I'm a first year at Pikevegas. If you need any advice feel free to ask. I from there so I know the area pretty well.

hossofadoc,

I appreciate that, very much so. I really liked Pikevegas. I do have one question. Is financial aid difficult to get? Oh, one other question, is there anything that I need to be doing or planning now? Thanks a lot.

everyone gets financial aid, if they want it. (i'm pretty positive, but someone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong) You can start filling out your FAFSA, but you still have a lot of time. there's nothing you need to be doing now. i dont' go to PCSOM, but its all basically the same

Aaron- Yeah, raspberry is right, everyone here gets fin. aid, if you want it. I would actually start filling the forms out and get them in because Mrs. Jones (fin. aid person) is going to be out for maternity leave starting sometime in May. The only planning I would do for med school is start looking for a place to live...other then that sleep alot (because you won't get a chance too once you start and hang out with friends/family/sig. other....ohhh, be sure to either go somewhere or party a lot before med school starts because you won't be able to while in school. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Aaron-Yeah, that would be my home....I call it the med school dorm because of the amount of med students that live here.

Hi Aaron, I'm also a MS 1 here at Pikeville - congrats on being accepted! I also looked at the Anthony to live at but I picked a bigger apartment over the Anthony. The real estate lady that showed me the other apartments was from Adams Construction. Although the rent is a little higher, I really like my place. Overall my advice is to find some where close to the school so you can walk home in between classes. If you need names and numbers for apartment hunting or anything else, feel free to PM me.

Dear PCSOMers,

I appreciate your willingness to help with questions. I came to Pikeville today to look around a get a feel where everything is located. I primarily wanted to look for housing. I tried out several places and wanted your opinion about these places. I will paste them below.

The Cedars Townhouse Apartments
531 Cedar Creek Rd
Pikeville, KY
(606) 433-1713

Pike Villas
130 Claire Ln
Pikeville, KY
(606) 432-3286

Kentucky Avenue Apartments
Sycamore Street
Housing Authority at Pikeville
748 Hambley Blvd
Pikeville, KY 41501
(606) 432-8124 or (606) 437-6679

Ridge Cliff Apartments
680 Hambley Blvd
Pikeville, KY 41501
(606) 432-8304

Hames Parks
College Street
Pikeville, KY 41501
(606) 432-8124

The Kentucky ave apts were on sycamore street right below where first year classes are held. What are your opinions of these places. I would imagine the top three are kinda steep in price. I like Pike Villas because it was right beside the YMCA.

Thanks for you help! I look forward to meeting you next year.

Are these the ones behind the hospital? Those are nice, but the road will wash out when it floods. Your house is ok, but you will be stuck for a few hours to a day.

Pike Villa is Rent Controlled, income qualified. Last I checked there was a waitlist. You are too far to walk to school, but very close to the YMCA.

This is a public housing apartment building. Very close to campus, but it smells and has rats. Because of the amount of uneducated, unemployed white people living in close proximity, this place has been reffered to by some as a "trash compactor." Once, when walking to school past this building, one of the residents asked me if I was "one of them college boys." You really dont want to live there.

Ah, the Cliff. Ask about rent controlled apartment without street view. Janet the landlord will tell you that if you dont put in a deposit tommorrow, you wont get a place... this is not exactly true. Kinda expensive for what you get but is a nice quiet place walking distance from campus. It is full of old people so it smells. The old people will either love or hate you. If you make a peep at night, your neighbors will complain.

Dunno....

unk_fxn,

Thanks for the response to this thread. I found out that I both Pike Villas and the Kentucky Apts were rent controlled and they told me that I would not be eligible to live there.

Would you know any other places that I can look into? I sent an application to Janet at RidgeCliff yesterday. I liked it there, but it was kinda steep.

Aaron,

I really like my apartment (through Adams Real estate) - I have a roommate which keeps in the rent down and it's walking distance to school. I got my roommate (also a MS1) by asking Angel if she knew of anybody that needed a place. Again, the anthony apartments are a nice option. Everybody else I know who is happy with their place lives further out of town. Good luck!

Cookie Monster,

Could you tell me exactly where the anthony is and the number to reach them? I saw a big builidng in Pikeville that said Adams Construction (before you get into town). Where is the apartment that you are living in? If you dont mind, could you give me a contact? I really appreciate your help.

Aaron,

I pm-ed you. I forgot to include that the Anthony apartments are in the middle of downtown pikeville (right across from the school) off main street.

I really appreciate all your help. I got your message Buster and Cookie. I am really excited about coming to school at Pikeville and cant wait to meet you all. I have talked Janet at Ridge Cliff. I would like to live around the school and around other students if possilbe.

You guys are really nice. Once again, I appreciate your help.

Current PCSOM Students,

I was looking at PCSOM website and reading about the Clinical ACR (research program). Are there a lot of research opportunities at PCSOM? Is there ample time to complete research? Thanks guys.
