Bear with me. First time doing a poll.

I was in 8th grade and some guy asked me what I was going to be when I grew up. I said "anesthesiologist" because it was the longest word for a doctor I knew. :) Didn't think about the field much again until I actually got to medical school.

Funny how things work out. Maybe if I'd said "astronaut" they'd be getting ready to shoot me into space right now.

Walked through the hospital parking lot, saw an anesthesiologist getting into a ferrari, and that was all it took.

J/K.

I figured it out when I actually did a rotation.

No, he said, and I remember this vividly for some reason ... "Wow! Congratulations!" with this look of genuine respect and admiration. As if I was going to start work the next day, Doogie-Howser-like. Kinda weirded me out, actually.

kinda liked surgery at the beginning. Then the surgeon once made me retract w/ my finger as a MS3!!

Anesthesiologist, stepped in, basically told the surgeon off. Told him that students SHOULDNT be retracting w/ their fingers and should be doing it with a retractor.

I just thought the dude was sooo cool, no one ever 'crossed' this surgeon.

My first experience w/ anesthesiology was in high school. I volunteered at the community hospital that my dad worked at, and through the volunteer program I was allowed to sit in on a lady's cholecystectomy.

When I got into the OR, the anesthesiologist waved me over to the head of the table so I could watch him intubate her. When he wrenched back on the laryngoscope and let me see her vocal cords, I got so queasy I almost puked, and had to sit down so I wouldn't pass out. After I got over the initial shock of that, I was really interested in what he was doing, and wound up paying more attention to him than I did to the surgeon.

Haven't looked back since, and every other experience with anesthesia in the meantime has strengthened my resolve.

For me, it was that part in American Beauty. You know, where the two gay neighbors go to give a welcome-to-the-neighborhood giftbasket to the homophobic Nazi worshipping Dad.

"What is it exactly that you two fellas are 'partners' in?"

"Well - he's a tax attorney...and I'm an anesthesiologist."

Boo ya!

yeah, i agree. its all about being part of the group that pulls the most tail, given the fact they have so much money plus plenty of time for sex. don't hate the player, hate the game.

plus everything else pretty much sucks.

It was the only thing left I had to try that I would possibly like after surgery. Thank God I did my rotation in time. I have met a couple of gen surgers looking to switch over. One of them has.

This isn't to slam on my knife weilding bretheren. I'm just sayen I'm happier on my side of the IV poles.

I make good bank.

I go to work in pajamas.

I dont have a clinic.

I do cool s hit at work.

Women in labor think we are rock stars.

Anesthesia bought me an MTV Cribs house.

Yep.

Pretty good gig.

Oh and i forgot one thing.

I love the OR and loved being closer to the Anesthesia machine. The machine in addition to providing anesthesia for the patient, is a great source of heat in a VERY COLD room.
