i wrote that we had 10 rads(radiology) matches in the previous post. they are all pgy2 matches. it doesnt have its own category on our match list...one at cedars sinai, usc, ucsf, cleveland clinic, NMH(i dunno y they still call it mcgaw medical center), etc. etc. if u want to hunt for all of them look at the IM matches and the transitional matches.

i don't know how many applied to rads.

Hmm, I guess you're right. P&S has a history of being more surgical-subspecialty-oriented, but you'd think we'd have at least one FP. I think the closest we get is that some of the internal medicine matches were in "primary care" tracks - not sure which ones...

BI Deaconess and MGH don't have separate residency programs (BID, Boston Children's, MGH, and BWH all participate in the Harvard Combined Ortho Residency), so it's a little confusing that one placement is to Mass General and another to BID. Does this just mean that there were two matches to the Harvard ortho program?

Thanks!

kinda related in light of yale's crazy derm matches...

here's a link to a partial list of this year's derm matches across the usa i found on a popular derm message board.

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/longk/DermMatch2004.htm

man...schools like harvard and yale essentially matched only their own students w/ exception of harvard where a vandy student matched.

You're probably right. I don't know why our match list is written that way, but the MGH and BID matches are two different people.

so the record setters for this year:

yale: 12 derm
case: 8 optho

alhtough we don't have georgetown's matchlist yet, i'm sure that georgetown will has some crazy ortho matches like last year's list when i interviewed... 15+ orthopedics matches.

I'm uncomfortable making value judgements about one specialty over another, but am I the only one bothered by the # of students from the most elite medical schools (Yale, Harvard, Hopkins, Wash U) going into derm? It strikes me that there is something out of balance with the admission process screening @ those schools when you getting such large numbers of the class (and usually among the top students in those classes) opting for a field that so peripheral to the core curriculum.

mamie,

I notice that HMS had 3 OMS matches. I thought only dentists could go into OMS.

Yeah. To become an OMS, MD grads have to get a 6-year residency so they can pick up their DDS along the way (DDS grads have the option of 4-year OMS, or 6-year OMS+MD residencies). One thing I'm not sure about is if an MD would have to take part I of the dental boards, since DDS grads doing MD residencies have to pass Step I before starting the med school years.
