I have done my pgy1 ages ago and have been working as a hospital pharmacist for the last 10 years. I am preparing for my pgy2 residency interviews. I have got a few invites from ambulatory care and geriatrics. I have been asked to prepare for a patient case assessment and a 1 hr presentation on an topic in both Ambulatory Care and Geriatrics. Any general interview tips, case assessments, presentations, any topic ideas, how to prepare for the interview. It has been 10 yrs since I have attended an interview and need your help. Thanks to every one here. I follow this forum regularly but have never posted.

Does your hospital have any current residents? Maybe there's a CE you can watch of someone presenting a patient case? I feel like that would be your best resource.

I would also just do a plain google search for patient case presentation to help, usually there are guides etc from schools.

I will do the google search. My current residents are not helpful. Any online guides that I can look at? Thank you

That was helpful. Thank you. Any thoughts on how indepth the topic presentations need to be for pgy2 to cover for 45 mins to an hr? I want to get a basic idea. Thanks again

A breakdown of every presentation:

1) Learning objectives
2) Background
3) Epidemiology/Patho (if it fits your topic)
4) Any current guidelines?
5) Current studies that support whatever your talking about
6) Applicability to pharmacist or whatever institution you are at...

45 mins for presentation 15 mins for Q/A

That's the usual outline

Info coming from a current PGY1 that just did a PGY2 interview...

Hopefully that helps! Gluck!

P.S - In terms of patient assessment... Its really not too bad... Really focuses on your main chronic disease states... i.e diabetes... blood pressure... hyperlipidemia... and even possible some easy ID stuff like pneumonia or UTIs...

Be familiar with the drugs and guidelines and you should be fine w/ the patient case assessment... you probably have to talk about it with the interviewers or write a SOAP note... so be comfortable with both.

Thank you so much. Are you applying for pgy2 ambulatory or critical care? Can I pm you with any other questions I have?

what are the common patient cases I should prepare for an amb care pgy2 interview? Thanks

Do you have any patient cases you've evaluated at work? I would think since you've worked so much in the hospital, you can probably get a good grasp of an ideal ambulatory patient---probably a patient that is overweight with DM, htn, hyperlipidemia--- who presents with a macrovasulcar or microvascular complication like~ worsening of kidney function or even a MI? Just throwing ideas---

By the way! When you do your presentation, throw in a short quiz at the start and end of your presentation, possibly 5 questions that test your viewers about your topic! It'll definitely throw them a kick and show that you want them to learn from your presentation.

Good luck!
