I have a pharmacy technician job that starts in september( but it's not guarantee); I might be replacing someone that is leaving for school. Do anyone think I should wait to start the job before I submiting my pharmcas application.

Daniel Dennett blows those other scrubs away!

Dawkins is so... "LOOK AT ME I AM AN ATHIEST AND YOU SUCKS". Haven't read much Harris or Sagan, but Dawkins just rubs me the wrong way.

If you've read the other guys, make sure you pick up Dennett's Breaking the Spell, so good!

sort of side topic:

i've been told before that the grades you earn for your masters are not combined into your overall gpa, and is individually calculated. moreover, not the master degree just the grades from the masters degree, doesn't affect the gpa factor of your application that much.
how much truth is in that?

We're actually discussing that right now on this thread:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=644414

General synopsis is that the master's degree itself as an entity is useful for you to enhance your application and use on your PS if appropriate, etc. But, the grades will be factored into PharmCAS, and while undergraduate/graduate is broken down on the score matrices (you'll know what I mean when you see it), the PharmCAS cum/science GPAs are the ones that everyone's going to look at, and that'll include ALL of your post-secondary education.

Most of the schools that I am applying to have deadlines after the fall 09 semester except for a couple. Obviously I am going to have to e-submit in order to meet the november deadlines of certain schools, but can I still send in my transcripts from my fall 09 classes even after I have submitted my PharmCAS application?

or

should I just submit my application as it is.

Read the pharmcas instructions regarding the Academic Update.

Thanks, I thought I read the PharmCAS instructions inside and out. Obviously not though.

Hey Guys,

So, I just got my GPA calculated through PharmCAS and its super low. Yet, my prerequist gpa is much higher. How does this PharmCAS gpa work as opposed to actual GPA off of my transcripts?
🙁
Thanks for any help!

I have a similar position too, my community college gpa was 3.4 and my university g.p.a is 3.0 but with pharmcas they will calculate all the course work I took in both colleges which would include my fall freshman semester from the university (which i did poorly and had an academic forgiveness), so my over all gpa would end up being 2.8 and prereq would end up being 3.0. should i apply or should I go for my master in public health instead and if i do apply, do guys know of any school that would accept me; i am willing to travel any where in the U.S

Ya, I know what you mean about Dawkins, but his website is one of the best internet resources for science. His videos are great, and actually, the latest conversation with him and Dennett is amazing. Dennett is at his best, post-aortic aneurysm.

Hello all,

I just like your opinions on my situation. Long story short, I had a tough semester back in fall of 2006. I ended up getting all Fs for the semester (14 credits) because I didnt withdraw from the classes in time.

I will be applying to pharmacy school next fall. MY GPA now is 3.7 m/s and 3.5 overall, without those 14 credits (Fs) included. I was wondering if I'm applying to non PHARMCAS schools and I dont send the transcript from that school, what are the chances they'd find out. I know thats not the right thing to do, and most likely wont do this, out of fear that it will come back to bite me. I just want to hear your opinions.

:smack:

Don't hide grades. Don't think about hiding grades. It's stupid and the consequences are severe.

I don't see how lying to a PharmCas school is any different than lying to a non PharmCas school. I think the chances of them finding out is the same. You still have an unrecorded semester in your transcript. How do you explain that?

Even if the chance was a mere 1%, why would you put your future career in jeopardy? People ask this all the time on here and the response is always the same: don't lie, the consequences are grave, and if you do decide to try and hide those grades, then we're all hoping you get slammed for it.

I know, I know🙄.....To touch on the unrecorded semester, it just looks like I did a few classes at my previous school and then transfered and did my remaining credits at the other school. In other words I wasnt going to school fulltime consistently and then I have a semester that skips. I was kind of taking classes here and there up until 2008 and once i decided on pharmacy I started knocking out the pre-reqs.

But I guess that's niether here nor there. I gonna submit the grades because I'd be worried the whole time that I'd be found out anyhow!

Do you have just one semester at this school? If you have other grades at this school, they are going to find out when you send out those transcripts anyway or were you planning on not mentioning that school at all?

You should just disclose it. Explain what happened somewhere in your application and it will probably be okay. Clearly this one semester was a fluke because the rest of your grades are just fine. You wouldn't want to risk being thrown out of pharmacy for life when you probably can get in anyway if you are honest about it.

You're right. I'm just thinking of just mentioning it in my personal statements or as an addendum to my supplemental apps. To answer your question, yes this is the only semester I had at this school. My grades before and after that have been mostly As but nothing less than Bs.

What? I don't see how these are related in any way. Unless you are thinking of starting the job first so you can put it on your pharmCAS under job experience. But it's not going to benefit you all that much to state that you've worked at a particular location for a week.

The real question is why have you not already submitted your pharmCAS?

I got awarded a grant for undergrad research. Would that qualify under the honors section? I wasn't paid, it was just for supplies for research.

Thanks!
I'm not sure the name exactly, but it is something like ASI Student Funding. It is within my school

getting grants is huge! definitely highlight that throughout your app
Thanks!

Added!
Now I have another question:
I've worked in a pharmacy the past 18 months. Should I include jobs previous to that? I worked on a loading dock(Roadway Exp) for like 3 months, a little fast food place for about 6 months until they closed, and parking lot security at school(lol) for about 8 months. Is only my pharm tech job relevant?

How far back should I include? Probably just college jobs, right? Not jobs in highschool?

I didn't go back to high school -

I listed the Army, then the auto parts store where I worked while I went through most of my undergrad.

High school employment seems superfluous to me.

So i finished everything with my pharmcas except my letters of rec are taking their sweet time. I want to just submit since the school I want to get in is Western and I already did their letter of rec form. I'm trapped between wanting to submit pharmcas for all schools and wanting to submit my application early. I've got a 3.3 gpa with bs in biology, 1 year pharmacy hospital volunteering, ptcb certification, california pharmacy technician licensure, gonna look for work and do an Associate degree in pharmacy technology program at the same time, should I just go for it and just submit to Western? What are my odds?

You're fine. I sent in my PharmCAS apps in Aug 8 last year and Western's supplemental probably 3-4 weeks later. My stats were very similar to yours, except my volunteering was LA's skid row at a health clinic and an internship at a pharmaceutical company (Amylin). Slightly higher GPA (3.4). I got a call for an interview around November 14 for a December 6 interview. Really, my logic was "beat the early acceptance deadlines." I did that and at my Oregon State interview, one of the first things they mentioned was that they were rewarding us for our rapid submission of applications.

I digress though. Being similar to my qualifications and my interview invitation I'd say you're qualified. Be warned though that the Western interview can be a bit intimidating since there are close to 100 people there the day of. Be sure you know what they mean by a "humanistic approach." Research the pro's and con's of a block schedule system. (IE: 3 weeks to finish gross anatomy. Then move on to say, fundamentals of drug actions and finish that in another 3 weeks). Very different from what you may be used to.

Q: When registering for the PCAT and selecting schools to send score report to,
it says: "When you select a score recipient school that is a member of PharmCAS, the scores will be sent electronically to PharmCAS. These scores may or may not also be sent on paper transcripts, depending on the indicated preferences of the recipient schools, at no additional charge to you." Does that mean I need to select only ONE PharmCAS school and my report will be sent to PharmCAS? I want to choose 5 schools - all PharmCAS participants - but do I need to select 5 from the list, or just one ?

What is this humanistic approach? Is it on the app or something?

If they are all PharmCAS schools, then just select PharmCAS, not any of the schools. All they are saying there is that if you accidentally select a PharmCAS-participating school instead of PharmCAS, they will automatically forward it to PharmCAS (it is a common mistake). 👍

iamjess, uic supplemental will be out late august or early september (according to my knowledge); i emailed their office of student affairs.

Just a few questions:

when pharmcas states: Please list each extracurricular, leadership, volunteer, and/or community activities in order of importance to you (limit 10). so 1 is most important correct?

Yes, in order of importance would indicate most important being first.

When have you all found that the PCAT scores get to PharmCAS? I submitted my request for PCAT transcripts on June 3. They are still not in! I called Pearson the other day and they said they sent it on June 8, so it was PharmCAS's fault. I called PharmCAS and THEY said that they had just received the first batch of transcripts on July 13! Someone is lying to me....

So...have any of you had your PCAT scores already onto PharmCAS?

I called PharmCAS about this too. They told me they would not be posting the PCAT until after July 13, but they didn't mention anything about when transcripts were actually received from Pearson. Hopefully they will hurry up!

Yup, you're right. One of them is purposefully lying to you. God that must suck. Clearly the system if out to f***the applicant. AHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Pharmcas is slow. They will have it up in due time.

As long as no one else has theirs up, it doesn't really matter, right? I just don't want to be behind!

Also: I hear that PharmCAS "verifies" your application. What does that mean? How long does it take? I couldn't find a thing about it in the FAQs..

Effectively: they verify that you can follow directions and that you aren't a *****. When I applied it took around 5 hours, but those that submitted late in the cycle were dealing with weeks upon weeks (IE: GPA). Just follow directions and submit early and you should be golden.

Thanks, calicosa...

One more quick question: I have submitted my application. My GPA is calculated. I am just waiting on my PCAT scores and one more LOR to come through. After my LOR comes in, will my app be sent out right away? Or do they only send them out once a month, or what?

Last year I was told by pharmCAS that they don't wait for your eLORs to arrive to send out your application. They will send your application to your selected schools as soon as everything else is completed and they forward the eLORs to the schools as they come in. They send the applications out in "batches" so once everything is completed it goes into a que until the next batch is sent. Hope that helps.

I didn't take the PCAT so I'm not familiar with that particular department.

I have spoken to an official of the pharmcas several times before. She told me that Pearson sends it electronically to pharmcas. It just takes seconds for pharmcas to get the scores. However, the scores are sent on specified dates. So you have to wait till July 13th. Also, they have to match the scores with your SSN.

Hey guys I wouldn't worry about it. There are a lot of things to stress out about during the application process, but this isn't one of them because you are ahead of the game by filing in June/July. The applications won't be reviewed, generally speaking, until the fall, so allow them some time to post your PCAT scores.

hey,
I can't go to the PharmCAS login page. Does it happen to you as well?

Hey guys,

I just joined this forum and it looks pretty helpful. Anyways I was filling out the questions and came across the question and paused:

Were you ever the recipient of any action (e.g. dismissal, disqualification, suspension, probation etc.) by any college or university for unacceptable academic performance or conduct violations?

When I was in school, I was stupid and had no idea what I was doing. I was after this one beauty queen who was supposedly seeing another guy. I was so afraid to ask her in person, so I made a fake email and tried to achieve my answer. Unfortunately, they found out who the person was and they went to the campus police. The police talked to me and later the judicial process found me guilty for being dishonest (student code of conduct violation).

Later, while I was at university my case was expunged.

But unfortunately another thing started. I was having dispute with a professor on a grade for taking off some points resulting a grade reduction. He believed that we copied the lab results form someone else's work. We were not satisfied with his decision and took the case to the dean where we decided that that case be resolved by honors board. After learning that it was too risky to go thru that route we decided to leave it as is. But the prof informed the honors board in writing that we cheated. This became our permenant record which cannot be expunged. We got a warning letter that if we were to be in a 2nd violation, we would be referred to the board and HV will be placed on the transcript.

My concern is that do both incidents have to be reported? If I do not, would this be an issue later on when I get my Pharmacy license?

I have a question.
I am currently enrolled in a Summer course, to be completed at the end of July. I added that information to the course information section of PharmCAS and I will send my completed transcript once I have completed the class.

Now, I have already registered for my fall classes for my bio BS. I called my university and asked them if I sent my transcripts now, would it show I am enrolled in those classes. They informed me that until classes start in the fall, my transcripts will be blank.
Thing is, I wanted to e-submit my PharmCAS early, but now it looks like I have to wait until my fall classes start at the end of August! 🙁 I definitely want these fall classes to be seen on my application before the PharmCAS update, so does that mean I really have to wait before I e-submit, or can I just e-submit showing that I am enrolled in the classes for Fall 2009 but haven't started them yet, without the transcript.

Aaahh, that sounds so confusing, sorry if I lost anyone! please help!!

Incident 1 - Expunged and gone forever.

Incident 2 - A little trickier. There's a huge, huge thread on a cheating dilemma that you should probably read if you haven't, it's on the first page by Andrew87, I recommend it. It is my contention that you have no choice but to admit the problem, because even if you DIDNT cheat, if it's official that you did, it'd behoove you to report it.

It shouldn't cause you an issue in obtaining your Pharmacy license per se, but it might make getting into Pharmacy school a little more difficult. If you withhold the "cheating", and it's discovered later, you're borked.

Hi everyone,

I sent in my transcript to PharmCAS right after my spring 09 grades were all in. This was in early June. However, now my summer class is over and I have also gotten a grade for it. In addition, I have not yet submit my PharmCAS application.

So, my question is should I sent in another transcript that includes my summer grade? Will they know that this is an updated trancript?

Thanks in advance for the help.

As long as you haven't e-submitted your application, you can send the updated transcript. I believe the PharmCAS sheet even has a box for new grades or updated transcript.
