  1. Pre-Optometry
I take the OAT this saturday and just need a couple pieces of advice for last minute studying. I feel I need to practice my physics and chem more, but am slowly losing confidence. Any words of wisdom?

One piece of advice for those who haven't taken the OAT yet...don't take it during the school year!

If you are scoring around 300 on the kaplan exams, then you will defintely be fine. The OAT physics is mostly about concepts... so really understand the different forces (gravitational, friction, etc). As for general chem, it seemed to be a bit of everything (concept, calculations, applications, formula), so it would be difficult to cram for it. just be confident and do as many problems (OAT destroyer or kaplan) and you should be fine. I was consistently getting 340's on the Kaplan exams and I got a 380 on the OAT. So, depending on what you are aiming for, dont' worry and try to learn concepts for physics and do as many problems for chem, and you should be fine!

HOW DO I STUDY FOR PHYSICS??? I HAVE NO UNDERSTANDING OF THAT SUBJECT. Also is the QR section hard or like practice kaplan exams????

I'm scheduled to take it on Nov 18th, and im not sure what/how much you've studied so far..I have already finished reading the big kapln book once and have an idea what i definitly need to know for the oat based on various sample tests i've looked at (opted, kaplan, destroyer)
here are some of the topics that are almost gaauranteed to show up in my opinion..

Bio:
basic embryology
endochronogy
nervous system
glycolysis/ photosynthesis
excretion/kidney stuff
basic genetics
phylums and exampls
basic circulatory system (path deoxygenated blood takes through the heart)

Gen chem:
oxidation/reduction (must know)
gas laws
rate law
basic pH calculation
the trend for properties such atomic radii, electronegativty, etc..
basic stoichimetry
Thermodynamic laws 1&2 (must know)--spontanity
hess's law

Physics:
if you're clueless in physics invest the remaining time in learning Kinematics and force (MUST KNOW)

Ochem:
Sn1-2/ E1-1
stereochemistry
halogenation (know which ones are faster/more selective etc..)
aromaticity
as far as other reactions i would be most concrned with carbonyl related reactions
know the stable chair conformation/ fisher projection
sorry for the many spelling errors

GL...wish me luck too 😛

Can you tell me what you think of kaplan RC vs. the actual test? I read on here that the opted is easier than the real test, but what about kaplan?
i've done two 1 hour long (3 passages, 20 min each)kaplan RC tests and i got 400 both times..should i count on these scores?
thanks

First off...Good luck on the 18th!! It sounds like you've done a great deal of studying to prepare yourself🙂 I have also read the big kaplan DAT book, but it doesn't include a physics compilation. I feel very confident in biology and RC, but am just nervous about the physics and chem portions because I haven't had those courses for a couple of years. I just purchased the OAT achiever the other night and I feel it has built my confidence a lot. I love that it is a computer based program, which I'm assuming will help prepare me for the actual exam.

To everyone that replied...thanks for the boost of confidence and the suggestions; they are much appreciated!

As far as the results from the OAT Achiever, I wouldn't be too concern if you happen to do worse on it, since the real OAT physics section will not require you to perform extensive calculations like the OAT Achiever rather it's more conceptual. Good luck with your exam.
