems with people who do; I just don't like meat...)

I'm a vegetarian! Erin, are you one too?! Jeez, the similarities, I'm connectingn with my future classmates so quickly 😀 Actually, my entire family is veg (my bro works for PETA). Anyone else?

I have to amend that statement-- I eat fish, so I'm actually not straight vegetarian, but I don't eat meat in the traditional sense of that word (my husband doesn't even eat fish). If I could, I'd eat Indian food for the rest of my life (south). YUMMMMMMYYYYYY.

My mom and grandfather are fish eating vegetarians as well (actually my grandfather *had* to eat meat only when he was 64 years old, over in Nepal, climbing Mt Everest, and he was sick, so he was forced to eat it, but that's a whole 'nuther story...)

I am so happy to have this ongoing chat with my fellow classmates-- keep it going!

Omnivor here, preferd well spiced meat dishes.

Vegitarians are good people though, they leave more for me.... 🙂

I hear ya..I eat everything but ham..guess I am in the minority here 😉

Current roommate is a vegan and we share a lot of meals....I just get a craving every now and then for meat but as a whole I mostly eat tofu and veggies. I was amazed at how many of the current PCOM students are vegetarian, don't know if it is the philosopy or just an abberation but the cafeteria selection is really good no matter what you eat.

After getting sick from eating sausage, I try to stear clear of it at all costs. The smell makes me nauseous to this day. Other than that eveything is fair game except for some veggies (atypical ones). Oh I almost forgot, I don't do crustaceans, to closely related to insects. I would not stand a chance on fear factor. I get sick just watching it on TV. May sound like I have a weak stomach, not the case, but we'll find out in about 3 months won't we.

Well, like I said, I'm an icthy-vegeterian (sp?), and I LOVE crustaceans 😍 , even thought I agree with Raptor5 that they seem like insects. Fear Factor's so gross-- I'm not sure why it's called "Fear" Factor; it's more like "Gross" Factor. I think lots of pre-pubescent boys like to watch it...

I actually stopped eating meat because I had a dream about eating meat (no lie!) about 8 years ago, and I felt really sick, and haven't touched the stuff since.
(my mouth waters when I smell that buffalo wing sauce, though-- they haven't perfected the buffalo-tofu taste yet, alas...)

Have you tried the Whole Foods buffalo tofu...not exactly like the real thing but pretty darn close

Mmmm...its damn good. All the gluten and soy you could dream of 😀 Pick up a pack of Gardenburger's veggie ribs if you want a real meaty, BBQ taste without the cruelty. I sound like such a spokesperson...

Its amazing how far mock meat has come in the past 4 or 5 years...there's a real good market out there for veggie peeps.

Total props for Riblets. We served them at our New Years party and people were complementing us on how did we get them to turn out that good without using our grill. We didn't tell anyone until after the party what they actually were....the reactions were classic, especially from the previously vigorous vocal carnivores

hee hee hee

(evil vegetarians taking over!) :meanie:

Looks that way, just be nice to your subjugated omnivores....

Sorry to deviate from the meat/no meat thread, and I don't meant to be a downer, but...
On a totally unrelated note, two questions for y'all:

Has anyone heard anything from financial aid? I got their packet, sent it back in (and filled out the fafsa, etc), got a confirmation from EAS (I think that's who I got it from) saying the received my application, and I'm now just waiting! I'm not sure if I should fill out the alternative loan form yet as I'm not sure how much aid I'll actually be getting, and the alternative loan has to make up the difference for me. I got an email a while back saying that my estimated contribution was like 16k, but there is no way I can pay 16k in tuition-- I have a job this year, but certainly won't next year! Does anyone know if this'll be a problem, or is financial aid smart enough to see that a med student cannot possibly pay 16k for tuition??

thanks!

here here on the ribs!

erin, i'm in the same boat. that AES postcard and email saying i'll be hearing something about how much i'm getting after PCOM confirms, etc. not sure how it works but i'm waiting/wondering too. not sure about the contribution, i guess we'll see when we get the letter saying how much we'll receive. what alternative loan form do you have and where do they come from? are they from your bank? this whole financial aid thing is a headache. are there no meat-eaters left out there??????????? sounds like i'll be in the minority at pcom, at least i know the cafeteria won't run out of cheeseburgers!

Thanks Billy33 and others,

I received a reply from jphazleton about this issue a while back, and I'd like to share it with you all now (has info about the alternative loan I'm probably going to apply for as well):

First of all, welcome to PCOM.

Secondly, don't worry about money. Worry about classes.

You can borrown $38,500 a year in Stafford Loans. $30,000 unsibsidized and $8,500 subsidized. Your 3rd and 4th years you can borrow up to $45,127.

There are also Perkins loans to students who qualify.

Private loans are a huge source of funding for most students as well. Personally, I recommend THE. They can be found at www.northstar.org

Great people, great rates, and PCOM is really familiar with them. I like them because they dont take origination fees like Sallie Mae does.

Any Q's, please let me know.

Erin: got your email. Congrats on finding a place! Let me know if you need any help with something.

Josh

Hope that helps with the alternative loan question. If anyone finds out anything , please let the rest of us know-- thanks!

I never received a postcard from AES, guess I should call FinAid to see if they even received the packet I sent back to them. I would not worry about getting enough money. My wife starts Pharmacy school this fall and just received her financial aid packet. She had a EFC of 16K and mine was like 14K and we had ~100k in income last year. She received 36K in aid so I doubt any of us will have problems finding the funds to pay for this endeavor.

I beleive PCOM figures around 55K to pay for all costs over the course of the year, so if your EFC is lets say 15K, just deduct 15K from the 55K to yield an amount of 40K that you can borrow. The EFC will reduce the subsidized loan amount slightly but not too much. I read this in a post awhile back.

Does anyone else in the class ride motorcycles? If so, would you like to go for a ride?

How many of you are married/engaged? I know that my wife is interested in meeting other spouses.

To bring up an older part of the thread, how many people are interested in getting together before class? I am happy to set something up, I just want people to be there.

I'm gonna be in Philly on Friday and Saturday (14th & 15th of May) looking at apartments. I'm totally down to get together, have a drink, get to know some of yinz. HNS, is this an OK date for you? Anyone else?

Hey guys and gals,

I'm driving out there June 8th... well, I'm driving from San Diego so I should be there by Saturday June 13th unless I spend an extra day in Vegas.
I know it's over a month away, but I'm planning my last month at home and I'd love to meet fellow PCOMer's.
I'll be in the Summer Start program and I'm just excited to be doing something cerebral this summer, in addition to partying my brains out :hardy:
Hope to meet everyone soon,

-S. Diego

Hey HNS,

I personally don't own a motorcycle, always wanted to ride one, though, so I may take you up on it come this summer! Is this how you are going to get to school? I have to figure out getting to school from manayunk...

And, yes, I'm married, as I suspect a few of the pcom2008ers are as well. I'm 28, husband (name Bo) is 31. He just finished his phd in cancer bio at the university of Chicago, and will be doing a post-doc at Penn.

How bout the rest of you fine people? Where did you go to undergrad? Have any interesting life experience (ok, I totally sound like the interviewers, and this is a completely open-ended question, but I'm curious). I did English as an undergrad at Rutgers, got an MA in it, then woke up and said "I need to go to med school." So, here I am. (not that interesting-- sorry...) 😴

-Hey turk--
are you going to see chimney hill?? pm me if you have ?? or want to chat about it!

Erin,
Motorcycle rides are always avaialbe. As you can see I am in West Chester and have no firm plans for how I am going to be getting to class. My hope is to take the bike as much as possible, well, except for the winter, snow/ice type stuff. My real hope is to get a room or share an apartment with someone around PCOM for the week and go home and cuddle with my wife on the weekends. At least that is the hope. Rebecca works for QVC in marketing, not the scientist, sometimes that is best so we do not feed off one another's frustration.

As for organizing some get together I am thinking middle of the last week in May or end of the first week in June. I am being selfish as those are the next times I am not working. How do those sound to everyone else?

Erin, I'm definately gonna check out Chimney Hill...but damn, they're expensive. I talked with the woman in charge there...the actual rent isn't too bad, but w/no utilities included, I dunno. Plus, I'd have to get a roomie...and it might be hard to market a place that is so pricey to poor grad students. But I'm definately going to see it anyways. Are you already in Philly? We should get together 🙂

Jeez, my g/f just called...she wrecked a rental car in downtown Miami...and she only has a learners permit. Oy vey...gotta go...

HNS and surrender, lets get together next weekend then. Raptor, you're in the area too right? Interested?

heya turk-
(jeez, hope your girlfriend's ok!)
I know, they are kinda expensive, but we actually couldn't find many more places for cheaper in philly-- since we had to look for places basically online, most places were at least 1000/mo for a one bd, no utilities (or, we would get electric, but nothing else). At Chimney Hill, the parking's included, which is really big for manayunk (no parking to speak of, and those hills are crazy!). The one crazy thing about philly as compared to Chicago is that many apts have this "pet fee" which isn't just a one time deal; we actually have to pay *rent* for our cats! Crazy! It's like an extra 50$ a month or something! I've never heard of such madness.
I'd love to get together, but alas, I'm in Chicago right now, still working, trying to make as much money as I can before starting, so I'll be here till the end of June. Does anyone want to meet in early July?

Have fun you guys!

-Erin

The 15th is great for me but, it has to be durring the day as I work overnight Friday/Saturday/Sunday. I am up for anywhere you guys/girls want to meet up. As there has been a fair amount of discussion about the Manayunk Brewary it might be nice to go there. Lunch sound good?

On another note, I am slowly looking for a roomate. If anyone is intersted in sharing an apratment let me know. I have seen apartments for prices of $550 on up for efficiencies. I am fairly clean and the such. Not to many offensive habits I know of. The plan is that I want to go home to spend the weekends with the wife. Post or PM me if anyone is intersted. Thanks.

So are we going to try to meet for lunch at Manayunk Brew Pub on Sat? I have a wedding that evening so I have the same problem as HNS. Anyone else on board?

How about the Brew House at noon? We can at least get a bite to eat and say "Hi"

That sounds perfecto. My pops is going to be coming up with me to help hunt down a good apartment this weekend...so I hope nobody objects to him coming to lunch too 🙂 He's good with young folk anyways, he's a professor...

Count me in.

Be careful, we might have to be on our best behavior.... 😎
